Didn't realize that, Steve. Hadn't checked the log to see what happened in the extra innings.

Thanks a lot for keeping us up to date on the AFL, Steve. Expect Tommy Watkins may be second guessing his decision to not use Bray in the 10th inning of the championship game. Had he, they may still be playing. And yes I will say it again, I hate that bloody extra inning rule of putting a guy on second base. Must disagree a bit about your comments on Jax, namely that you end with a so-so judgement of his time in the AFL. He hasn't pitched at a level higher than Hi-A and all the players in the league were at that level or higher. Add to that the limited professional innings he has pitched together with the vastly greater experience of everyone in the league and I believe he did very well. I continue to see a track in which we see Jax being a solid middle of the rotation starter for the Twins for many years, perhaps as soon as late 2020.

Or Arraez will hit .350 the first month at AA, then .350 at Rochester for a couple months before moving up to the Twins where he will do the same. Yes that comment is unlikely. Or is it? This kid has hit well over .300 at every stop he has been at. As for all the pitchers that weren't added, the Twins must feel that none of them are better than the 10 prospects they already had on the roster...now 9 with Busenitz gone.

I don't know what to think of Jay, Seth. My thoughts are that if they don't protect him, he will probably be selected and then turn it around. Kind of thinking no matter what they do it will probably end up wrong. And as for Curtiss, don't disagree he was great at Rochester. What is disappointing was that neither he, or any of these young guys, have come up and gotten it done for the Twins. When will one of these guys in the organization come up and be lights out from day 1. Will agree that most haven't been given much of an opportunity.

I don't know what to think about all the kind of good relief pitchers. After the recent disappointment from players like Curtiss and Busenitz, I am more skeptical of all these guys. Tyler Jay's draft status will probably get him selected if not protected. Is this the year he turns the corner and becomes the pitcher we all hoped for/expected? Probably, but still don't see why he would be put on the 40-man. Agree with Seth that Arraez is on the bubble. Really believe in this kid, but do understand his limitations. I wouldn't have added Wade without removing Granite or Reed. Expect one of them to be gone before the end of the Winter meetings. Don't know if they are gonna add anyone today, guess we best wait and see.

Salt River lost a nailbiter, 3-2, in Saturday's championship game. Tommy Watkins opted to keep all the Twins players on the pines for the game. A bit surprised that none of them got into the game.- 21 replies

Article: Twins Add To Coaching Staff

Looked at the Twins website. They have all these new guys listed, but still show Guardado as the bullpen coach. I know it has been reported that he is gone. But why hasn't he been removed like the others? Could it be that Hefner is in fact an assistant pitching coach and Guardado has been retained as the bullpen guy? Confusing!- 40 replies

Only negative I see with Donaldson is that he is a right handed hitter, correct? With Sano and Austin also right handed, a leftie would be nice. Granted, with Rosario, Kepler, Castro and Polanco all being able to hit from the left side, the overall balance is ok. Just means you can't platoon him with Sano/Austin. Of this group, he is the only one that gets me a little excited. Problem I see with Cruz is that you not only can't discount last year being down, you can count on it being the start of his downward spiral. For that reason, he would be a no-no for me.- 39 replies

Let me think about this a moment. Is Kyle Gibson the most senior player on the roster? And is Rosario most senior of every day players? Or is it Grossman? Best get those two signed up so they are around for awhile. As for these two hires, will tell you in July what I think.

I think you are right on, John, about their philosophy this winter. After reading the post by Bollinger the other day on the Twins website, it appears the Twins remain convinced their young core will bring championship baseball to Minneapolis in the future and are going to be patient. Makes sense to me. So I agree that we should see a two infielders and at least one bullpen guy. I can live with that.

Saw Duran pitch a game on Mediacom's Iowa sports channel (why we get that in Wayzata, I don't understand). His fastball is a legit heater and his breaking ball was immense. Kid has some great stuff. Didn't see enough of him to talk about consistency. Still wouldn't put him ahead of Thorpe who had an unbelievable year, all the way up to and including AAA.

Jax just may be one of those finds that come along every once in awhile. I see a mature young man who is putting that AFA education/training to work on the diamond. If you have been trained to lead young men in combat, I suspect he will do fine facing off against hitters once he makes it to Minnesota. So very happy with the success this young man is achieving now that he is playing baseball full time.- 21 replies

Article: Believe in Byron Buxton
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm way too conservative to talk about a contract at this time. If he has a decent, doesn't need to be great, first half with the bat would talk to him in July. I also believe Buxton should be a member of the Twins for a long, long time. If he doesn't solve his problems with the bat this year, spend the next offseason working with him to change the type of hitter he is. Bunt once a game. Bunt with two strikes in a pitchers count, fouling off half is better than striking out on most. I never played the game and don't have a clue, but can they teach him to hit more balls on the ground rather than in the air? Change him to more of a singles hitter and use that speed. Hell, most of his singles can be doubles after a pitch or two to the next batter. Even as a singles hitter, if he gets his average above .260, he is an all-star. -

Article: Twins Tales Up the Middle
rdehring replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Javier certainly has had his timeline extended with all the injuries. But if he is as good as expected, we should see a Lewis-Javier middle infield at some point in the future. Will be then that Polanco either moves to a backup middle infielder/DH role or a valuable trade piece to move elsewhere.- 25 replies

Article: Twins Tales Up the Middle
rdehring replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Would love to know when the Twins 'expect' Lewis to be here, full time? It is possible, however not realistic, to expect him to take the job in 2019. But sometime in 2020 is likely. Anything after that will be disappointing. So any of the above options for someone on a 2 year contract (or 1 year + an option) makes the most sense. If it is a shortstop, Polanco moves to second next year. If it is a second baseman, he stays at short until Lewis arrives. And lets all pray that this next superstar arrives with a bigger bang than the last two.- 25 replies

Donaldson to Fix Twins Hot Corner?
rdehring commented on Ted Schwerzler's blog entry in Off The Baggy
For the Twins to consider Donaldson, we would have to know what they are expecting out of Sano. Is he doing a good job continuing to cut weight? What type of workout plan is he on, and is he doing it? Is he still planning on winter ball? The Twins have a lot of information about him that we don't. If Sano is on plan, doubt we will see anything done at 3B. If he isn't, something like Donaldson on a 1 or 2 year plan may make a lot of sense. If you see them talking to/signing Donaldson, it tells us Miguel is putting pounds on rather than taking them off.- 17 comments

That is true, if the intent is to miss the first 3-4 hitters. But the numbers game, ie, averages first time thru the order include all 9 hitters. Expect the opener theory deals with the first 3-4 hitter issue. But if they begin looking at first time thru the order versus second, third, don't be surprised if we begin seeing them stack 3 pitchers in a game with one time thru the order for each....plus a closer for the 9th.
-
If the intent is to get a pitcher to not have to pitch to batters 3x a game, that also means that your starter/primary pitcher is going to pitch less innings. If this concept becomes accepted throughout the league, it seems to me that it will eventually change pitching as we know it. The eventual result to me is pitchers pitching once through the order, ie, 2-3 innings. So the team would need 3 pitchers for every game with pitchers pitching every third day/game. They could then have another 3-4 relievers who would be 1-2 inning guys to come in if one of the three gets into trouble. So the #1 pitchers in the league would pitch in about a third of the games (54) for 3 innings max (162 innings). PItchers would have to train their arms different. Each team would also need 9 primary pitchers versus the current 5 starters. If that first time thru the order is so much better, this seems like where they will end up. And won't all those 1-0 games be exciting? Only problem is what happens with double headers and extra innings? Every team will need a couple Chris Giminez type players.

Article: Miguel Looking for His Yasiel Moment
rdehring replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If you read my comment, Carole, you will see that I said 260...something. That is anything under 270. Let's see what he is when he reports to spring training. Maybe he will surprise some of us and report in great shape and tear it up next year. I would love to see that, however, will wait to see it.- 17 replies

But the weight will tell us if he has worked out all winter. It is unlikely he would work out hard and come to spring training at 290-300.- 17 replies

Got thinking after reading the above. Has anyone heard if there was serious damage to the ballpark in Pensacola? It is right on the water near the point where the hurricane came on shore.
