I would rank the moves the Twins made to be the most impactful this season. That said, were they enough to match up with the what the Guardians have from last year plus a few additions?. IMO No, but time will tell. I pick the Twins second in the ALC behind the Guardians. I'll be delighted to be incorrect.

I like a lot of things that I am hearing... speeding the game up, possibly opening up blackouts so we can see our home teams on MLB network if/when BSN goes under, and now the possibility of ownership agreeing on some form of revenue sharing. Things are definitely looking up for MLB. They will come Ray, they most definitely will come!

Balazovic Breaks Jaw in Off Field Altercation
Bigfork Twins Guy replied to Vanimal46's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Not a good way to start ST for our team. If this is from a bad decision on his part, and I'm not saying that it is, maybe Justin Morneau should have a talk with him like Gardy did with him. It sure worked for Morneau. I hope Jordy comes back strong and proves he is the ballplayer that we all know he can be. He should not give up on himself nor should the Twins give up on him. -
Looking forward to the 2023 season
Bigfork Twins Guy replied to Squirrel's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I had a tough time choosing between solid pitching w/o the Happ's and Shoemaker's vs a healthy Kirilloff/Larnach but I had to go with the former as it is the first time in what seems like forever where I will feel like we can win with whatever starting pitcher is on the mound. That my friend is refreshing. -
Is This Where Byron Buxton’s Injuries End?
Bigfork Twins Guy replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm going with the glass half full theory and estimating that Buck will play in 130 games this year and be healthy for the most part. I think he will channel the positives of Paul Monitor's career path and be healthy for the second half of his career. -
We did not trade for Mahle and Jorge Lopez for only 2022. You can say it was a bad trade for last season but we still have them for this season. You can complain that Gallo is a bad contract and hitter (I'll give you some of that) and is worse than Cave, Celestineo, Garlick, etc. but what we did last year with the AAAA OF talent sure did not work nor inspire me when they came up with RISP. It was time to try something new. Lastly, I think many of you are looking at the lineup only and not taking into account the defense that we added. DRS can immensely improve outcomes of games. Let's see what we have before tanking the season based only on hitting.

I'm happy to finally see the off season end and ST start. I think that the FO did an admirable job putting together the 2023 team while not negatively impacting future years. Let's PLAY BALL!

The two I will be watching most closely is Mahle, primarily due to the fact that nobody has said what exactly was causing his shoulder issue nor what, if anything, they have done to repair it. The second one is AK because it was a rare procedure, he has had multiple issues with the wrist, and FB is key to how the infield and outfield musical chairs are arranged. My hope is that all the previously injured players get past their injuries and they all have a good year of development while playing entertaining baseball.

Rumor: Twins interested in Brad Hand?
Bigfork Twins Guy replied to Squirrel's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I advocated for picking up Hand in another thread, but after revisiting his numbers and estimates of what amount of $ he would want on a MLB contract, I'd have to say no to this. If he accepts a 1-year minor league deal for 2mm or so, it may be worth the risk. -
The Twins Have Their Own Adam Thielen
Bigfork Twins Guy replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Congrats to Caleb on a nice career and for working diligently to accomplish it. That said, I'd still prefer that the FO pick up a LH reliever just in case he is headed down the back side of his performance curve. -
How Good is the Twins' Infield Defense?
Bigfork Twins Guy replied to Hunter McCall's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Well, we need hitting infielders if we are to compensate for the limited offense of our defensive outfielders. The best idea is to get more balanced offense/defensive infielders. I believe we have one coming in Lewis and maybe down the road Lee will be able to provide both offense and good defense. The more of those type of players we can compile, the better off we will be. That said, they do not come cheap in FA nor in draft capital.- 31 replies

I like the approach of building up our defense to help the pitching staff. That the OF components match up nicely with an attribute that our pitchers have is all the better. Heck, we tried bomba and other approaches and they've not worked. Why not try this approach. I see lots of low scoring games coming our way this year.

The Twins Forgotten Stud Pitcher
Bigfork Twins Guy replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
We're in kind of a no-win situation with him. If he comes out of the gate healthy and has a good first half, then his agent will probably want him to finish out the year and go into FA for a big contract. If he still has shoulder injuries this year and is not effective, then we probably will not give a QO and it would not make sense for the Twins to sign him long-term and we will have gotten little value for the prospects we sent for him. The only path if he excels is to offer him a fair in-season contract. If he and his agent decline, the we must shop him at the deadline to recoup some of our prospect capital.- 19 replies

I agree with your starting rotation battle Cody. I also agree that baring any last minute trades or pick ups for a RH bat, they have to have Garlic on the bench to address the need against LH pitching. As for the BP battle, having the options available does provide flexibility for STP-MLPS shifting. I still would like them to bring in one more RP as we could be exposed while waiting for one of the starting prospects to be competent in the BP role.

I still think they are a little short in the BP and that they may be counting on the stars to align here. It's nice to try to save money by getting prospect starting pitchers in the pen, but that usually takes a few years, e.g. May, Rogers, Theilbar, etc. Also, we can't expect the good health in the BP like last year to continue. I felt ill seeing what we gave up to Baltimore for Lopez at the trade deadline. I think BP pieces are much cheaper via FA this time of year. We still have Brad Hand out there and worst case he would push a prospect like Winder or Moran to St. Paul. If he can't produce, then release him and bring up the prospect.

Sorry to hear that you got scooped Seth, but I liked your version better. My take is that the Twins have made in roads with Boras and that is a good thing. A lot of people do not like Boras, but I believe that he and our FO have always been very honest with each other and if you ask anybody who does negotiations, they'll always tell you that they enjoy negotiating with honest people. Keep nurturing that relationship with Boras and more good will come from it.

Yes, first base offense is important this year to replace Arraez's production loss and the hope is the Kirilloff can come through. If he cannot, then I think the Twins have the flexibility to adjust to that with the acquisitions of Vasquez, Farmer and Gallo. Hopefully we do not need to go that route except during normal rotations for occasional days off, but it's nice to know we can do that if need be.

The Twins Built Consistency this Offseason
Bigfork Twins Guy replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The FO has added quality depth this off-season. By adding Lopez, it jacked down much of the rotation one slot. Signing Correa allows Farmer to be a quality super sub. By bringing in Gallo (although I was not a fan), they added OF depth to avoid what happened last year with all those AAAA guys manning those positions daily. I'm excited to see where this quality and depth leads us this season. It should be fun.- 20 replies

Realistic Goals for Twins Pitchers in 2023
Bigfork Twins Guy commented on Harrison Smith's blog entry in Harrison Smith’s Blog
This list and set of goals are encouraging. Had this exercise been done two or three years ago it would have been putrid. I am liking what I see of our pitching staff and expectations. This blew me away and if you had asked me I would have thought that the Guardians would have a higher ranking than the Twins. -
Not quite an advantage as we will now be playing a more balanced schedule, but I get your point. There should be improvement in his home field stats.

It’s a Make Or Break Year for Jorge Polanco
Bigfork Twins Guy replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I do not think this is a make or break year for Polanco. He is one of our most patient hitters as he consistently works counts forcing pitchers to throw him hitable pitches while increasing their pitching counts. After losing Arreaz, we need him in this capacity. Being a switch hitter also helps keep our lineup from being too left-handed. I really like Polanco and the MLB network analysts agree as I noticed he was around 5-7 in their top ten second basemen ratings. We have the luxury of having several replacement candidates that are not quite ready to replace him. Let's give them some more time to develop while harnessing Polanco's contributions for this year. If they can no longer be held back, we can trade Polanco at the next deadline or at season end for prospects. If this happens, I for one will be sad to see him go just like I was for Arreaz, but excited to see his replacement.- 32 replies

One "Moore" Bullpen Piece for Minnesota

One "Moore" Bullpen Piece for Minnesota
Bigfork Twins Guy replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I have concerns regarding acquiring a RP at the deadline. Just look at what we gave up at last year's deadline for Lopez. It would be cheaper prospect-wise to grab a FA RP once we move the long-term injured players to the 60-man to clear up a few spots on the 40-man. I suspect other teams have the same strategy so the FO should be coming to terms now with FA RP's so we are ready to pull the trigger.- 42 replies
