It seems to me an extension offer makes more sense than a QO. As someone else said, the only reason to QO him is to get the pick when he walks. But after a guy like Kuechel had to wait months to get an offer with the QO attached, I suspect guys like Odorizzi, Gibson and Pineda would also have trouble finding suitors willing to give up the pick. They all have flaws, though different ones. Of the three, Odorizzi is likely the one a team (or maybe a few teams) will gamble on offering four years, because he’s the youngest and has no substantial injury history. Gibson is going to have a hard time getting much more than 2 years. Pineda 3 probably. At what price, I can’t say. I haven’t followed other FA signings closely enough the last couple years. Pineda is likely going to get the most per year.

It’s possible the rules have changed in 30 years, but in 1991 the Twins “optioned” Allan Anderson to AA on like August 30th, but were able to recall him just a few days later because the AA season was over.

Baldelli had to leave Perez in because he used all of his high leverage relievers yesterday. And he was forced to do that because Falvine didn’t think it was worth sending Dobnak down for 5 days and replacing him with a long man.

He obviously wouldn’t be on the postseason roster if he performs poorly in September. As to the trust issue, are you suggesting that you would trust Graterol or Alcala, who have never gotten any MLB hitters out ahead of O’Rourke? Because an awful lot of posters seem more than willing to plug them in already. There really aren’t many other candidates other than guys already up or that have been up. As to the issue of not having much recent MLB exposure, I think it could help him. Could be that guys he would be asked to get haven’t seen him. Also, he’s a difficult guy to carry for a full season because he is a loogy. Finally, if Matt Olson or Michael Brantley comes to the plate in the 6th inning in a critical spot, who do I want to face him? My answer is going to be Ryan O’Rourke over everyone on the Twins staff other than Taylor Rogers.

O’Rourke doesn’t fit the description of a “filler” player because he’s a niche player. He’s always only going to be a guy that gets out LHB. Any reliever can be a filler. Sure, it’s POSSIBLE that is why they picked up O’Rourke. But of all the guys that could have been acquired to do so, Falvine just happens to pick a guy that not only could fill a need no one else has shown an ability to fill but also a guy with history (and presumably relationships) with this team and it’s players. He’s already been a teammate of Rogers, May and Duffey, for example. I’m not a big believer in coincidence.

There were other guys that could have been used as org fill at AAA. The only reason to get O’Rourke is to use him as a loogy. I wouldn’t expect him to be used as a loogy in AAA though. It’s the highest level of milb, but it is still milb. It’s more important that he get regular work than to limit who he faces.

The only issue of concern to me about O’Rourke is that he has been walking too many LHB. He’s walked 14 of 83 LHB faced in 2019. That’s at least double what it should be. LHB don’t hit him well at all. That’s at AAA and MLB over the last 3 years. But I don’t think the Twins would have picked up O’Rourke to be AAA fill. Plenty of pitchers were DFA in July/early August. You pick up O’Rourke to fill a need.

The IBB to Cruz could be a preview of things to come if Rosario doesn’t take better at bats. I think his natural ability has masked the fact that he isn’t a guy opponent’s fear because he will get himself out by swinging at bad pitches. Sano swings and misses a lot too, of course. But he’s far more likely to be swinging at strikes than Rosario. It would be another good reason to slot Kepler in the 4 spot and have Arraez lead off vs RHP. Kepler also is a very disciplined hitter.

There were plenty of pitchers DFA in late July/early August. Plenty with more MLB experience than O’Rourke and plenty that aren’t loogys. The only reason to get O’Rourke is because he is a loogy, something noticeably absent from the Twins pen. Walks are definitely a concern, but he’s been just about unhittable by LHB at AAA and MLB for 3 years. His walks seem to come in bunches. He’s had three 3 walk games this year, all in the last 5 weeks. If he were only walking RHB, I would be less concerned. But 14 walks to 83 LHB is at least double what it should be.

I still think the most likely addition being considered for the postseason roster is Ryan O’Rourke. Why acquire him (specifically him) if there is no intent to let him pitch? He’s a loogy, has always been a loogy and always will be. Which means that with the “3 batter minimum” looming, this could be his last chance to pitch at the MLB level

Front Page: The Hazy Future of Fernando Romero
yarnivek1972 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Adalberto Mejia still has better than league average numbers as a starting pitcher at the MLB level. He can’t crack a roster either. If a guy can’t get outs as a reliever, the chances of him doing so as a starter aren’t that good IMO. Romero is allowing about league average hit rate, considerably worse walk rate and slightly better than average K rate. His ERA is better than league average but his RA/G is not. The walk rate is what will hurt him the most at the MLB level. Good MLB hitters won’t swing at many pitches out of the zone. -
Nick Gordon could potentially be a pinch runner type. Might be the best candidate the Twins have (other than Lewis who isn’t going to be added for that purpose).

If the Twins are playing the wild card game as opposed to a divisional series, their roster will be substantially different. If you need more than 9 pitchers for a one game win or go home, you are probably getting clobbered. For a regular series, I would say 12 pitchers at most, more likely 11. Same reasoning. You shouldn’t need to use more than 8 per game ever. With the built in off days, there are never more than 3 straight days without an off day. So, most of the guys should be able to go every game if needed if they are limited to 15-18 pitches.

So, I was looking at Gonsalves’ game logs from his rehab. In his 5 games, he’s thrown 75 pitches, 7 balls. I guess he’s pounding the strike zone. Of course, rookie league guys kinda like to swing.

Front Page: Getting Defensive
yarnivek1972 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
“I’m sure having 34 homers already and playing on a winning team help his case.” It sure as hell shouldn’t but it more than likely will. Which is why the gold glove remains an absolute meaningless joke.- 17 replies

Out of permanently, of course not. But, the presence of another real good starter perhaps allows the Twins to give Berrios the rest he likely needs. As I have said before, I’m not sure they can because even where Berrios is now, he’s probably better than any other option the Twins have. Once again, it’s the Twins saying “We have 5 starters. We don’t need another one.”
