  1. What a fun day to watch baseball. A great 2-1 pitchers duel followed by the home team blowing out an opponent. OK, it was the White Sox. But it still was fun to watch. Hasn't it been interesting watching these four young starters, Stewart, Gonsalves, Littel, and De Jung, get valuable experience. I see those four together with Mejia, Slegers and Romero battling it out for the #5 spot in the rotation next spring. Or two spots should Pineda not be what they expect. That situation tells me I will be surprised if the Twins go out and get any starting pitching this winter, unless they complete a trade to upgrade another starter. They should also have Thorpe by late summer and Graterol sometime in 2020. Not a lot of work left for the starting rotation and that is good so they can focus on the bullpen.
  2. These last few games, Berrios has been reminding us what he can be. Don't know what caused the late summer bump? Maybe all the hype surrounding the all-star game. Or was it the stress from a couple complete games? I really believe he can take that last step to become a legitimate ACE, one of the best half dozen starters in the game. Now will he do it next year or will we have to wait longer?
  3. If this is it, thank you Joe. And thanks Ted for a well written summary of a wonderful career. Will always remember that Saturday morning so long ago when Cretin was playing Minnetonka in St. Paul. Spent it with a good friend and Terry Ryan, watching the game and talking baseball. Can still see the line drive he put on the street beyond center field.
  4. Thanks, Seth. Sounds like the Twins may have found a diamond in the rough. And his first year of development went about as good as anyone could have hoped for. Well, almost as it would have been better had he played another four or five games in September. Curious if he got to know Larnach while in Omaha?
  5. I want to see Odorizzi used as part of a big trade to get that top young starter, Doc. Include he along with one of the four young starters currently getting experience. Toss in a good upper level prospect and get someone that can be a big part of the staff for many years.
  6. Good to see Stewart get thru a game with no walks. Was watching on a second tv while catching the opening episodes of all the NCIS programs, saw he was close to walks a few times but didn't put them on. And even though this is another game against Detroit, he should be putting himself into position to battle for that #5 spot in spring. Wouldn't be surprised if he begins the season at Rochester. Or maybe he has impressed enough to be part of a package for a very good young starter who battles for the #2 spot in the rotation.
  7. Many years ago my son and I were at Twins spring training. Went to two games. We saw Kirby Puckett play during the first game. The next day he was in the lineup, then shortly before the game he was scratched. Little did anyone know that one of the greatest and most likeable Twins of all time would never again step on the field. Is Sunday Joe's last game?
  8. Count me among those who want to see Joe back for another year. Hopefully, if he does decide this is it, he lets management know by the end of the World Series so they can plan accordingly for 2019. Whatever happens, I will be joining Seth and others watching this week of baseball and Joe. Hopefully, the Twins close it out with a couple series wins!
  9. Your post, Nick, raises many questions. The above comment from mlhouse points out how really ugly the recent past draft decisions have been. I have been as down on Stewart as anyone the past few years. After an ugly first couple games, he is showing some promise that he could develop into a solid middle of the rotation starter (#3-#4). Spring will determine where he starts 2019. It will likely be back at Rochester, but that's ok. I am fearful that Tyler Jay will be out of the organization come December. The Twins most likely won't add him to the 40-man and some team may take a flyer on him. Although he has shown little to encourage us, watch him become a shut down late inning reliever for someone else a few years down the road...or not. Is it possible the Twins Daily staff could have reviewed public scouting information and drafted better than the Twins from 2011 thru 2015?
  10. No question in my mind that Gibson should be one of three players extended this winter. He, along with Rosario and Berrios, can be the core of the team for the next 4+ years. I also like what they are doing with Petit. AAA clubs have become a combination of prospects and prospects who have become AAAA type players. AAA teams also need other team's minor league free agents to both build depth and to put the best product on the field for the minor league fans. Guys like Petit are good examples of this third group. I don't know what he makes while at Rochester, but adding him to the 40-man and calling him up for September gives him nearly another $100k. As long as 40-man spots can be created, great way to make him happy to resign with the club for next year after being waived off the 40-man in October.
  11. The above comments got me thinking about the middle infield. Do they need to get a second baseman? Maybe the best move is to move Polanco to second and pencil Adrianza in as the shortstop. Although we haven't seen him there a lot, he is supposed to be a defensive first shortstop. And he has hit better than expected. That would mean they could go out and sign a utility guy who plays good defense at both spots. Although none of us knows if Gordon will make it, they would have Gordon and Arraez knocking on the door from AAA. Then they have Lewis, who could arrive as soon as next September, penciled in as the starting shortstop beginning in 2020.
  12. I am finding that I enjoy this series of articles very much, Seth. Thanks. This one also made me think about Cedar Rapids, the community. It really is a great place. Although I will always be a Badger State guy, what an upgrade for the organization when they moved from Beloit to Cedar Rapids. And Banuelos winning this award really reminds us how small this world is. Those ties are amazing.
  13. Point on, Nick, thanks. One move you didn't mention is extending Kyle Gibson. I would put that right up there with Berrios as 3b. Don't know what to think about Buxton. And something no one has mentioned, when he was approached for an extension last winter he turned it down. So his lack of performance and time of service would be a non issue had he negotiated last year. But the bigger question is whether he will ever be more than a defensive/speed guy? Sano is another question. To be honest, I don't know how the Twins prepare for next year with both of these guys. They are likely untradeable and must be penciled into any starting lineup. Unfortunately, both could be all-stars or busts in 2019. Can we at least hope for one of each? And as I stated in another article this morning, I have a feeling we are going to see a fairly major trade for a starting pitcher over the winter.
  14. Good presentation of where the starting staff is at, Ted, thanks. I have thought for some time that the FO doesn't need to do anything to the starting staff this winter. But, will they? Certainly don't need to go out and get any retread starter or another Lance Lynn. Could see them roll the dice on a AAAA guy, hoping to catch another Kluber. Also could see them upgrading Odorizzi with a trade including him, one of the seven potential young starters not named Romero, and another lower level prospect...perhaps one of the players obtained in July. Maybe the biggest news we could hear this winter is signing Gibson and Berrios to extensions...get this done. But as pointed out above, to improve in 2019 the bullpen has to get better. And all indications are the guys we all have wanted to see from Rochester aren't the answer, at least for 2019.
  15. My first take on yesterday's game is to remember that we were playing the Tigers. They are not a good team, plus they were without Niko Goodrum. I like the energy Willians Astudillo brings to the game. Not only is he a decent hitter, he can play several positions while also being a capable catcher. The Twins need to find a way to have 13 position players next year with Astudillo a leading candidate for #13. If not, he certainly should remain on the 40-man roster and be in Rochester to fill in when/if one of their catchers is injured. He does have options available, doesn't he? Also liked Gonsalves performance yesterday. This September has been an excellent opportunity for him, Stewart, DeJong and Littell, to get their feet wet. This month should give the Twins FO enough information to assist in their planning for 2019. Is it realistic to expect that they can find a #5 starter from this group, including Romero, Mejia and Slegers? Has one performed well enough that they may interest another team so they can be a part of a bigger off-season trade? With Thorpe and Graterol also on the horizon, maybe the Twins put together a package to bring in a young quality starter who can improve the #3 spot in their rotation next year and beyond. [i am not suggesting they trade Thorpe or Graterol.] It is likely that 7 players vying for one starting spot is too many and some type of move is necessary.
  16. Nice story, Seth, Thanks. Looking at this list, have any of them played in the major leagues? I believe not with the Twins, but not certain if any played elsewhere. What would be interesting is learning what they are all doing now. Are some still in the minor leagues? Are any out of baseball, and if so does anyone know what they are doing?
  17. Thanks for the reply, Tom. Its helps to understand your thought process going thru this process. But a .338 BABIP for Arraez should be expected as that is at or lower than his actual batting average much of the year (taking out the first couple weeks at AA after the promotion). To be honest, I would expect his BABIP to be higher next year.
  18. Got to be excited about that top 3. And what can you say about AK after a season beyond what anyone could have expected. If 2019 is anything like this year, expect to see him at Target Field next September. And you have to be so happy for Gelly, what a year. What was a shock, to me at least, was seeing Arraez at #8. Checked to see why and to be honest, can't understand that three of you didn't vote for him in their top 8? Also, a bit surprised to find LaMonte Wade as an honorable mention. Really had a disappointing year. I will be surprised if he is added to the 40-man in November. Thought the quotes from Zoll were a big plus to your report, Seth. Liked his comment about 'pushing' Rooker. That together with how slow he started the first month makes one wonder if he can make it to the Twins by next summer? Thanks for all the work this year guys.
  19. Next spring is going to be interesting. Assuming the Twins don't sign any starters over the winter, their Top 4 starters next spring will likely be Berrios-Gibson-Odorizzi-Pineda. That leaves one opening for Mejia, Slegers, Stewart, DeJong, Romero, Littell and Thorpe. Doubt Thorpe will be ready and will start at Rochester. That leaves six others battling for one spot. Mejia is out of options, so all the others except one will be the eligible to be starters for the Red Wings. Will the FO be comfortable going into the spring with that group? Or will they sign one veteran free agent just in case Pineda doesn't make it? With all those numbers, most likely scenario may be that we see a trade over the winter.
  20. JR and I were there maybe 10 years ago, or a bit longer. Kind of in between your visits. Enjoyed the ballpark and downtown Cleveland. Remember staying at the Marriott where the Twins were also at. The one thing I recall is having breakfast a few tables from Scott Baker and his wife. Remember she was visibly upset about something. Also recall a nice restaurant area several blocks west of the Marriott. Didn't do any of the fun things you do first time in Cleveland, rock and roll hall of fame, sub, etc. We did those while passing thru every fall when taking JR to BC. Just enjoyed the games and hung out talking about father/son stuff.
  21. What a great year for Wells. Really hope he can continue pitching like this as he moves up. What was shocking to me is that three of you did not include Lewis Thorpe in your Top 5. Curious why? When I look at this group, I believe he has the best chance of joining the Twins at some time next year AND being successful. I believe Graterol has the highest ceiling of anyone in the minors, but don't expect him being ready to join the Twins in 2019. Hope like hell he will, but its too much of a long shot. Should be fun following the career of Colina the next couple years. Stocky and strong, would the word 'bulldog' be a good description of him and his pitching style?
  22. Here's a question for Seth, Steve or others. It is likely the Twins will keep two lefty relievers on opening day next year. One will be Taylor Rodgers. If they have to choose between Moya and Vasquez, who do they pick? Moya has more experience. Will he be the better choice on April 1? But does Vasquez have a higher ceiling? Curious what you think.
  23. Everyone wanted to see all these young pitchers. Well, we got em. Maybe one of the reasons the front office wasn't pushing all these guys up is that they had a feeling they either aren't all that good or ready for the big show. All those walks last night was worse than being in a dentist chair waiting for him to pull a tooth. Maybe the real pitching talent in the organization is further away, Class AA and lower.
  24. What a year for Vasquez. Can he become that special short man like the Indian's Miller? Have been on the Moran bandwagon for over a year. My question for November is who of the rule 5 eligible group will be left off the roster? Seems they won't have the space to add all the guys at risk of being lost. Will it be Reed? Anderson? Jay? Wade? Was a bit surprised looking at the ERA's of the 'Other' group. All, except Moya, were in the mid 3's. And I don't know what to think about Busenitz. Very good at Rochester with some really ugly outings when with the Twins?
