Why are baseball and professional sports unions different than most other unions. If you have a carpenter crew, they all get paid the same unless you are an apprentice. So a player's first year is at a fixed rate as a rookie/apprentice. After that, the league takes 50% of the revenue and divides by the number of players. Everybody gets paid the same. Build in some type of bonuses for doing X, Y and Z. Maybe the bonuses can double or even triple your annual return. That's how the trade unions do it, or at least did back when I was building things. Why not baseball?

Article: Twins 2018 Short Season Hitter Of The Year
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Interesting how Williams and Jeffers were both question marks on draft day. Did the Twins draft both because they could sign them cheap and use the money on others taken in the top 10? We will never know. Three months later, both are pleasant surprises. Do they continue to perform well and make it to the Twins? Only time will tell, although the odds are long. But wasn't it fun watching both of them mash all summer? And I loved the Twins signing Severino, even though it took up nearly half this year's International Pool.- 10 replies

Love the Evansville ballpark, Seth. It is an old one with a wooden roof over the grandstand. JR played a Legion tourney there many years ago. Believe it was one of the main parks used for the movie, "League of their own."

Article: Twins 2018 Short Season Pitcher Of The Year
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Sounds like the Twins may have found a good one in Cabezas. Also sounds like a sharp young man who understands the cultural differences between Miami and eastern Tennessee! This is one of the categories where I wish you would include the players from the DSL. Expect there would have been lots of #1 votes for Anthony Escobar if you had. Coming back from TJ surgery, what are your thoughts on Benninghoff?- 8 replies

Article: Where Are The Twins Getting It Wrong?
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Count me among those that believe they haven't done all that much wrong. The problems leading to this year's failure are the result of bad luck, lack of performance by several critical parts of this team, a bad decision by their shortstop and a failure by most of the free agent signings who all looked good on paper. I hope they don't make too many radical moves this coming off-season. Rather, they should focus on signing a few of their in house youngsters, Berrios, Rosario and Gibson...well, Gibson isn't young anymore. Then sink or swim next year to some extent based on whether or not the two super prospects, Buxton and Sano, perform. If not, going into 2020 write them out of the plan and move on. They also need a second baseman. Go get Eduardo back should take care of that. As for the on field staff, agree that there seems to be something missing and a change might make sense. -
Congrats to the Miracle, what a year! Thank you Seth, and everyone else for keeping us up to date on another season of minor league ball. It really is appreciated. One question, when is the last time the Twins had two champions in one year? Expect there have been a few years, but I can't recall when. Who is this Alex Phillips, Seth? Checked his bio and appears he signed with the Twins a few weeks ago. Certainly was surprised to see him pitching late in the game last night rather than Moran. Have a great day guys, enjoy your off-season.

What a game from Lewis. And another good game at the plate for Miranda. Add in a good start from Graterol and they had a chance. Unfortunately, not a lot going with the bats anywhere else in the lineup. Let's get it done tonight rather than going to game 5! What a wonderful season for the Kernels. Congrats! Too bad they couldn't extend it one series further and play for the championship. Was a long summer for lots of those college guys who began playing back in February. Many will get a couple weeks off before reporting to instructs. Lots of talented prospects in this group that will be exciting to watch next year and beyond.

I'll second that thought, Seth. Will be sad not having baseball to read about every morning. And that ends when these two teams end their run, sure isn't much fun reading/talking/thinking bout the Twins. I may be sounding like a broken record, but another great game from Miranda. 2019 could be real special for that kid. And wasn't it great seeing Jax suck it up and pitch so well? That AFA training to be a leader of men in combat probably gives him an added something to fall back on. Win one of three and they are in, why not today behind Graterol? 12 hits and 5 walks and the Kernels scored only 3 runs? They just couldn't get enough key hits to support a great start by Sammons, who has had a nice year. Now they need to win today. Didn't OSU face several elimination games on their way to the college world series championship? Larnach came up big for them, maybe he will do it again today?

Great games for Baddoo and Miranda. Don't know about his D, but Miranda's bat just may play on the big stage. Sure has been good in the playoffs. Am I correct and the Miracle have both Graterol and Cutura available for 2 of the remaining 4 games? I know Jax hasn't been as sharp the last couple times out. Expect the innings have begun getting to him. See that he was pitching on 5 days rest, will have 7 days rest today so maybe he will be closer to what he was earlier in the season. Would be nice to travel over to Daytona with a 2-0 lead!

Very interesting group, Seth. Expect most of us follow the Top Prospects closely. But I am less familiar with this entire top 6, except for Duran who came over in the trade. Wouldn't it be exciting if one of these guys actually made it into the Twins regular rotation a few years from now. And looking at these numbers seems to indicate it could happen. Speaking of trades, what a haul for Lance Lynn. Twins gave up two months of a guy who was doing very little for us. In return got a power guy who just may be a part of their immediate future. The fact they also got a low level prospect like Rijo is almost too good to be true. Congrats to the FO for that deal! Gotta also do a shout out to Schulfer, after all he is from central Wisconsin.

Article: Kirilloff's 2018 One for the Ages
rdehring replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Great article, Ted. And great discussion! Expect AK will be in Chattanooga in the spring. What happens after that remains to be seen. We can speculate all we want (yes, I want him at Target Field asap), but he will determine how fast he advances. As for me, will hold my breath and hope that this kid turns out to be that special player we thought we had a few years ago with Sano and Buxton. -

I will join Han Joelo in that search for the trifecta! To get there, the Kernels will be playing ball for much of September as the MWL championship requires winning three series and last night was game 1. The Appy League Twins and Fort Myers only need to win two series for the championship. Although they may never play an inning for the Twins, Duran and Maciel (+ De La Trinidad) are sure looking like a good return for two months of Escobar. Both players showed up when it mattered most. As did Jeffers with 2 home runs and a 3-4 night and Cabbage with a pinch hit granny!

Hoefully, Vasquez can develop into that big time lefty set-up guy like Brad Hand or Miller. With his rapid rise thru the organization this year, expect it could be a year or two before he really settles into what he can be. Was wondering about your comments about Reed, Seth. There seem to be several pitchers/relievers who are on the 40-man bubble (Reed, Jay, Anderson, others). Can understand their not promoting him if he is one of them. But agree that he is deserving and there is a good chance he is gone in December if not added. Ryan Eades won't ever make it to the Twins, will he? Is he a minor league free agent this year if he goes unselected in the rule 5?

Congrats to Elizabethton for another championship. Can this be a year where the organization gets a second? Or even third? Interesting that Sammons is headed back to Cedar Rapids. Do you know what the rules are regarding returning a player for the playoffs? Are there any rules? Fort Myers gets to relax for a night to see whether they play Clearwater or Daytona. Would be interesting if it is Clearwater after facing them this past weekend. We have gotten to expect a couple hits a night from AK, but five! Expect he will begin next year at Chattanooga. If he moves up to AAA mid-season, should be ready to join the Twins in late August or September as a 21 year old. Hopefully, by then the Twins will be a much different team because the current version is a mess.

Couldn't have been a better day down on the farm, 2-0. ETon now moves home with a chance to win the championship tonight. Would be a great win for a team who I considered an underdog, at least on paper. Isn't it crazy how we expect AK to have multi-hit games? Great seeing Lewis play a role in their win. Not certain the Miracle pitching staff is good enough to win a championship? Will see how they do, but game one sure was a good one by Cutura. Really looking forward to tonight's start by Duran.

Curious, Seth, who from the past you feel had seasons similar to AK? Could be interesting comparing their later success to where we think AK can go...or beyond? Add me to the list of those excited about Rortvedt's future. Expect some of our excitement comes from catching depth being a position of need for the Twins. Must state, however, that I am also pleased with the success Garver made this year. Garver-Castro should be fine for the Twins until Ben gets here and shares the spot with Mitch. And what can anyone say about two diamonds in the rough the Twins found with Helman-Davis. Should they develop into quality big leaguers, these type of later round finds can make a good team better.

Yes, Hawkins is good to listen to. Also really like Morneau. Like a lot of what Smalley does, but gets a bit too much at times. After struggling thru watching some Twins this weekend, believe that their first two tasks for the winter are signing Gibby and Rosie to extensions. Then build a team beginning with them.
-
Should Kennys Vargas be a September callup? Take a look at his August numbers and I ask, why not? If not, I really hope he signs with someone over the winter that will give him a legitimate shot at success. Should Mauer retire (I both hope and think not), would Austin/Vargas be a workable duo at 1B and DH? One guy that's going to be interesting to watch in the AFL is Luke Raley. Want to learn more about him. Congrats to the Fort Myers Miracle. Can they do some damage in the playoffs with that roster? Tell the truth, am kind of glad that the Kernels lost yesterday. Not certain I would want to enter the playoffs on a 9-game winning streak. Would rather they start a new one! And congrats to ETon who move on to the finals against this year's Appy League's winningest team, Princeton (44-22). The Rays are also the league's best hitting team, although the Twins pitching stats are a bit better. Should be good matchup.

The Miracle won behind Graterol. Charlotte is losing by a run in the top of the 9th. Can Florida hold on? If they do, the Miracle and Charlotte will end the season tied for 1st and a playoff spot.

Although I too would like to see as many of these young arms as possible, Romero's last couple starts indicate he is outta gas. Probably best to shut him down and go home to rest.

What a rotten time for the Miracle to go on a two game losing streak. Now they need to win today and HOPE that Charlotte loses. I cannot tell you how much I hate this bloody minor league extra innings rule. No way of knowing how that run effected last night's ETon game? Has anyone else noticed the influx of Venezuelan players the last few years? I believe the Kernels have six on their roster, almost a quarter of the team. And I recall the GCL Twins and DSL Twins were both loaded with kids from there. Wonder if this has been by design, or just chance? And if intended, why? Maybe Seth or some of the guys could ask one of their contracts about this.

One problem with calling up Reed and Anderson is that they are not on the 40-man roster. Yes, most of us see several players on the current roster who could be released. The problem with adding some of these, however, if you don't plan to have them on the 40-man next spring they have to go thru waivers as opposed to just hanging on to them until they are minor league free agents (they are Rule 5 eligible). I recall us losing a few relievers in past years because of this.
