  1. I got hooked back in 1967 when our family was camping in Northern Minnesota. It was late at night and all were asleep except me and my Mom as we were listening to the Twins in extra innings on her little transistor radio on low volume. Then it happened, Harmon (Killer) Killebrew hit a walkoff home run and both my Mom and myself screeched with joy. I think we may have awoken my brother and Dad but we didn't care. There have been lots of games where they just petered out and lost and I'd quietly go to sleep. But it's those games where they excite us that keeps all of us hooked.
  2. I have to apologize Ted but I am not understanding what "decision" Polanco needs to make here. You said that he needs 550 plate appearances for the next phase of his contract to trigger. How is that a decision? He either makes that threshold and it triggers or he does not and it does not trigger. Now, here is where my novice thinking comes in. If he does NOT trigger the next phase, what happens? Is he a FA? Does he automatically get released? Wouldn't the Twins still have control of the decision to keep him or not? Please help clarify for me. Thanks.
  3. Lots of comments regarding Buck's health and not playing enough games. Well, he is what he is and he is being compensated according to his games played and impact to the team. I say, let's stop complaining about Buck and appreciate what he brings for the games that he does play I still say, good value for the team and he is paid appropriately. Lastly, for those that criticize the FO, you have to admit that they signed him to a good deal for the team. He may have a season or two where he's injured much of the time and only gets his base pay, but he may also have a season or two of MVP quality where he gets super star pay. It will all even out in the end.
  4. I'll go with 2 for the Twins, 2 Stanley Cups for the Wild, and 1 SB for the Vikes. The T-Wolves don't deserve one for how that franchise is run.
  5. Maybe their strategy is to sign back end rotation guys each year to hold the prospects back to delay their FA thus allowing the Twins to utilize their prime years at low pay. They did this with Garver to a degree.
  6. It'd be interesting to know if Nick Paparesta is handling him any different this year that he has been handled in the past. If so, then I would at least be encouraged that they are trying something different to keep him healthy. If not, then same old same old.
  7. In regards to values, I think Kirilloff and Larnach are low due to their injuries. Kepler is low due to his performance so these are accurate. Wallner is about right. As for trades, I like keeping potential with lots of control years remaining. Therefore, I'd be for trading Kepler first as his value will probably not improve unless they feel he will take a jump with the shift changes. I would not trade Kirilloff or Larnach and am open to trading Wallner. Let's let Kirilloff and Larnach regain their value this year, assuming they are healthy, and then revisit them at the deadline.
  8. Pro: We may learn to play up to stronger competition which can only help during those years that we make the playoffs. Con: We may lose rivalries not seeing teams in our divisions as much and the fans may not be as interested due to lesser known opponent players. Either way, it should be interesting.
  9. Nicely framed Hans. I think you made several good points. I've been struggling with identifying the "process" and "strategy" that this FO uses. Each time I think that I have it figured out, they turn around and do something (e.g. Joey G) that blows me away.
  10. I like him but we need to decide whether we are going with Lewis/Lee and Farmer in the interim or assuming Lewis/Lee play elsewhere and Farmer is our super utility and trade for Kim. I'd say no to the latter and run with the former, but if the Twins trade for him maybe we give up Martin.
  11. Is there some new batting glove invention this season to ensure that they do not loosen between pitches that I am unaware of?
  12. It would be interesting to know how many years it took for Cleveland to build up that pipeline. I hate criticizing the FO without knowing the answer to that question. Maybe the breakout year is still 2 years down the road.
  13. Agreed. Ownership loves this FO and they will be given another year regardless of what transpires in 2023.
  14. The Twins need to decide if they can absorb this glut of outfielders on their 25 man (or is it 26 this year?) roster. Seems like too many fielders given how they like to keep 13 pitchers and not enough with options or if they have options, should not be in the minors. Someone or two has to go. I suspect a trade for pitching is coming and if Larnach will garner more than Kepler then he may be the odd man out. I personally favor the younger given their controllable years, but with injuriy history and potential trade value I could see the Twins going either way on a trade.
  15. I really like him and feel that if he gets at-bats and outfield work he will be a good OF. I especially like his ability to hit doubles as that seemed to be happening for him before he got injured. Don't they usually say that a player needs about 1K at-bats to see what they really are. He just needs more time.
  16. So the Twins tried to get David Ortiz to hit to all fields and he excels with the Red Sox hitting for power. Did the Twins take Larnach who had line-drive potential and try to turn him into a home run hitter? One would think that the franchise learned its lesson!
  17. I cannot see the team keeping both Gallo and Kepler. I guess they could put Gallo in LF but hey, what about all the other outfielders that should be at the MLB level? Since they cannot trade Gallo, I strongly believe that they will trade Kepler. I agree with other posts though that we should not just give him away for a bag of balls.
  18. The union always has high priced veterans involved in the negotiation process and they always favor themselves so we get league contracts that favor the huge player contracts for the few and a good portion of players get little to nothing. Have you noticed how many players who still have a few years left do not get signed or get signed for peanuts. I think they are getting squeezed out in favor of the few super stars and the younger guys who make less because they have not hit FA. Whatever the next contract does, it should equal out the pay so that all players are fairly compensated.
  19. I agree. Let's be done complaining about FA's and start thinking about being excited about trades. We know for a fact that at least one is coming since there is no way they keep Kepler since he is redundant of Joey G. I think that there will much more on the trade front to get excited about soon.
  20. Yeah, I'm confident that even these big spending teams do not want to pay the freight if an insurance company does not. I suspect that how far in $ and years that insurance companies will go is what is holding this up.
  21. They may not be necessarily confident in the pitching pipeline if they extend one or two of those hitting FA after this year. I suspect that the FO would be more comfortable in extending a known commodity than bringing in Eovaldi who is somewhat of an unknown commodity.
  22. Two more points... 1. The Twins owners pony up an average size payroll for a mid-size market. Several teams have much smaller payrolls and end up with a record just as good or better than the Twins. So for me this comes down to how well the money is spent and how well we groom our prospects which focuses on the FO not the owner. 2. You should be thrilled that ownership spends what they do. Calvin was the cheapest owner there ever was. He lost Blyleven, Carew and several other of our stars for practically nothing (even in those days). Those teams had to work much harder to win than today's team.
  23. I'd like to see players get into the HOF based on baseball statistics only. Come up with pitching and hitting metrics that all can agree on and use them exclusively. If a player had a small number of great years (sorry Puck or Tony O), or many mediocre years (sorry Kitty), then they do not deserve to be in the HOF. That may also rule out those who had a lot of championships who just happened to be on good teams but their individual stats did not show they deserved to be in. Maybe for those folks, create a separate wing to identify lengthy good careers or a small number of great years. For those with character issues, put an asterisk on the bottom of their plaque to identify steroids, cheating (e.g. Rose), etc. so people can see that and make their own judgements.
  24. It will be interesting to see where this time of haves and have nots ends up. I hope baseball responds appropriately, but given that they introduced differing baseballs to different teams I am not confident that they will.
