  1. There is something sacrosanct about getting in on the first ballot for the BBWA members. Not sure why, but they seem to want to reserve it for true no doubters. I think Joe will get into the HOF but not on the first ballot. If his catching career would have continued, he would for sure have been a first ballot candidate. Given his concussion issues and subsequent move to FB, his HOF credentials (i.e. numbers) have moved from the no brainer category to the good but not first ballot good.
  2. My thoughts exactly. Maybe the FO does ready TD!!!
  3. Add in CC4 on the infield and the pitchers should have good defensive quality this year.
  4. I agree with your analysis on this strategy Nick. It will be interesting to see if the Twins retain any of these cost-controlled acquisitions long-term or whether they constantly recycle in new trade acquisitions. I suspect that they acquired these primarily to hold down the fort until that pipeline develops, but if they hit on one or two of these acquisitions they may decide to extend them.
  5. The lineup reminds me some of the pitching staff. Other than Buck and CC4, we have no stars, only mid-level players (i.e. 2-5 level pitchers). I just hope we have enough 25-man slots to house all the ones that we do not have options on.
  6. Agreed, we need BP help at this point. They do need to watch the 40-man though so that they do not have to release someone of value when adding. I like Chafin and Hand as BP options.
  7. Even if a front-line ace was available, Lewis would not be enough to get him. I think the Twins strategy is to develop their own ace or trade for a middle of rotation pitcher (e.g. Mahle, Lopez, etc.) and develop them into aces. We will not be acquiring an already established ace IMO. I like Lewis and say we keep him. As others have stated, his value is low right now. Let's see what we have when he comes back.
  8. Given that the Twins starting pitching pipeline is not yet ready to contribute in a big way to the rotation, and the fact that we have hitters on the cusp of being major leaguers, trading a big bat for a starting pitcher was the best approach. Also getting two hitting prospects in return replaces the hitting we lost in Luis albeit a few years delayed.
  9. Nice job FO getting value here. We all will miss Luis and his AB's but as I mentioned in another thread, the FO needed to take emotion out of this trade and they did that. That said, although the hard core fans understand this trade, the casual fans who come to the park to watch Luis bat will be furious. I suspect that the gate revenue will suffer for the beginning of the season.
  10. I agree, mostly since I have been promoting improved defensive fundamentals. Putting an infielder (e.g. Arreaz, Sano, etc.) in the outfield is not a good idea for improving their OF defense IMHO. Keep him in the infield or DH to keep his RH bat in the lineup.
  11. Great take Nick. I agree with many of the comments here and have always been proud of my "fly over country" roots and the integrity we, and our FO, have up here. I also like the comments about Boras. I too have noticed him warming up to our FO and that can be a good thing for the future of FA signings. Not sure but I think he may represent Lewis and possibly AK and if so, that may help in the future.
  12. I like Rocco personally and like how he interacts with his players and staff. I do think that he goes 100% analytics and 0% gut feel but I also believe that is the FO's method and he is told not to deviate from it. So this I do not blame on Rocco. My ONLY complaint is that he and his staff are NOT teaching fundamentals and obviously not practicing them in ST. Everybody on this team MUST learn how to bunt, throw to the correct cutoff, and hit behind the runners. They also need practice in reading whether or not to advance to the next base. I love the Twins but puke when I watch these mistakes which previous managers (i.e. Kelly and Gardy) always corrected and NEVER tolerated.
  13. I liked what we saw from him in limited action last season and I like this as a low-risk gamble on his future. It is similar to Dobnak in that the cost is low so if it fails, not much lost.
  14. Maybe they use the high lottery draft pick in this year's draft to get our catcher of the future. Then the 3-year bandaid plus Jeffers can get us to when he is ready.
  15. Go for a RH-hitting fielder that can help THIS YEAR, not a lotto ticket unless you can afford to do both.
  16. The biggest problem that the Twins had last year, other than injuries, was hitting with men on base. This is what Luis excels at. I absolutely love watching this man take at-bats. He works counts and gives pitchers headaches. I thought he played an excellent first base last year and the metrics show that. I know he does not align with what teams feel a first baseman should be, hitting-wise, but we can make up for that power in other areas like the OF and 3B and with our SS. I also don't understand the bad knees talk. I have never heard Twins management or medical personnel mention bad knees, nor do I ever recall him not playing and bad knees being the reason. Please correct me if I am mistaken here. With all that said, if a fair deal presents itself then the FO must pull the trigger even though fans will be upset. As a FO, you have to take emotion out of it and do what is right for the club. If they trade Luis, I for one will be sad because I will miss his at-bats, but will understand the logic.
  17. I fully expect more moves, but at this point I’d consider the following… - Correa obviously a push since we had him last season. - Vasquez a plus over Sanchez. - Farmer a push with the loss of Gio Urshela. Therefore, slight improvement
  18. I wonder if the Mets process and decision-making had to do with the GM’s difference of opinion regarding Correa on Cohen’s rather hasty agreement on a fully guaranteed contract.
  19. Have heard lots of people saying we need a RH corner OF bat. Now that Correa is signed Farmer can handle some time out there in addition being an emergency catcher. We also can bring up Garlic if needed. Lastly, Lewis can be our RH OF guy once he comes up. Let’s not be so ready to jettison our OF talent just yet.
  20. Chafin. Thielbar may start going downhill given his age and Jovani seems injury prone. Hand may also be a LH option.
  21. A big no. If that money is really burning a hole in the Twins pocket then lock up a few current players into their FA years.
  22. The Twins will run into the same issues as the Mets regarding insurance coverage. It would have to be a different insurance company than the Mets and have differing actuarial tables that would allow us to offer different years/amounts than the Mets. Otherwise, this comes down to his choice of teams/locations.
  23. This one tugged at my heart strings JB. Good to have those conversations with those who have gone before us. I'm absolutely sure he is listening.
