How do you figure the Twins will have more financial flexibility this coming offseason when they had some $50 mil come “off the books” prior to this season?

Nothing about Perez’s 2019 performance suggests he would do well in the pen. The first inning is one of his poorer innings. Not the worst, but far from the best. Also, the Twins aren’t going to pay him $7.5 mil to be their second (or third if Smeltzer or Thorpe sticks in the role) lefty.

Oh, I know Kepler could do it. But given Buxton’s injury history, Kepler pretty much has to be available for the OF. Also, an earlier post suggested that it “seems like” doubles are down. The Twins are 4th in MLB with 240. They were 4th with 317 last year. Without actually doing math, the pace seems about right. Maybe slightly behind. There’s a little more than 1/4 of the season left.

I don’t believe any starting pitcher over 30 signed for more than 3 years last year. And I think only 2-3 were longer than 3 years at all, headlined by Patrick Corbin.

Well, couple options. 1) Rooker plays first. 2) Sano plays first. Not sure who would play third. I guess it would depend on who the Twins like where between Polanco, Arraez and Gordon. My guess is Arraez at third, Gordon at SS and Polanco at 2b. 3 errors in 2 days is kinda ridiculous in an era when errors are only called for egregious misplays.

If the Twins want starting pitchers next year, they are going to have to offer at least one of them (Gibson, Odorizzi, Pineda) three years.

The Twins guaranteed Pineda $10 mil without knowing if he would ever really be healthy enough to pitch at all let alone pitch well. I would guarantee $33 mil for 3 years, $500 K incentives every 10 IP starting at 150 (which he has this year) and guarantee a 4th year at $12 mil if he hits 350 IP in 2021-2022 combined.

If I’m Pineda I would be looking for something longer than 2 years and given the dearth of quality starting pitching, someone will give it to him even with his injury history. It might be rather heavily IP incentive laden or maybe it kicks up higher if he meets an IP threshold, maybe a 4th year is guaranteed with an IP threshold, but I think the last thing he would want is another short deal and to be hitting FA again at 33.

He pitched yesterday. He had already thrown 25 pitches today. He’s just off the IL. ANOTHER inning? Really??

I don’t think the Twins would have acquired O’Rourke if they didn’t plan to use him. He’ll be up before the 31st.

Because the FO failed to land a starting pitcher at the deadline, the Twins can’t afford to let Berrios miss two starts. Even with where he is now, he’s a better bet to give the team a chance to win than any of the AAA guys that have been up and down. Every game matters. The Twins can’t give two away.

Rays don’t have a real tough schedule either. 6 combined with New York and Boston at the end of the year, all at home. By then the Red Sox could possibly be eliminated and the Yankees have clinched. 3 against the Dodgers, but they will surely clinched by then. 3 in Texas, who may not be over .500 by then. They have 6 coming up against the Astros and Indians, but that’s really it. The A’s have a tough one. 6 with the Yankees, 8 with Astros, plus 4 with the Giants who are still kicking plus 6 against the Rangers. I’m not counting Boston out. They have the 3 games against the Indians on deck. Plus 7 with the Yankees and Twins, all at home. The 4 September games in Tampa loom large...

Berrios is on pace to get 8 or 9 more regular season starts, depending on whether the Twins will be able to hold him back or be forced to use him in game 162 just to get in. There are exactly 45 games remaining which theoretically means 9 more turns for every starter. Point being, even with just 8 more starts, Berrios is on pace to throw more pitches than he ever has before. Edit: My bad. 44 games left. B-R hasn’t updated standings yet. It’s worth noting that Berrios didn’t finish strong in 2018 either. He had a 4.5 ERA in August and September after being about 3.7 before that. Lots of baserunners. I would say DL him to give him the time off but that really isn’t an option.

Article says he’s planning to throw in the bullpen soon. So, he probably hasn’t set foot on a mound yet. If he comes back this year, it might be as a reliever. Which would make Cleveland extremely dangerous.

I know Kluber is close but I haven’t heard any indication that Carrasco has even stepped on a mound since being diagnosed.

Garver has the lowest outside zone swing percentage on the team. Rosario has the highest other than Astudillo. The last thing Garver is is undisciplined and I think it is extremely unfair to Garver to lump him with Rosario in that context. It is very often that the first pitch you see will be the best one. He took a whack at it. It didn’t work last night but his approach this year has clearly worked. If Baldelli would get him more at bats he might be in serious consideration for MVP.

That’s a pretty big gamble. What if he struggles so badly you have to send him down? Then you do burn that option.
