Article: Twins Arbitration Notes
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The team and player/agent both submit their number to the league without knowing what the other is offering, correct? Have you ever heard of a situation, Seth, where the player's request was less than the team's offer? If so, do you know what the result was?- 17 replies

Article: The Time For A Buxton Extension Is Now
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
You just made a great case for why it makes sense to trade Sano as soon as trading him makes sense. Unfortunately, with the injury and his off field problem it is going to be July at the earliest that the Twins may be able to get fair value. -
Article: The Time For A Buxton Extension Is Now
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I read somewhere a few weeks ago that the Twins weren't going to be extending anyone this winter. Rather, they were waiting until spring training to do so. Put me in the extend him this year camp, with at least a couple extra years beyond arbitration. -
Article: Hey Joe, What's Next?
rdehring replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Although a two year contract may be possible, I see him and the Twins at the point of doing one year contracts moving forward. I agree that $10mm may be a bit high, but for 2019 I see $5mm as too low. Expect something more in the $7mm-$8mm range. How long does he last? I think its realistic to see him play two or maybe even three years beyond 2018. -
Article: Three Prospects To Watch In 2018
rdehring replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Blyleven and his curve ball made his debut as an 18 year old. OK, that was a different time. But is it unreasonable to believe that Enlow could rocket thru the system next year all the way to AA. He could then begin 2019 in AA before moving up to AAA and the Twins in August, 2019. I can dream, can't I? -
Article: Three Prospects To Watch In 2018
rdehring replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I began following Thorpe when he was pitching winter ball back home in Australia. I think it was the winter of 2013, but could have been the following year. He was one of the top two pitchers in the league, facing teams with a mix of single A players to a few who had a cup of coffee. His numbers were obscene. Will continue following him this year with the expectation that he moves up to Rochester late in the year. Expect the reason he won't get a September call up is that he will be out of innings after not pitching in 2015-2016. The other player I want to see fly like an eagle thru the system is Enlow. Can't win without top level pitching. The only way we are going to get a deep rotation is thru the draft and development. Would you like to be a Twins scout in Louisiana? Enlow, Bechtold and Pearson all turned pro rather than honor their commitment to LSU last year. Expect there is a bounty on Twins scouts in Baton Rouge. -
And you may have missed the best prospect of the entire group, Lewis Thorpe, although he probably won't make it to the Twin Cities until sometime in 2019.

Count me amongst those who don't think as highly of Gordon. My other concern is with Mejia. The defensive part of his game is a liability. He has a real problem covering first base. He is a big man and appears to lack the conditioning needed to do what a pitcher must do defensively. Add that to his inability to pitch beyond the 5th inning and I see a pitcher who I doubt will be in the major leagues very long. Hopefully, both improve and prove me wrong.

I don't understand people talking about a rebuild. Five of our eight every day starters are young, very young. The core of a team is in place for a long time. Yes, we need to add some parts around it, but starting a rebuild just doesn't make sense.

Am I the only one, or are others also real uneasy with giving Darvish lots of years and dollars? I probably shouldn't form an opinion based on a couple games in the World Series, but he really was awful. Hopefully, there was something ailing him and they know why he wasn't at least competitive. I would prefer they go with someone like Cobb or Lynn, who I view as Plan B candidates.

My question, Nick, is what happened to Duffey's curve? I recall watching him pitch when he was first called up. It appeared he had two different curves, the 12-to-6 and another at a different angle. He could throw either for a strike or have it drop off a ledge. I didn't see that curve last year. If he can get that pitch back together with a better fast ball, he can be a top pitcher...long relief, set-up, closer or starter. Do you agree that he lost the effectiveness of his curve? Or is my memory of 2016 failing me?

Article: Twins Daily's Long-Term Future And Writers
rdehring replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Personally, John, I value this site strictly because of the Twins. I have zero interest in reading about the Vikings, Wild or Timberwolves. In part because I have little interest in a couple of those sports and well, I am a Packers fan. I would be interested in doing some regular writing during the season. Because my interest is the minor leagues, my problem would be making it different than what Seth and others are already doing. I expect you still have my email address. Why don't you email me so we could discuss it. -

Baseball without Twins Daily wouldn't be the same. Especially for those of us who are most interested in what's happening down on the farm. Good luck in making whatever changes are needed. And a belated Merry Christmas to all! -
Article: What Do The Twins See In Tyler Kinley?
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I still don't understand last year. If Haley was the guy they wanted, why not draft him with their #1 pick? Why go thru taking someone else and then the trade. -
Article: Twins Must Get Creative To Lure Darvish
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
CNBC just had a report on the new tax law effect on professional athletes. They stated that two current deductions will no longer be allowed under the law: 1) Agent fees paid by the player will no longer be a deductible expense; and 2) Fines levied by the league will not be deductible. Guess Gardy better stay in games in Detroit! Imagine agents could get around their fee by figuring out a way to have the teams pay them directly. -

I know he bought a fantastic home in Deephaven (or next to it). Was that last year? Anyway, I wonder if he might live there year round when his kids start going to school? -
Article: Twins Must Get Creative To Lure Darvish
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It is seldom that anyone ever mentions taxes when talking about signing players. Yet, they are and can be a major factor in these discussions. May not be for the player, but certainly his advisors. I understand that players file tax returns in all markets in which they play. But half their games are at home, thus, half their income is taxed in the State of their home team. So that's a negative for Minnesota versus lots of teams...although not the teams from places like New York or California. And that hit will be bigger now that it appears State and local tax deductions are going to be limited. After all, $27,000,000 at almost ten percent is a lot of money...especially when your Federal deduction looks to be limited to $10k. Will this be a negative for the Twins? Or can they get creative and find a way to help their pitch? -
I don't know what to think of this year's Rule 5 moves. If I were pretty sure Burdi would be gone and was looking at the player they selected, I would have added Burdi to the 40-man and not taken anyone in the draft. But I don't know what the Twins know, about both Burdi and Kinley. What puzzles me more was their moves from a year ago. If they were so high on Haley, why didn't they take him with the #1 pick. Never did understand the logic to take the guy they did, then do the trade with the Angels to get Haley. Would have made sense if the Angels really wanted the #1 pick and sweetened the pot with another prospect. Still can't figure out the logic for that one.

Article: Twins Sign RHP Michael Pineda
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Trevor May should be back sometime in May or early June. Will it be as a starter or reliever? Using a similar timeline, Pineda could be joining the team about three months later. That would be as early as late July, but more likely late August/September. Both will fill in much like that big trade we always are looking for come mid-season. Love this move. So the 40-man roster now has 3 open spots! -

rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I like the trade, Seth. But would prefer giving them up for Archer because 4 years is a lot better than 2. And by including Granite, the Twins would still have 4 open spots on their 40-man roster.- 169 replies

What about the salary question, Seth. Do you know what they typically pay players like Wilson? Are there limitations on what they could pay?

Like you, Nick, I am excited about the moves they have made. And I am hopeful they will make a couple moves over the coming month that will help them stay in the hunt next year. On that front, do you think they will re-sign Kintzler? I could see him as a good addition to the pen...although I remain hopeful they bring in another top reliever also.
-
Have an unrelated question, Seth. With all the top prospects scheduled to be in Rochester this year, who is catching them is going to be very important. Can the Twins over pay a catcher signed to a minor league contract? Could they sign someone like Chris Gimenez to a $300,000 or $500,000 contract? Someone with his experience could prove invaluable to the development of Gonsalves, Romero, etc.

I expect there is another Buxton/Sano/Berrios in this group (other than Royce Lewis), Seth, we just don't know who. And I see this as a special group in part because 10% (5 players) have already made it to the majors. For 90% to not make it would mean that no other player from this list ever plays in the majors. I would think it is more like 60%-70% won't make it...which makes this group special in my mind. Personally, I would put Moya ahead of Burdi as there are to many questions related to Burdi's health versus Moya having already pitched for the Twins including some important innings
