Article: Appreciating Max Kepler
rdehring replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
OK, how does the internet know to have an ad for "Rhine River Cruises" on this spot about Kepler? Hmmmmh! -
Thanks for doing this, Seth, as I found it to be very interesting. Sure looks to me that Palacios is on track to be the Minor League Player of the Year as you find his name amongst the leaders in almost every category. Most surprising to me is his 12 home runs. Another surprise was to see Blankenhorn leading with 8 triples. Wasn't aware that he was that fast?

Took note this morning of what is going on in Chattanooga when I saw they have 60 wins! You look at their lineup and see Gordon and a bunch of other guys not that well known, yet, most are hitting .260-.280. Yes, they have a stable of pretty good starting pitchers and a very good pen, but SIXTY wins? Does a lot of the credit go to Jake Mauer? Seems that his teams are always in the playoffs, no matter where he is. Maybe he will find his way home some day in the not to distant future? I haven't seen Palacios play, Seth, and was wondering about his defense at short? Because the way he can hit, maybe HE is our shortstop of the future. Do you know when Griffin Jax' Air Force commitment ends? Is it next summer? Sure like the results when he is on the mound. Finally, did the Twins bring back the wrong veteran for Tuesday. Certainly hope Gee hangs in there for another start or two.

It seems they have to give Colon one more start at Rochester. Perhaps, the best option is to bring Jorge back for a 3rd look. Or maybe call up Romero for one start. Doesn't make sense to call up Gonsalves as they don't want to do that until September at the earliest so they don't burn any options this year.

Sure we should consider trading Gordon, because it isn't just Javier and Marte on the horizon. Note, I didn't mention Lewis because I doubt he sticks at short. But we also have Palacios and Arraez in A ball with both looking to be well above average hitters. My question, however, is do you consider adding Kohl Stewart to the mix? Like most of us, don't have a clue what he is going to become. Is there some team out there with a top young starter who could be high on him? But yes, Gordon should be available for the right return.

Article: Deadline Primer: Are Twins Buyers Or Sellers?
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Buyers vs. sellers...it doesn't have to be one or the other. They have some parts that can be replaced internally. Listening about trading those parts is where I expect them to start their discussions. I see the Twins considering trades if the trade will make them a better team both today AND in the future. -
At first glance, thought Thorpe's night was a bit disappointing. Then I looked further. In 5.2 innings, he threw 99 pitches...the most since coming back from two years off. It also looks like most of the damage was done in the 6th inning, when he allowed two of his four walks and a two run home run. Looking at the first 5 innings, his outing was excellent. Overall, another step towards his coming back to the pitcher he was before the injury and illness.

Nick made an important point when he mentioned that Gonsalves isn't on the 40-man, thus, it makes no sense to call him up prior to September when burning an option wouldn't come into play. I liked bringing up Jorge as the 26th man for one day only. Great opportunity and experience...and he did very well. Perhaps they do more of that over the coming couple months, ie, alternate bringing up Jorge and Romero for a start or two. They would know it is only for a week to gain experience. Who knows, one of them might shock everyone and pitch so well they can't be sent back.

Where the hell is Westmont College? And what's in the water? Great seeing Bard finally healthy and pitching great, really great. And I think there was a typo in the last sentence of the Curtiss write up. The 'c' should be a 'sh'. Have a great day, Seth.

OK, I know its only 5.1 innings at AAA, but two baserunners? Is it possible this Curtiss guy might be able to pitch for the Twins? Speaking of small sample sizes, Palacios moves up a level and hits close to .400 average. Hmmmm! And who is this Lewis kid at the GCL? Multiple hits in four of six games, may have to start following him! Have a wonderful 4th of July, Seth!

Lots of mention about the 40-man roster in this report, Seth. I was looking at that the other day. In my opinion, I have four MUST adds. They all are pitchers, Gonsalves, Thorpe, Rodriguez and Curtiss. I expect the Twins will add more than four. There are several others that I expect will get consideration, although all have some warts. Included in that group are Stewart, Navarreto, Burdi, Reed, and Bard. I expect I missed a couple, perhaps an International signing from back when.

Zach Granite won't be your typical corner outfielder because of his lack of power. Other than that he appears to be able to do it all...very well. No question, we should see him in Minnesota later this summer. How do the Twins open a spot for him in what is now a very good four man outfield? I don't think the Twins will, or should be, either a buyer or seller next month. Rather, they should be looking for deals that will bring in a young pitcher who will help this fall AND in the future. With Granite on the verge of forcing himself onto their roster, will be very interesting to see how they open a spot for him.

Zack Granite just continues playing beyond anyone's expectations. Expect we will see him up here in September, or sooner should they be able to move an outfielder for pitching in July. What did you think of Busenitz last night, Seth? I saw the last few innings and thought he is someone they can work with. And now that the $1mm savings is set, they can get those two HS pitchers signed.

Like everyone, I wanted the Twins to take the guy named Strasburg. Oh, someone like him wasn't there this year. So in the real world, immediate pitching help doesn't come from the draft. The last two games were examples of how badly the Twins need pitching, both starters and relievers. But that help will only come from one of three places, trades, free agents and pitchers in the high minors. So the answer to their problem wasn't McKay, Greene or Wright. But it may be guys named Jorge, Romero, Gonsalves and maybe Thorpe.

Article: Twins Daily’s Instant Draft Reaction: WTF?
rdehring replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Sure was an interesting day/night, wasn't it John? I sincerely hope they were able to save $$$ on the Lewis pick. Don't know what happened after that, but I suspect someone was no longer on the board. But there are lots of rounds to use the money, even if it ends up approaching $2.0mm. And lets remember they will be drafting #1 on day 3, when they went way over $100,000 to take the pitcher needing TJ last year. I do have a question. If you don't sign a pick in the 1st round, you get an equal pick the following year. When does that end, after the 1st round, COMP A round, round 2? Thanks!- 209 replies

Interesting that you mention Feller. Went goose hunting with him one morning on our farm when I was about 11 or 12. Gave me a baseball with a very nice personal comment. While in college, my parents sold the farm and my Mom tossed it with a lot of other stuff.- 720 replies

Article: Twins Daily Official MLB Draft Day 1
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Was at a dinner one night with a crafty former MLB lefty. His comment was something (I won't print his exact words) to the effect...all this hoopla about throwing 90-95 is nothing but B.....He went on to say he never got close to 90, hit your spots with good stuff and you can be very successful. Didn't check, but I recall he had something like 360 MLB wins, which I believe was the most ever for any lefty.- 720 replies

I recall a pitcher from, I think Chaska, several years ago, Seth. If I recall, he was picked in a comp round or maybe early in the 2nd round. Do you remember who that was? And if so, where is he at?- 18 replies

Chattanooga is in a 3-way tie and face one of them, Montgomery, tonight. Great night to send Gonsalves to the hill. Granite is certainly playing like a young man who wants a promotion. Does someone get traded next month to open a spot for him in the Twins outfield?

*They also have to add guys like Curtiss, Hildenberger, Reed, Busenitz, Burdi and several others this offseason, so we'll see. it'll be interesting. And lets not forget the best pitcher of all that I assume has to be added...Lewis Thorpe.

Great seeing Gonsalves back up to almost 100 pitches. Could missing the first 6 weeks of the season give him the innings to extend his season thru September?

Gotta agree with twinswatch. Don't see how 8 home runs in the month isn't worthy of the top 5. Interesting reading about Cavaness. Thinking back a bunch of years, Seth, didn't the Twins have another prospect from Lindenwood or another school in Belleville (if there is one)? Don't remember the name, thought you might recall.
