  1. It's funny looking at the lineups for tonight side by side. Or sad, I guess. The Tigers have 3 guys with batting averages under .170. 4 more under .220. The best the Tigers have is Castellano's .242 and Cabrera's .226. Not surprisingly, Tigers have more HR (14) in their lineup than the Twins (10). But BOTH cleanup hitters are hitting in the low .200 range with 0 HR and 6 RBI. Someone call STATS, inc. When was the last time two teams playing each other had 0 HR from their # 4 hitter in the 3rd week of the season? Looking at the head to heads, I see no real advantage. No Twin with substantial AB vs Verlander has hit him. And only James McCann has done much against Santiago. Even Miggy has just 4 RBI in 25 career AB.
  2. I don't think the Twins will be relevant once they start playing better teams - especially outside the division. It's pretty clear that the Royals are dogs and that the Sox aren't much better. Between those two and the Twins any one of them could be in the cellar. However, because all 3 are so bad, it's unlikely any ONE of them loses 100 because they are pretty close to equally bad IMO. When they play each other, someone has to win.
  3. I think what must be done is a fire lit under the player development staff. IMO, the problem isn't on draft day, as some have suggested. First round picks bust out in baseball all the time. It's a far bigger crap shoot than the NFL and especially the NBA. These guys that the Twins are drafting early have talent. But the development staff (primarily minor league coaches and instructors) aren't getting that talent to come out at the MLB level. It's a problem that was ignored for far too long under the old regime. I am hoping that is where Levine and Falvey make their mark. Teams that win consistently, especially in smaller markets, are able to take draft picks and groom them. Take the Cardinals as an example. I believe they have 3 guys on their current roster who were drafted in round 10 or later. That's an example of some minor league coach seeing a specific skill set from a guy early in his pro career. And then honing that skill to make an "organization filler" into a MLB contributor. That's player development. It is something the Twins have been terrible at for years.
  4. I'm actually quite relieved to hear that Wells is 6'1". The list of successful MLB pitchers under 5'10" is neither long nor distinguished. I was worried that a body that small would be susceptible to injury because of a lack of leg drive in the delivery.
  5. You know, a nice follow up to this would be to project a roster on say, June 1st. Who might get hurt? Who might get demoted? Who might get promoted? Could someone be flat out released? That would surely spark conversation.
  6. Personally, I'd rather it be Grossman that gets sent packing. He plays one position, left field. And he plays it poorly. He's going to get most of his at bats vs LHP. At the expense of whom? Rosario or Kepler? They aren't going to improve against LHP if they don't face them. And Rosario's numbers against LHP aren't that bad. Not bad enough to be an automatic sit for sure. At the expense of Mauer? Okay, fine. But that doesn't make him a reserve OFer does it? Maybe Santana doesn't do any one thing exceptionally well. But he has considerable position flexibility. He has speed, something lacking on this roster. He also hits lefties and righties about the same. Santana does a lot of things good enough to get by. Grossman does 1. With just 4 bench players, you really can't have that kind of specialization. You need a guy that can do several things.
  7. You really think it would be wise to let Boshers go because of a couple beat downs in spring training? He was arguably the best overall reliever the Twins had in 2016. Rogers got lefties out, but got torched vs righties. Boshers did well against both. Obviously, he needs to prove it wasn't a fluke, but IMO he deserves that chance and more importantly the Twins owe it to themselves to find out. If the Twins remove Boshere from the 40 man, he gets claimed in a heartbeat. Why not remove the flotsam and jetsom that is JR Murphy? The presence of Castro precludes him from starting. He's obviously not as good as Gimenez. Is he even as good as MItch Garver right now? If the answer is "no", as I believe it to be, why keep him? He's far less likely to be claimed and even if he is, is it really a significant loss?
