  1. Can we all sit back and wait until the season starts to bash the FO for what they did, or didn't do. Heck, last year they signed most of their big signees during spring training. And didn't they also complete their biggest trade (Odorizzi) during spring training? As for all the talk about what their payroll should be and how much the Pohlads make, none of you know what you speak of unless you have seen their financial statements. And I am guessing that none of you have. All the reports you hear are hearsay, even if the person making it maintains he/she did see their financials. For some of us, this constant bashing of everything management is doing gets very old.
  2. I couldn't believe it when I saw another Machado article for everyone to beat to death. Personally, I don't want Machado on my team.
  3. So if he makes it to Labor Day or a few days more he gets $3.2mm. Interesting way of adding incentives. I don't recall seeing this type of bonus structure. Does anyone recall seeing this with the Twins? Now the question is who will be departing. Will it be another reliever? Or Granite/Reed?
  4. I don't see it that way. Romero is limited to every 5th day, but with the other 6 guys they have a 7 man bullpen (12 man staff + 13 position players). The other 6 only need to cover the other four starters. If those four starters average more than 6 innings each start (Berrios and Gibson at 7+ with Odorizzi and Pineda at 5+), they would pitch about 12 innings every time thru the rotation (4 of 5 games). That works out to 2 innings every 5 games for the 6 other guys in the pen...or about 64 innings for the season. Now no manager will have them all pitching the same and there are a few extra inning games, but that would be a light load for the pen.
  5. I like Mejia as #5. But rather than using an opener, why not give the bullpen the day off and stack Romero with him. Let Mejia go 4-5 and bring in Romero to close the game with another 4-5. Would keep Romero's innings down to say 130-140 which works with previous year's work loads.
  6. Expect that at least three of the guys you have in the lineup, Cody, will burn out on their way to the Twins or for various reasons be gone. Expect there is a good chance Austin will be gone by opening day. I like following minor league guys as much as anyone. But I don't see the Twins having a roster in 2022 that is made up almost entirely of players with three or less years experience. Gotta believe that more than Buxton from the current young core (Rosario, Buxton, Kepler, Sano, and Polanco) will be with the team in three short years.
  7. Don't know what I was thinking, or not thinking, when I read that Seth. Guess was having a senior moment. Thanks for clarifying what I should have known!
  8. Agree Seth, that it makes a ton of sense to extend Gibson, Rosario and May. Would like to see Rosario extended at least three years with a team option that vests under XYZ. Everyone keeps writing articles about how the Twins must spend a lot more money. I don't understand that logic if they can field the team THEY WANT TO for less dollars. Anyway, getting these three under contract for the next 3-4 years makes a ton of sense, at least to me. Have a question about Buxton, Seth. If he has 2.160 years service time, what was all the hoopla about last fall? Another 30 days would put him at 2.460. Maybe that makes him a super-2, but doesn't change when he can become a free agent. What am I missing?
  9. Maybe it is wishful thinking, but doesn't Sano look smaller than last spring? I expect you are right and Astudillo begins the year in Rochester. Is the #13 player in my book and expect the Twins will open the season with only 12 players. Will be good to be in Rochester where he can play every day. But I really hope we see a lot of him over the summer...could easily become one of my favorite Twins.
  10. The only negative I see is that he is 33 years old. Will he be 34 by opening day? But that probably helps getting him signed to a 2 year contract, ala Reed. Speaking of Reed, real good chance that one of the two has a good year as the Twins closer. If both pitch as hoped for...look out Central Division!
  11. I can't remember, did that starting rotation look as bad five years ago as it does today? Questionable if most of those guys could start for Rochester this summer. Aren't most extensions done around the time both sides are going to their arbitration hearing? If Gibson is going to be extended, I hope he is, I expect that is when it will happen. Expect the others, Rosario and Berrios, could come shortly before spring training starts. Lots of other things to do right now, like get at least one late inning reliever.
  12. Well the above comments will certainly get some attention. And not much that I can disagree with. But fast forward to today and all indications are that Sano is working hard this winter. Expect we will all learn if that is truthful when some of you see him when he reports to Fort Myers in mid-to-late February. Personally, I hope that Nick can rename this article this spring...to something like "the Rise, Fall and Resurrection of Miguel Sano." Come on big guy, put the work in and make us smile!
  13. It seemed to me that your criteria kept shifting, Nick. For that reason I would love to see you write up the criteria that you used in this exercise. Then set up a graph and fit each player into it with X, Y, Z values based on that criteria. Got a feeling the results would be different than what we have seen.
  14. 40-man is already down to only 21 pitchers. With the abundance of outfielders, 7, I will be shocked if the player DFA'd isn't Granite or Reed. Won't DFA/trade any pitchers until they need a spot to add that relief pitcher brought in for the end of the bullpen.
  15. I really hope you are wrong, Nick, and the Twins do have insight into how Sano's offseason program is progressing. They have to, don't they?
  16. Appreciate someone putting some value on Kepler. Lets remember where he came from and that it was expected he would take more time to develop. He has the ability to be a special player, very special. I trust management knows that and has zero interest in moving him. Everyone points out how Rosario's 2018 was down a bit from 2017. But no one is talking about the reasons. Rosario and Escobar fed off each other's play. When Escobar left, Rosario's production dipped. He was also playing thru some serious injuries the last month or so of the year. Discount those brutal numbers and his results look much different. Like everyone, Nick, I am having a hard time zeroing in on the exact criteria you are using for this exercise. Have a tough time seeing Romero having more value than Polanco or Rosario.
  17. Have followed this kid since he was lights out in the Australian Winter League back in 2013-2014. He was turning 18 and in a league with a mix of everything from guys with a cup of coffee to a lot of A and Hi-A ballplayers. If memory serves, he had the second best ERA in the league up until one of his last starts. I know most feel that Thorpe doesn't have the stuff to be a front of the rotation starter. After missing two entire years of development, I agree he needs both experience and work on a couple aspects of his game. I see Thorpe as a pitcher who does have what it takes to make the next start every game after Berrios. Is that as an number one, with Berrios as an ACE, or number two? Only time will tell, but I have 100% confidence this kid is going to get there and be part of that young rotation that the Twins will win with as we enter the next decade.
  18. Very interesting, Nick. But the biggest disagreement I would have of your first 10 is Gonsalves. I don't see him as ever being more than a AAAA pitcher for the Twins. One of those great minor league guys that can't get it done on the big stage. Not only wouldn't I have him in the Top 20 most valuable, I wouldn't have him on the list if you did a Top 30. Hopefully he will prove me wrong, but I expect he will be out of the organization within two years.
  19. Smart move would be to hang on to him thru spring training. But that means someone else needs to go today/tommorrow when Cruz is added to the roster. My choice would be Granite or Reed. With that said, wouldn't be surprised to see Austin traded later today to open that spot.
  20. Was busy and wasn't going to read this, Parker, until I saw you wrote it. What a great look at who the Twins are getting. When everyone was calling for the Twins to sign him, I wasn't on board. Saw the drop in his average/OPS last year and thought it may be the first down year of several. But when I saw they got him on a one year contract, with team options, began to like the signing more. After reading this, I am excited. If nothing else, he just may help all those young kids that have so much potential. And if he does, look out AL Central.
  21. What you said is exactly what I have been thinking for awhile.
  22. I am of the opinion that the fact the Twins got Cron for nothing enhances his value to the team. Thus, I agree that he has a lot of value to the Twins. And lets remember where he came from, Tampa, who has a history of waiving/trading fine players for nothing or nearly nothing (think the Odorizzi trade). Prior to last year, my problem with Mejia was his not being able to finish batters and being unable to get into the fifth inning, much less getting thru it. I also thought his fielding in 2017 left a lot to be desired. Although he missed a lot of last year, I saw improvements in both of my concerns. Personally, am looking forward to his being the fifth starter with Romero coming on at the start, or end, of the fifth inning and closing out the games with four-five innings. I wouldn't have Javier as one of the 20 most valuable Twins. You referred to his playing shortstop in the DSL in 2016. What you didn't mention was that his season lasted 9 games (I thought it was 3, but looked it up and it was 9). So in his three professional seasons he has missed all or almost all of two of them. To me, that cuts into his value greatly. Can he recover by staying on the field in 2019? Certainly, and I hope he does and has a season to remember. But valuing assets needs to be done at the time of the valuation...today. Thus, Javier would not be on my list.
  23. The last two years Gordon has had excellent first halves of the season. Then in the second half he was bad two years ago and worse last year...at least with his bat. Does that mean that scouting reports/pitchers are catching up with him? Or does it mean his body wears down as the season goes on? Or maybe, some combination of the two. One thing he can do to get stronger and more durable is work harder all winter. Maybe he does. But when blogs highlite photos of his rap endeavor, some of us see them and wonder whether he is working as hard as he should on his main profession. As I said, I have no way of knowing if he is, or isn't.
  24. WOW! I have previously stated that I believe the decline we saw last year will continue, thus, we will see less home runs this year and another dip in average and OPS. But the fact it is a one year contract WITH a Twins option alleviates much of my concern. Good short-term risk to help this team in 2019. Also read that he may be a good leader/role model for some of our young Latin players, thinking of you Mr. Sano. Would be fantastic if Cruz did perform at a level close to last year and worked well with Sano, who I understand has been working hard on his conditioning this winter. Big question is who will be gone from th4 40-man and how they will accomplish it. I expect it will be one of the outfielders, Granite or Reed. Expect they won't have room on the 25-man for Cron, Cruiz and Austin, although would like to see Austin stick until spring training. Now forward to the playoffs TWINS!
