  1. I think they keep him traveling with the team in case of injury, but not on the roster.
  2. And way below par defense. If Buxton put up a 115 OPS+ over 150 games with his typical defense he’d have a bWAR in the 6 or 7 range and be on the short list for MVP.
  3. I’d say Stashak is more a lock than Graterol. I’d also say Smeltzer is more likely than Perez or Gibson, neither of whom has looked good for weeks.
  4. That this became public is going to have repercussions. It could make it harder for both teams to make trades in the future. If teams think the Giants are peddling damaged goods, teams might be reluctant to deal with them. In the same vein, if teams think the Twins are going to make a stink to deflect attention from the fact that they didn’t do their due diligence they may be reluctant to deal with Falvine.
  5. I think 12 pitchers would be enough. I guess it kinda depends on what Falvine and Baldelli come up with as a plan. A lot of us here are under the impression that two planned bullpen games (one of which is anchored by Dobnak) are a given. That may not be what they have in mind. I like the idea that has been floated about going with Odorizzi in game one, Dobnak in 2 and Berrios in front of the home crowd in 3. I think he would feed off it more than Odorizzi. Game 4 I would go with Smeltzer for one trip through the order. He pitched well against the Yankees earlier this year, but the downside of that is that the hitters have seen him. And back to Odo in a potential game 5. I don’t think you can plan out who is going to follow your “short starters” because you can’t be sure who gets used in the previous game. But, using the (expected) short starters in games 2 and 4 ensures a day off for the pen before the next game. So, my staff would be: Odorizzi Dobnak Berrios Smeltzer Rogers Duffey Romo May Littell Stashak Graterol Perez (if the decision needed to be made today - Gibson, Thorpe and Harper are the only other candidates. I STILL think not bringing up O’Rourke to see if he could be a loogy was a mistake). Smeltzer would be available for an inning in game one and Dobnak for a couple in game 5.
  6. If Perez makes the postseason roster, it won’t be to provide length. It will be as a loogy.
  7. The FO saw something they didn’t like from Dobnak. He wasn’t moved up to AAA until about Memorial Day and after just 4 appearances in AAA was sent back down until a week before the trade deadline. After 3 good starts in AAA, he came up to the MLB level. I suppose only Falvine knows why Dobnak was sent down to AA in mid June. Maybe if he stays up, he gets promoted sooner. But I don’t see who else they could have tried that they didn’t. Should they have traded for a starter? I felt pretty strongly that they should have. But they didn’t.
  8. The Twins acquired Ryan O’Rourke in August. And inexplicably didn’t add him to the roster despite not having any other loogys.
  9. It should be noted that the results of starts by Thorpe, Smeltzer and Stewart were so so to poor. And Dobnak’s results in AAA were really nothing to write home about in his first stint. To the point that he was sent down to AA after 4 appearances (though curiously after his best one). It should also be noted that just about anyone who posted an ERA under 4 for Rochester was given a good looksee at the MLB level. Point being there weren’t guys down there saying “Try me” instead of Perez.
  10. Dobnak started the year in A ball and didn’t make his MLB debut until August. That isn’t on Baldelli.
  11. The shortstop and second baseman for Gardenhire’s first 4-5 years as manager were Rivas and Guzman. I think the lack of Latin players has more to do with the Twins not paying the price required to get good ones back in the day. Plenty of Latin pitchers. Romero, Rincon, Liriano and that guy that won a couple Cy Youngs. To name just a few.
  12. I think it would be ironic if the Twins clinch the division in Detroit in front of Ron Gardenhire and Rick Anderson. Even moreso if they are both fired before the Twins leave town. While no one (including their own FO) expected the Tigers to contend, I think the Tigers are finding out that Gardenhire is not good with young players. The Tigers have 3 players with more than 400 PA. They are all at least 27. The Twins have 3 guys under 27 with more than 400 PA. I don’t know where the young Tiger prospects are, but they haven’t playing in a season where they are going to lose over 110 games.
  13. Perez is the only Twins pitcher that has loogy potential. Neither Thorpe or Smeltzer are better vs LHB. But I’m not sure that will be enough go get him on the roster. If only there was a guy that could have been used in that role...
  14. They would need a waiver for Torreyes, but he should be. I don’t think he makes the roster even if Adrianza doesn’t though. He’ll be kept around in case an infielder gets hurt.
  15. As soon as Rosario starts his maneuver to round the bag (some 10-15 feet before reaching it) the play is now BEHIND him. That’s when he should be looking at the coach. But he doesn’t. He’s looking at right field the entire time until he passes the bag and then puts his head down. Like I said earlier, I doubt he ever saw the coach.
  16. One isn’t going to know if the base coach is telling him to stop if he isn’t looking at him. It also seems to me that one is going to be able to run faster looking forward than backward.
  17. If you watch the replay, you will notice that at no time until he has committed to third does he look in the direction of the base coach. I have a big problem with that. We, as fans, are certainly within our rights to question whether the judgement of the base coach is better than the player. That is not a right the player has.
  18. I don’t think benching him helps anyone. I’m also not sure it even sends a message. This isn’t high school. He’s still getting paid. Better off just talking to him about it in private. I didn’t think the “pose” was overly long. But he does need to be smarter than making the third out at third. I’m not even sure he looked at the base coach. He kept looking behind him. THAT to me is a bigger problem with Rosario. Bad decision making. Frequently. The coach is there for a reason. If he’s waving you on and you get thrown out, that’s on him. But if you don’t even look at the coach and get thrown out, that is blatant stupidity.
  19. I was always under the impression that the silver slugger wasn’t voted on, but determined based on objective numbers.
  20. I would presume the language says that teams don’t need to be notified until MLB does so. However, I doubt there is a prohibition of a player doing so. As for leaks, that is dealt with easily enough by imposing a hefty fine if word leaks out. By hefty I’m talking 7 figures. Presumably, the player would have no reason to leak it.
  21. Well, they certainly aren’t going to tender him without considerable medical evaluation. You know: fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Pushing 32, already hurt. Good luck getting a thumbs up.
