Article: NYM 9, MIN 6: Forever of a 5th Inning
rdehring replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Uggh, that was ugly. Sure is interesting how Baldelli is willing to go with the new guy called up that morning in that situation. In the past, Vasquez would have sat in the bullpen for several days before getting used. Unfortunately, he was really bad last night. Don't know what to think about him, or the decision to use him at that point in the game...kind of a head scratcher for me. Morneau mentioned something I had been thinking about. It appeared they were going to pinch hit for Odorizzi in the top of the 5th had he come up to bat. Did that have some mental effect on him when he came back out? Or did they see something in his last inning to question whether or not he was at the end. All in all, puzzling both as to pinch hitting for him and how he went from unhittable to unable to throw a strike. Wasn't all that worried having Moya, Reed and McGill on the IL. Well that has changed. Does anyone know how soon any of these could be back? -
The more I think about Romero's outing, I am excited for how he was used. Going 3+ innings tells me they are stretching him out to be used in long relief. Once he has done this for a half dozen games, and assuming he continues to pitch very well, he could be brought up to fill a similar role with the Twins. Already have seen a couple games where he would be invaluable in that role. Further assuming he settles in and does well with the Twins, he could then slide into a starters role later in the year should one of their five starters go on the IL.

Article: MIN 14, NYM 8: Beating the Best
rdehring replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Unfortunately, didn't have all that many games televised back then. Was at the end of my college journey and didn't have a lot of time to watch what was on tv. But do recall the hype that surrounded him seemingly every time he went out on the mound. Damn, he was special. -
Great to see that very good outing by Romero. After all, he is the one prospect close to joining the Twins who could make a real difference for the big club this year! Great interview and yes, it sounds like he has his dream job. I know I sure as heck would like to spend my winters in Pensacola getting ready for opening day. And after reading that interview I am almost more excited about Kirilloff than I was before reading it. Can this kid really be this good? And if so, when will he be back on the field and when will he arrive in Minny?

What a fantastic game to watch. I have the utmost respect for Bob Gibson, who in my opinion was one of the greatest pitchers ever. Never saw him pitch, but recall how dominant he was at that time. Thank You Twins for keeping his amazing record on the books versus sliding to Number 2. There has been lots of talk about roster revamping. The Twins have what, three potential bullpen guys (McGill, Mayo and Reed) on the IL and will need spots for a couple at some time over the coming weeks. DeJong is one spot, if not gone by Friday, and Harper is probably another. Doesn't solve what to do when Sano is ready. But can you imagine this lineup if Sano finally turns the corner and hits like we know he can? -
The most surprising point to me this morning, Seth, was your comment that Arraez turns 22 today. It seems that he has been having multi-hit games forever and even after missing most of two years ago still is that young. May be more of a prospect than we think, and I think he is a future major leaguer. Interesting to see how Mobile kept him from having another multi-hit game...walk him 3 times. But perhaps even more surprising is what the heck is Guerro doing playing A ball? Is it merely a holding period until his 17 games or over? Or is he on some type of rehab from a spring injury? Looking forward to see how Stewart and Rijo throw the ball tonight.

Article: Tyler Austin Traded to San Francisco
rdehring replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Great seeing the Twins get something in return for a player who just didn't have a spot on the roster after last winter's moves. That isn't something we would have seen in the past. Not certain whether to be excited about what they got in return. I guess the bad news is he will need to go on the 40-man roster this November or be eligible for the Rule 5 draft...seeing he was 19 years old when drafted/signed in 2016. Not a lot of position players get selected, so that probably isn't going to be a problem. -
Article: Twins Minor League Report (4/7): Ober Easy
rdehring replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Will be interesting to see where Moya goes when off the IL. Could Vasquez be surpassing him as the next lefty called up to the big club this year? Great starts by Jax and Ober, really great start by Ober with 11 K's in 6 shutout innings. I see elsewhere that Sano is nearing his rehab assignment. Expect it will start with a couple EST games before sliding over for a few games with the Miracle. I see the Blue Wahoos (gonna have to get used to that name) have a 5 game homestand against Mobile from the 20th (a week from Saturday) thru the 24th. Will be real surprised if he isn't in that series as the weather in upstate New York can still be questionable at that time. Also would be real nice to have a player with Sano's status getting into a couple games for a club new to the organization. Could then either move on to the Twins or to Rochester on the 25th...who will then be at home versus Pawtuckett. Looks like he should be back by May 1. Will be curious what move the Twins make to open a spot for him.- 15 replies

What a great day for two starting pitchers, Sands and Smeltzer. That Dozier trade is starting to look like a steal as Raley also looked good in ST. I may have missed it, but does anyone know why Javier is in EST? I know he got removed from a Twins early ST game with an injury. But I believed he played in a couple of their last games of the spring. Is it a precaution? Or are they letting him miss the cold games in Cedar Rapids?

Now that's the way to play baseball. What a fun game to watch. Expect the FO knew that Austin was the first to go when they needed that next roster spot (12th pitcher after next week or Sano). Just ended up pulling the trigger early. Still have a big decision when Sano is healthy. Will it be Cave or one of the two catchers with options to the minors? Or will they do something with one of their two backup infielders. Has to be one of those 5. Or maybe there will be another injury by then which will delay the inevitable.

That callup logic is sure gonna change, is it this September or next? Only being able to call up two guys is a huge mistake in my opinion. I understand not having all 40-guys on the bench, but there should be more than 28.

Two multi hit games to open the season for Arraez, what else is new? That was an exciting lineup of starters. None pitched deep into the game, but that's to be expected early in the season. Will be fun to follow all four of these guys all season long.

You can make the argument that the bottom 5 of this group all have a real chance of someday playing in the bigs. I don't know if you could have said that a few years ago or at anytime I can recall. Really like the depth that has been added to this system. One name I don't see and wouldn't expect to see is Benninghoff. Did you see anything of him this spring? If so, what does he look like and where is he headed this year? Having Enlow make the start for Cedar Rapids last night is an indication the organization thinks highly of him. The results weren't good. Do you think it was opening night jitters? Or could have been that this his first game ever pitched in a cold climate?

Article: Twins Winning in the Margins
rdehring replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I like Doc's thought process about trading Castro by June. Add a couple of those quality prospects who would be Rule 5 eligible this fall with no room on the 40-man and maybe they can return a nice prospect a bit further down the ladder and/or a good reliever for the stretch run this year.- 17 replies

Article: Twins Minor League Report (4/4): Opening Night
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
One day in the books, thanks Seth. And any day is a good one when the organization has a WINNING day! Looked at that picture of Diaz, is he really that skinny? It's only one game, but what a start to the season. Is Ryan Eades ever going to get a shot with the Twins? Was watching gameday for a bit while he was in and getting the 4 K's. Also saw this Phillips kid had 4 K's in a couple innings. See he was signed at the end of last year and got a few innings before the season ended. Nothing else on this kid other than he is from Baylor. If last night is any indication of what he can be, what can you tell us about him, Seth? What has he been doing since college or did he graduate in 2018? Also, do you think Rortvedt read your Top 20 yesterday and has a bit of a chip on his shoulder?- 34 replies

I was thinking this exact thing as I read this earlier today. Gotta believe these young studs in the FO will have a handle on this and will move a few of those who could be at risk this summer. Whether its part of a deal to bring in help for 2019 or a younger prospect further away from that Rule 5 day or reckoning.

Really like what I am seeing from Mejia. Once they are on the regular 5-day rotation, expect we will see Mejia as the 2-3 inning reliever backing up short starts, especially from Pineda who will have his innings limited a bit. Doubt Mejia will be the one to step in as the #5 starter when one of the five goes on the IL. Gonna be fun seeing how Baldelli gets all three catchers reasonable at bats. Expect Gardy would love to come back and manage the Twins with this three headed monster behind the plate.

Trying to understand exactly what you are using as your criteria, Seth. I am assuming this is not position players, but based strictly on hitting? Or is defense included, but discounted? Reason I ask is not seeing Rortvedt in a Top 20 of position players would otherwise be shocking to me. Not quibbling over your ranking, but the player I think will move up this list greatly during the coming season in Raley. Really liked what I saw from him in early ST games.

Article: Three Catcher Conundrum

Is Astudillo working himself into the backup catcher role? Expect to see him playing around the diamond, especially after Gonzalez play last night, but he could be earning more playing time behidn the plate. -
Article: 2019 Rochester Red Wings Preliminary Roster
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
When I look at the Rochester lineup, Doc, I look for two different things. I want to see a team with a few of our top prospects. you know, those guys that if needed will be ready to step in and help the Twins. A couple guys like Rooker and Thorpe who if not ready opening day should be by June/July. But I also look for a team with several veteran minor league guys who can help this team compete in the International League. I want the Twins to put a team on the field that the Rochester fans can get excited about because they win and compete. I know it is difficult for a lot of teams in the Northern Division to make the playoffs because of the screwy playoff set-up. But lets hope like heck that the Red Wings are playing ball the week after Labor Day this year. And I think this team can be exciting as in addition to a few minor league vets they also have a few guys like Torreyes who should be very good in the IL while also providing depth should the Twins have an injury in their infield. As for your concerns, I think Navaretto could be added at any time and would provide excellent defense. I also think the bullpen is going to be a strength as Eades, Vasquez and Baxendale all could probably be solid back of the pen relievers for the Twins or several other teams. So when I look at this team I get very excited. I see several pitchers who just may help the Twins this year and really like Rooker, Raley and Wade as outfield depth or players who will push for jobs in 2020.- 23 replies
