  1. I have not read the above commentary yet, but I will. And I will probably disagree with a lot of it. I just want to say I appreciate coming to the blog and willing to speak your mind and think out your thoughts without resorting to quick and easy mud slinging in the other thread.
  2. That’s about three months of games, not even the length of an Air Force deployment... (joke)
  3. “On the morning of September 7, 2018, 81 days after Joe had left the zoo, he went to a local hospital to apply for a third job. It was a sunny Florida day—there was dew on the grass; the temperature was just right. Joe parked near the hospital and stepped down from his blue Ford F-150 with his résumé in hand...” He wanted to start a career in health care! Just think, if not for those meddling kids, Joe could be helping fight the coronavirus right now...
  4. Empty stadium baseball would seem preferable to all parties than no baseball.
  5. Turns out I watch a game here and there, but my television isn't loyal to Fox Sports North during the baseball season Somehow I got all the A answers correct, but only one other in addition to that.
  6. Obviously the deal with the Red Sox was better, but getting Maeda is the key. Dollar for dollar a very good deal for the Twins, in my opinion.
  7. Early on, I took a look and the first or second thing I saw was Marwin batting, in a fairly quiet stadium, I think it was Tanner Roark pitching, and right before the pitch *BANG*BANG* for curve ball. Marwin actually struck out on that pitch but it was clear as day. Didn't want to post anything when I first saw that but very, very unfortunate how implicated he seems to be in this.
  8. The answer for Mike Parker is: none of the above. The answer for Mike Parker is to rip open that plastic wrapped, powder-blue promotional jersey he picked up at a Twins event 14 years ago, and has been sitting on his closet shelf since then. He almost opened it and wore it to Gluek’s for the 2017 Wild Card game, but for some reason he held back. He’s been holding back for a reason, but he didn’t know what. And now, with the Donaldson signing and a World Series in his sights, there will never be a better time. This is Mike Parker’s moment. But does the powder blue plastic-wrapped jersey have a name and number on the back of it? That would be embarrassing if not. Parker, on many occasions, has his dug fingers carefully into the plastic without opening the wrapping in an attempt to separate the folds of the jersey and see just enough if there’s a name and number lettered across the back. Lettering or no, I nevertheless think it’s a chance Parker has to take, and now is the time. Open the plastic, put on the jersey, and go. Also, I am Mike Parker.
  9. Also, some would say Garver was thrust into full time duty in 2018 before he was ready, after Castro stopped playing on his injured knee.
  10. Couple of highlights from a KFAN interview with Tim Tschida this afternoon: 1) Sign stealing—beyond just the runner on second base watching for the catcher to put down ones or twos—goes back a long time; 2) Teams policed this themselves without outside help, and sign stealing was the cause of lots of the beanballs, brushback pitches, and onfield brawls that occurred when it wasn’t otherwise apparent what was going on; 3) Tschida thinks MLB should indeed take back those Astros World Series rings. Another poster somewhere alluded to those rings as being the most important possession those players have, and Tschida kind of confirmed that. Even removing the Astros as 2017 champions should be up for discussion. 4) the technology is so good and so pervasive that a sign steal scandal like this is bound to happen again.
  11. Yep, I will now expect that if the Twins fall out of contention in any given year (or mistakenly think they are out of contention like in 2017 or 2018), there will be a sell-off of major league players.
  12. or... Jim Pohlad went to the new Star Wars movie tonight, and doesn’t know about this yet...
  13. I went back and looked at the thread Vanimal linked to in November when this came out. http://twinsdaily.com/topic/35518-astros-being-investigated-for-using-tech-to-steal-pitching-signs/?p=935074 I will backtrack my earlier statements. The banging was almost instantaneous after the catcher put the sign down. I would still like to know how common this was, and what signals they used in what games. Anyway here was that tweet (warning: language) https://twitter.com/Jomboy_/status/1194348775965437952?s=19
  14. I know there are one or two video clips floating around of banging on trash can lids. I’ve got to think there was more to it than that, or we would have dozens of clips. That particular sound would be pretty obvious and I think people would catch on pretty quickly. But you are right, it could still be an audio signal that hasn’t been revealed yet.
  15. While agreeing with all of the above, I also can’t help thinking that if pitchers weren’t taking so much time to deliver the pitch, this type of cheating would be minimal. I don’t know, let’s see what turns up. Knowing what pitch is coming is huge, but I doubt batters would have much time to look away from the pitcher, decode the signal, and then bring their eyes back to the pitcher’s delivery slot before the pitch comes. And that’s the last step in the process. Illegal sign stealing like this... I think it would work only under the right conditions.
  16. Personally, I’ve always hated that sort of penalty. That’s really a dig at the fans, in my opinion, who don’t deserve it.
  17. I have no idea how the Twins evaluated Ryu or the other 2-3 decent guys they had a realistic shot at. But factoring in everything else, I think the Twins needed pitching worse than any other team, and therefore should have been willing to pay more for it.
  18. Wheeler could have been recruited here. He was not predestined for Philly in any way, shape or form. Offer him 10% more than the highest offer and an ironclad promise that Twins fans won’t throw glass beer bottles at your fiancée if you don’t make it through five innings. Bumgarner got 5/80. Offer him 4/80, maybe even slightly front loaded, plus a player opt out after two years so he can bargain with Arizona. Ryu, dunno. Same offer, earlier in the free agency period, maybe that gets it done if you buy the thought that his price was driven up from being the last best remaining free agent pitcher. Thoughts?
  19. To be honest, I don’t think we’ll see another Mauer type contract (8/184), and I’m okay with that. The trend for the Twins is for fewer years and I’m okay with that. Fewer years but a 23/year value shouldn’t be unacceptable, however.
