Article: TEX 7, MIN 4: Is Jose OK?
rdehring replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I understand that Vasquez had a long day in airports yesterday, arriving at the stadium shortly before game time. With his surprise call up and long day, I think the manager could have let him settle in and observe for a night before putting him out there. May have been better decision for all!- 23 replies

The Miracle are now tied for first with Charlotte, who won their doubleheader by a combined score of 19-0. Should they be tied after the next two games, the first tie breaker is head-to-head competition. I am not real certain when the first and second half split was, but it appears they hold that tie breaker...does anyone know for certain? Will second all the comments about Thorpe, whom I consider one of their two best pitching prospects...along with Graterol. Was great seeing Lewis with a couple hits. Jax hasn't been sharp the last couple games. Having pitched 87 innings after two years of almost no activity, expect he is running on fumes. I also am very excited about the season's Severino and De La Torre had at ETon. They are two more middle infield prospects we are going to have to watch over the coming years.

It appears that Giminez is not on the 40-man roster. With this move, they have opened up a spot on the 40-man roster. Is it possible they will be adding someone today or over the weekend? Another trade? Someone joining the Twins after the minor league season is over, someone who isn't on the current roster? Maybe a relief pitcher at Rochester?

The Miracle have 3 games remaining with a 1.5 game lead, giving them a magic number of 3. Charlotte has 4 games remaining, making it 6 games in four days. That could be rough for their pitching staff. The Miracle are on a 4 game winning streak and now control their own destiny. Win three more and they are in! If the Miracle make it the Twins will have three teams in the playoffs (Fort Myers, Cedar Rapids and Elizabethton). Considering the GCL Twins finished a game and a half out of first and the DSL Twins were a game out with a 50-22 record, things look very good from A ball down. That looks good for the Twins future. Unfortunately, that future may be two or three years away. But it sure looks like the FO plan of building organizational strength has been working. Too bad they don't have a magic wand that can give us more hope for next year!

Article: Hardball, the Twins, and Byron Buxton
rdehring replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Does Rosario's injury come into play? Maybe they should have him in a Twins uniform tomorrow? -
Scratching my head a bit about De Jong. Don't know what to expect from him in the future. Interesting that he is doing well at AAA and is only 24 years old. Nice break-out game at AAA for Zander Wiel. We talk a lot about Rooker, maybe we should include Wiel in some of those conversations. So the Miracle and Charlotte are now tied, with Charlotte having 6 games to play in four days. Will they get them in? All the Miracle can do is keep winning and whatever will be will be. Great seeing Rortvedt step up big, but he has been doing that all month as indicated by his .320 average in August. What was really interesting is that while Lewis rested, Miranda was at shortstop. What a great time of year for the Kernels bats to be hot, with the playoffs about to begin.

I am assuming that AK will be, well like AK. Was looking for another player to get hot, one who hits ahead of him and gets on base. Kind of like a month ago, or whenever, when Rosario and Escobar were driving opponents crazy.

Will second the above comment, thanks guys. Unfortunately, our daily fix of minor league information is about to end. Took a look at the Miracle road to the playoffs. Charlotte has a half game lead and plays an extra game later this week...a doubleheader against last place Florida. Fortunately, the Miracle also play two against a last place team, Bradenton. The Miracle finish by crossing over and playing three against first place Clearwater. Clearwater should have clinched by the then, so that could help. They could really use an ignitor this last weekend. Can Lewis suck it up and be that man? Also took a look at the road ahead for ETon in the playoffs. Both of the teams they could end up playing from the East Division in the finals, should they get there, are the only two teams in the league with over 40 wins. They also each have 3 of the leagues top 8 hitters, based on average...the Twins have none. Looks like the Twins will need a balanced attack from throughout the lineup and some real good pitching if they are to get another championship. And congrats to Buxton for another nice game at the plate and also to Kennys Vargas for his all-star selection. Expect it came as a surprise to lots of folks in the Twin Cities. Assume we will see Buxton back in a Twins uniform early next week. Another game without Luis Arraez in Chattanooga. Assume he was injured the other night.

Great seeing Romero have a very good game. If he can get 6.2 innings in his last start, he would hit 150.0 innings for the season. Should put him on track to be solid for the Twins in '19 with no innings concerns. Last night sure made me take notice of AK. And belated happy birthday to Graterol. Will he pitch for the Twins as a 20-year old? I will go out on a limb and say he won't make it until a week after his 21st birthday. Expect that Lewis has just plain run out of gas in his first 'full' season. May be a reason we won't see him in the AFL. I remember Tademo catching my eye two years ago when he had an excellent season in the DSL as a 17-year old. Great seeing him have a good year and moving up to A ball after a disappointing 2017. And CONGRATS to the Kernels!

But they also added a huge amount of talent. Larnach, Jeffers, Duran, Maciel, Davis and some kid named Helman. If their starting pitching holds up, could this be their year?

Fantastic seeing Buxton have a great game at the plate. Now if he can have a few more over the next week. And a very nice start by Thorpe, his best at AAA? You said Vasquez had 2 K's and 3 walks. The box score showed 4 K's and 0 BB's in 1.2 innings? If that's correct, this kid just gets more interesting as the year winds down. Any word on Arraez, was he injured? And just when Fort Myers needs a winning streak, they cool off. Still 7 games left and they are only 1.5 games out of first....Come on Miracle!

De La Trinidad had another good game, which has been the norm for him. Also good nights from Smeltzer and that Duran kid. It sure is exciting to think about what he could become. Lots of nice talent added last month. Hope Arraez continues hitting like he has this last month. Want to see him get his AA average up to .320 to match what he hit at Fort Myers. With zero drop off moving from Hi-A to AA, he seems destined for the Twins second base slot sometime next year. Took notice of Keirsey in your report. With everything else going on we tend to forget about him, but he is having a very nice rookie season.

Dirty shame that they lost on a night when Odorizzi pitched his best game of the year. And congrats to Mauer. Hopefully, he will sign on for two more years (or two one year contracts) so that he can have the most hits of any Minnesota Twin. Got to expect 2400-2500 hits would also give him a much better chance for the Hall.
-
I was curious about your comment about Kirilloff, "and only added to his strikeout total with two more." Although accurate, it would make the casual reader think he strikes out a lot. That was surprising to me, so I checked. With 35 K's at Fort Myers, his strikeout rate is about 15%, which is rather good for any hitter...at least in my opinion.

Article: We Are All Witnesses, Right?
rdehring replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
With the year he is having, I have to believe he will come back on a one year contract. See how things go next year, then decide again next November. Although I don't know how many, expect he needs more hits to be considered for the Hall. -
Article: Let's Talk About Logan Forsythe
rdehring replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
My first choice, and hope, for second base next year is Eduardo Escobar. Should he not be available, I have no problem with them signing Forsyth to a short contract...one year or one year with an option. In my opinion, there isn't anyone in the system who will be available to play second before mid-season, at the earliest. So they will need to get somebody.- 44 replies

Going to be interesting come November to see if the Twins put Jay on the 40-man roster. Certainly doubtful based on his performance. Would he be lost if they don't? Romero is now past his innings from last year. Looks like he is again running out of gas. Don't know what to think about Grz, sure is doing well in his first season of professional ball. And isn't it great seeing Rortvedt finish strong? They have the Miracle only a half game out of a playoff spot. With time running out, the Kernels have a 4.0 game lead to make the playoffs. This is an exciting roster and should be fun to follow their playoff run. Was Enlow's 8 K's the most of his career?

Article: Twins Minor League Report (8/21): Rooker Slam!
rdehring replied to Steve Lein's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Thought it may have been a tight strike zone for Thorpe, but that first batter got a ball call on a pitch that was darn near in the middle of the strike zone and another that could have been a strike. Then he got squeezed on three pitches to the next hitter. Hard to overcome those type of calls, but something he has to work on. Rooker's bat has been ice cold all month. Great seeing him have a big swat. Likewise, Rortvedt's average was a bit lower in July, but he has been hitting better this month. I continue to believe that he could be the catcher all Twins fans have been waiting for. I know you don't report on the DSL, but the Twins may be getting one of their best pitching performances from a 17-year old Venezuelan, Anthony Escobar. After pitching 2.0 innings of relief last night, he has 55.0 innings with 50/11 K/BB, a 0.98 ERA and 0.69 WHIP. He has made two relief appearances (1.0 and 2.0 innings) the last four days after not pitching for nearly a month. Does anyone know if he was injured? Or did he cross the 50 inning threshold and they shut him down to save innings for the playoffs?- 22 replies

Article: September Piggyback Ride
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Interesting, Seth. I would include Odorizzi to the list of guys that should go 4+ innings. Seems that is where he runs into trouble. Will be curious if we see some of this, although doubt we will see it to the extent you have laid out.- 38 replies

In Morrison's defense, sounds like the hip was a problem much of the year. But agree with the comments about Vargas. Wish him well in getting a nice contract with someone else over the winter, someone who will give him a real opportunity. Looks like Cedar Rapids is serious about getting into the playoffs with their lead now at 2 games. The infusion of talent from the trading deadline and draft sure has been a boost for them. Big games from Maciel, Jeffers, Larnach and Helman, who got an XBH for a second straight game. Nice debut for Quezada, real nice.

Its a shame Kirilloff won't have enough at bats to qualify for the batting crown in the FSL. He is about 75 points ahead of the current leader. We've seen Vargas' name in these write-ups a lot this month. Checked and he is over .300 average with 6 home runs in August. Good for him. Hopefully it will get him a contract with someone over the winter. Another great start by Jax, who just might move up the ladder real fast the next two years. And this Colina guy has been good all year, but really good since the break. Expect he is another guy that is going to get a lot of consideration when you do your rankings this fall. And Helman must have read the comment section yesterday and said, "hey, I can hit home runs too."

Nice games from Buxton and Grossman. Expect you are right and Grossman will be at Target Field today. Best to let Buxton have another ten days to feel real good and then bring him up on September 1. Arraez has not hit for an average under .309 in his career. After a slow couple weeks following his promotion, he has his average at AA over .300 (over .400 in August and today is the 19th). No reason to expect he will have anything other than a lot of multi-hit games the rest of the season. This also appears to answer any question about his going on the 40-man and his future with the Twins. Only question for me is when? This year's first and second picks are both doing well at Cedar Rapids, but the shining star appears to be Helman. Highly unlikely he can continue hitting .422, but what a pleasant surprise. Or is it? Great seeing Duran come back with another fantastic outing. Maybe someone at the Strib should forward the box score to Patrick Reusse.
