  1. After thinking about it, perhaps Falvine did know about the failed test before the deadline and decided that without him it wasn’t worth pushing “all in”. That seems unlikely though, because that would also have required the foresight that Berrios was going to bomb out in August and that Gibson would succumb to his gastro-intestinal issues.
  2. That Graterol couldn’t get a “bum like Perez” is kinda on him isn’t it? If he can’t get him, how is he going to pitch in the playoffs?
  3. Makes one wonder when the Twins were notified of a failed test. The appeals process is typically not fast.
  4. The game with the Indians worst starter and the Twins best was supposed to be the easy one, right?
  5. There was no reason to add him to the 40 man except to use as a pinch runner in the playoffs. Unless Marwin is in worse shape than the team is letting on. Then he’s your fifth OFer, eg the reserve if someone gets hurt.
  6. If you have Ian Miller, what is Cave’s role? He isn’t going to start. He has “reverse splits” so he isn’t likely to pinch hit. He certainly isn’t going to come in for defense. Adrianza is still the best defensive shortstop on the roster and is capable in most other spots. And he hits pretty well from both sides.
  7. Ideal path: Rain out after every game so they never play two in a row so the better bullpen boys can pitch every game. Of course, they would have to play until like Thanksgiving, but hey. Whatever works.
  8. If the decision needed to be made today there is no way Berrios starts game one. Game 3 is most likely as of today.
  9. Your fifth position player would ideally be a pinch runner type. Ian Miller seems to be the preferred candidate for that role. It should also be noted that it is entirely possible that Gibson won’t be healthy enough to pitch in the playoffs, or might be limited to a relief role due to stamina issues. That would put Perez in the rotation by default and would also leave the Twins without a veteran LHP who has had success getting LHB out. If only there was a guy like that under team control...
  10. I would agree that Rogers isn’t likely to be used for more than 3 outs very often in the playoffs and that fewer than 3 is likely. As it stands now, the 4th playoff starter is between Gibson and Perez. Gibson’s condition is a factor that could give it to Perez by default and could possibly keep Gibson off the roster entirely. It doesn’t sound like that is likely, but it is possible and something Falvine should be prepared for. That could make Rogers the only LHP in the bullpen because I don’t think it is at all likely Smeltzer or Thorpe are picked. Particularly because they haven’t really shown they are especially effective vs LHB. If only there was a veteran in the organization about whom that was true...
  11. Yes, I would expect my best reliever to be available for every playoff game. And no I don’t think it would be too heavy a workload. There are never more than 3 days without at least one day off. Will I use him every game? Maybe not. But very rarely, especially recently, are games “in the bag” before both starters are out. There’s almost sure to be a key situation in which you want to use your best reliever. I also have no idea what to make of the comment I bolded. It’s contradictory. What if in the 8th inning three straight lefties hit? Or even two of three? Wouldn’t you want Rogers in then? You’re the one saying “play the matchup not the inning”. That situation is almost sure to come up at some point in literally every game after inning 5 or 6. Right now, the only other LHP to choose from are Perez, Thorpe or Smeltzer. Who are you giving the ball to?
  12. I think the player has to either accept or reject the QO within a week or so. If I’m a player that is already signed for $18 mil for 2020 why am I negotiating to make less per year? You might be able to get them to sign a deal that pays them the QO amount in year one and then less in future years. I suppose it depends on the player.
  13. OK. That might be okay for games 1&2 of the ALDS. What about games 3,4 and 5 and hopefully future series?
  14. He’s still BY FAR the best reliever the Twins have. I honestly can’t imagine a situation that he wouldn’t be ideally used in any playoff game even for just a hitter or two. Blow outs are extremely rare in the playoffs.
  15. It isn’t a “detail” at all. If Rogers is ineffective on the second day of back to back days, that’s a real problem.
  16. Actually, if they had not promoted them, their paychecks would have stopped whenever minor league players stop getting paid. They do not have fully guaranteed MLB contracts. They have split MLB/MiLB contracts.
  17. Curious why you think Arraez is well suited to hit clean up but not lead off. Seems to me that Arraez leading off with Kepler clean up makes all the sense in the world vs RHP.
  18. Maybe you are talking about other threads, but what I see in this thread is honest assessment.
  19. Let him play it somewhere else. The Twins need pitching more than they need Rosario’s bat. Rosario could fetch a very good, very close to MLB ready prospect IMO. Like, someone that can help fill one of the 4 holes in the rotation next year.
  20. Umm, yes. Even back in the minors. Way back in A ball he walked 80 times in 500 PA. At the same level, Rosario walked 30 times in a little over 400 PA. For his minor league career, Sano had a walk rate over 12%. Rosario’s was under 7%. Sure, Sano can get fooled, but he has never been a guy to swing at anything that moves like Rosario.
  21. Sano has always been a disciplined hitter. His problem last year and earlier this year was swinging and missing pitches he should have been able to crush.
  22. And look at how many teams have been looking for starting pitchers all season. I suspect many teams will change their strategy this season because pitching is do scarce.
  23. I don’t think Odorizzi or Pineda or Gibson are likely to accept a QO. They would all easily get more guaranteed money with a FA contract because of the length.
