  1. If Torrez would have flown out, then there would be no complaining about Varland being pulled. 20-20 hindsight management would be wonderful but it ain't real. HOWEVER, I am an old fart and I believe that starting pitchers should last until at least the 7th inning. The current method of short starts followed by four more innings by relief pitchers boggles my mind. To do that effectively, you need ten solid relievers to make it through a season. Because the front office hasn't done a good job of bringing in solid relievers, then the current method is doomed from the beginning.
  2. I agree 100%. It seem to me that all the metrics freaks use them to rationalize their opinion of what is important. And if none of the current metrics prove their point, they create a version that does. OPS becomes OPS+. WAR becomes FWAR. The list goes on endlessly.
  3. I would be willing to bet that all the Fortune 500 companies have a large group of statisticians helping Upper Management with business plans.
  4. So as I am reading this, you agree with the data saying that facing hitter's for a third time is bad but the data sample is small. Perhaps this is a Catch-22 situation in which a manager pulls his pitcher before he gets too deep into the third iteration which, in turn, guarantees a small sample size? With the limited sample size, pulling the pitcher seems to be the most advantageous thing to do.
  5. Who'd a think that Archer and Bundy would be the most reliable arms in August and September? I would have bet some play money that both would have been released by this date.
  6. As an "unofficial" moderator for Twins Daily, I am giving you a warning for violating rule 216.8.(A).22.(d) which states "commenters must not stick to the topic of any thread after the first paragraph.". ? ?
  7. 6. Be sure to bring extra pairs of underwear for between inning changes. Making your MLB debut in Yankee stadium would scare the crap out of me.
  8. Kirilloff was just an example. Substitute any other name if you want.
  9. 82-80 is not an under .500 season unless the "new math" from the 80's changed the basics.
  10. I know what the current fall League is. No need to mansplain. My point is why send seven "top prospects" to a team where you have no control over their playing, positions, etc. when you can place 30 of them on one team over which your organization has total control of all aspects of their delopment time?
  11. I was thinking about the Arizona Fall League (hereafter referred to as AFL) and how to improve it. I don't like that only a limited number of Twins' players are allowed to participate. My conclusion is to dump the AFL and replace it with the FPL (the Fall Prospect League). The FPL would consist of two divisions (Florida and Arizona) and be based at the spring training facilities of each MLB team.. The players selected for each franchise's 30-player roster would consist of any minor leaguers (including current year draft picks) that the parent team wants to get extra playing time and major leaguers that finished the season on the 60-day IL and want to get some rehab done. The structure of each team would be in the hands of the parent club. The adding and deleting of players on the roster would be loosely monitored. For example, if Alex Kirilloff wanted to test out his surgically repaired wrist for a couple weeks, that would be acceptable. The season would run from October to mid-December and finish with a three-game championship playoff. The playoff site would be at the home field of either the Florida champion or the Arizona champion and alternate each year. That is my proposal. Now you may rip it to shreds, tell me how stupid it is, and propose something even better. ???
  12. I wonder if Mahli pitched his simulated game against the Twins starting lineup? That would have given him a false impression that he was ready to pitch in the major leagues.
  13. Two comments. 1. Thank you for adding the phonetics for Laweryson. I always wondered how it is pronounced. 2. The article begins by saying the Twins spend a lot of time, money, technology, and analytics in developing their pitching pipeline. I just wish they would add some actual physical teaching. They can analyze pitchers like Balazovic (just one example out of many) all they want but until someone actually teaches them how to pitch, they may never leave the pipeline and pitch for the Twins.
  14. Twins vs. Guardians? There's an old saying: "good pitching beats good hitting." Cleveland has good pitching but the Twins only have so-so hitting. That does not bode well for the Twins.
  15. Excellent quote. Was that wise man you? I often quote myself to make a convincing argument. I even did it in my senior paper at the University of Minnesota.
  16. Question: Wouldn't a "failed near comeback" actually be a successful comeback? A "near comeback" means a comeback that wasn't successful. Therefore (or Ergo from my high school latin), if you fail to to not be successful at a comeback, you had to have completed the comeback.
  17. Comments... Arraez: His worst month of the year was still over 10% higher than league average. Miranda: His first down month as a rookie. But what I find disturbing is that a slightly better than league average hitter is the Twins' third best for the month. Correa: Second place finish with approximately a career average month. A sad commentary on the Twins' batting woes. Gordon: Twins' MVP. And not just for August. He is the non-pitcher MVP for 2022. (Duran gets the Pitching MVP and probably the team MVP).
  18. "Closer" seems to me to be a term no longer used. I fully agree that Duran is the best choice to shut down an opponent in the late innings. But in the scenario there the middle of the opponent's lineup is coming to bat in the 8th inning, I would rather see Duran take the mound and someone else face the bottom of the order in the 9th.
  19. Arraez is good evidence that merics might be a crock of you-know-what. He still looks awfully shaky to this former first baseman.
  20. Spencer Steer just got called up by Cincinnati. Good luck, Spencer.
  21. I have a request that I have been meaning to submit but I keep forgetting to do so (I'm old dammit). The pictures at the beginning of each recap never identify the player. Could you add a name, please? Also, I have a nitpick (another thing I have been meaning to mention but forgot). In the Wind Surge recap, it says "walks from Prato and Will Holland." That makes it appear as if Prato and Holland were pitching instead of hitting. A few days ago, the phrase used was "walks from" which also sounds like it's referring to a pitcher. Although both might be technically grammatically correct, I think the phrase "walks to" provides more clarity. Regardless, the minor league recap is still my favorite article to read each day. Every morning, I always make it the last thing I read so I can end on a high note.
