I think that the biggest component to base running next year will be the limit on the number of times that the pitcher can throw to first base. Once they exhaust that limit, the base runner can take a much larger lead and only has to worry about the catcher picking them off after the pitch. Those larger leads, along with the larger bases, will cause more stolen bases next year IMO.

This would be a good idea especially if stolen base attempts pick up. My only caution to the FO is that at 32 years of age, he may not last more than a year or two behind the plate. If they sign him, make the duration no more than 4-years and develop plans of where to play him (probably DH) those last few years when the wear and tear on his body catches up with him.

Time to move Buxton out of CF?

On the flip side, left and right field have two walls for him to run into where center only has one. -
Ohtani Contract, what would it look like?
Bigfork Twins Guy replied to Trov's topic in Other Baseball
I also like the incentive laden contract to protect against paying too much AAV during the one way player if that should occur. -
Interesting take Doc. I think that the Twins win either way. If they sign CC4, then they are locked in at that position and it should be relatively painless with cheaper younger players in play for multiple years to come. I would just hope that we do not lose a super star player because we cannot afford him when FA hits so the FO needs to think that through.. The other way, if the Twins do not sign CC4, is also OK as we have young guns in queue which means we can spend on pitching (I'm hoping for a few BP studs). Either way we will be fine.

Which Padres Pitcher Joins Minnesota Next?
Bigfork Twins Guy replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
A solid NO on these options. As stated in this thread, there are better FA options available. That said, since these are 1-year options I suspect that the Twins would have interest since that is their MO.- 11 replies

Our pitchers do not go the third time through the order because they are not good enough to do that. Ohtani is one of the few aces who can get further into the game as he showed when the Twins played the Angels this year. I would entertain signing him ONLY if we can extend him. I agree, he is not worth what we would have to give up for a one-year rental. What he is is a player that would entice fans to come to the ballpark every day that he is in the lineup. The increased fan interest and revenue may alone be enough for the Twins to have sincere consideration. Just retain at least one prospect shortstop and sign a stop gap until he is ready.

Rumor: Dodgers Interested in Carlos Correa
Bigfork Twins Guy replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
The good thing about possibly having to move Correa to third base eventually is that he definitely has the arm to man that position. Signing him leaves open the possibility of third base IF, for some reason, he does decline at SS. -
The only way that they will pay for an ace is if they develop one who stays healthy and that they have confidence in. Barrieos fit the healthy card but I do not think that they felt he could ever achieve ace status. The item holding them back from acquiring a FA ace is length of contract. This is primarily how they lost out on Darvish, Wheeler and Morton as they were competitive on AAV. I get their logic to a degree as once an ace hits FA much of their value has already been provided to their previous team and with the length and cost of these long term contracts the risk is just too high for this FO and owner. The only way they get a true ace is to develop a healthy one and sign them long-term so the odds are not real high that they ever get a true ace.

Joe Ryan Has Another Level
Bigfork Twins Guy replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I like everything about Joe Ryan. I do have concerns that eventually batters will figure out his fastball and with the lack of high velocity it may start to get hit. Hence, I fully agree that he needs to focus on his off speed pitches. I would love to see him incorporate a change up as with the FB and off speed pitches it could be devastating for hitters especially if used less frequently. -
Twins Trade Candidate: Max Kepler
Bigfork Twins Guy replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Trade him. We've got several MLB ready replacements and have given him all the chances in the world to overcome his hitting deficiencies. I do admit that he tried to hit to the left side beating the shift early last year but then seemed to give up mid-season. He just does not adjust hitting-wise and I am not confident that he ever will. I've also heard on G&G podcasts that the shift will not greatly improve his hitting results. -
When the trade first occurred I gave it a D because I felt that Donaldson would hit and field better than Urshella and I thought Sanchez was a butcher defensively and was all or nothing at the plate like Sano. Urshella surprised me with some outstanding defense and a good hitting line, better at both than Donaldson at a far lesser price. Sanchez also surprised me with his defense although poor compared to Rortvet. I'm sure he worked hard during the off season knowing this was his walk year. And as Rosterman says, Henriquez is icing on the cake. I now give this trade A- to B+.

Wait for the kids to develop. We have enough in the pipeline that one or two of them should develop into something better than Sonny Gray. Once they do, then sign them to long term contracts.

One item I think always gets overlooked when looking at payroll. The team was purchased for like 30 million and has increased in value to what, 1.5 billion? I get that the increase in value in some part is due to inflation but that is a large increase nevertheless. I think owners need to take this into account when they look at payroll and want to make money EVERY year. I equate it to buying a house at say 100k, then investing 30k in improvements over many years and then selling it for 275k.

Not a bad idea. I doubt Correa will sign for 5 years and maybe not even 7 since he is younger. This idea works if we can get him for 5 or less years AND forsee a spot for him for the last 3 years of that contract. Keep in mind that we sure could have used his hitting this year when we left all of those left on base.

Tough decision for the FO on this topic. As we all know, the real value for teams is getting the best of players before they hit FA. Once you pay big for a FA, you are in essence paying for the performance that they gave their past team as by the time they hit FA, skills can start declining. Look at this case with Correa and the Astros kid SS. They got all that WPA from CC and when the price got big they went to their next kid SS and now are getting performance for peanuts. I like CC4, and wish the Twins would up their payroll and get some more veteran talent, but there is a fine line there between too much payroll for declining talent and too little payroll for inexperienced talent. The FO need to find that balance and pick and choose correctly.

Very informative article comparing two organizations apples to apples. The article highlights the similarities but also discusses the differences in philosophies. When watching the playoffs this year it is even more evident how far we really are from competing in the playoffs. The Padres drew 2.9 million fans in the 2022 regular season, from a metro population of 1.5 million. The Twins drew 1.8 million fans, from a metro population of 3.7 million IMO the above is the most important difference highlighted in the post. I heard some complaints from management about a dwindling attendance this year for the Twins, but look at SD who put a quality team on the field. Their fans have been noticed and passionate during these playoffs. We do not need to go all-in towards the super high risk model, but definitely need to take a step up. I'd say increasing the payroll to 150-175MM would be a good start.
-
The simple answer to your question is YES, it's always better to sign the player you know than one you do not know and have not seen close up. IF they do sign CC4, then I'd prefer a front-end loaded contract with less on the back end. That would be fair to both parties related to his contribution assuming that he digresses. It also would reduce/eliminate the fan yelling at the end of the contract like what happened with Joe Mauer.

I like this idea a lot as it solves our temporary short stop issue while also solving our catching issue for what may be a reasonable price. The other thing that I like about this option is that if one or more of our in-house options are ready by mid-season, then we have the option of trading IFK to recoup some of the prospects that we gave the Yankees.
-
Hopefully with the stable of young starting pitchers that got MLB innings this year and those coming off the injured list we can avoid signing veterans off of the scrap heap this year and actually move towards a quality starting rotation with some depth.

FA or trade either way we need another catcher. I do not care for Sanchez as I think he strikes out too much and although better this year, is not the defensive catcher that we need. Get a good defensive catcher, LH preferred, via FA or trade that needs to be equal to or better than Jeffers and let them platoon based on that day's pitcher.

Twins Trade Candidate: Gio Urshela
Bigfork Twins Guy replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I like Gio and thought his defense was better than the metrics suggested. I wouldn't mind keeping him as long as he does not block any of our younger players as I do not see him as the long-term option especially with his cost rising next year before FA. If you can package him for some pitching or a power hitting corner outfield player then I would be OK with doing that. Just make sure you do not give him away as he has value.- 35 replies
