Article: The Impending Rochester Rotation Crunch
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Nice problem to have, Nick. And I will add one more to the mix. Don't know his name, but I will be shocked if the Twins don't sign one major league starter to a minor league contract. This year's version of Dillon Gee. So that gives you seven, not including Stewart. I wouldn't be surprised if both Little and Romero begin their season in AA, moving up to Rochester as injuries take their toll at AAA or with the Twins. If everyone is healthy and no one opens with the Twins, someone like Enns will need to move to the pen.- 102 replies

Article: Hopes And Plans For Trevor May
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Don't know whether or not he will be a reliever or starter...that's for others to decide. What I do expect is that he will not be ready for opening day. I see him spending a month to two in XST where he will finalize his rehab. He then gets sent out on a rehab assignment for 20 days and reports to the Twins sometime in late May or June. Bullpen or starting, we'll all know next spring.- 33 replies

Article: Twins Strike Out On Ohtani
rdehring replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Braves cheating could be tailor made for the Twins who have a lot more International money remaining than only a couple teams. Let's get their top guy or maybe a couple of the top four or five.- 68 replies

It isn't realistic to expect any of these young starters to be in the opening day rotation, with the possible exception of Slegers. Gonsalves will need at least half a year at Rochester. Ditto for Jorge. Romero will need much of the year in AAA and then be running out of innings. As for May, it would be a huge surprise if he is ready to pitch on opening day, much less pitch deep into a game. I look for him to begin his season in XST with a rehab trip sometime in May. He could be that jolt the team needs in early summer, kind of like getting someone in a trade. that means that the Twins definitely need one good starter. And a second means there is competition for Mejia, Gibson, Hughes and Slegers for two spots. We all take what you do for granted, Seth. It is appreciated and a thank you doesn't seem to cut it. If we can ever connect, lunch will be on me!

Han Joelo raises an interesting question. Do Lewis and Javier both begin the season in C.R? If they do, will they be sharing shortstop like last year? Or will Javier begin in XST and then slide into C.R. when Lewis moves to Ft. Myers in May or June? In my thinking, both could be the Twins future shortstop. Will be interesting to see how they manage bringing them up together.

Article: From The Handbook: Organizational Depth Chart
rdehring replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The truth is there really isn't anyone else, at least in full season ball. The Twins are going to have to sign several free agent catchers over the winter. One for AAA who will be competition for Garver as backup, someone like Giminez. They are also going to need a couple to fill out Rochester and Chattanooga. -
Every one of these players should be a major league starter if they come anywhere near their ceilings. Granted, four of five are young and could not develop as we hope. But if they reach their ceilings, they all could be all-stars or beyond. And these guys are #6 thru #10. Wow!!!

Article: Byung-Ho Park Signs With KBO’s Nexen Heroes
rdehring replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Expect this is like breaking any contract and something we will never know the full details. After coming to an agreement to return home, he was likely bought out of his contract for a partial buy-out fee. How much, we may never know. -
That got me wondering, Seth. Would Jeffrey Marte have been in the Top 10 had he not been let go recently? Will also be interesting to see how/where you rate the two shortstops compared with each other.

Article: Five Things Twins Fan Can Be Thankful For
rdehring replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I too have always felt that Mauer hit into too many double plays. But for whatever reason, it seemed to be less this year. So I looked it up. He actually grounded into 17 double plays this year. That's about one every ten days...which really isn't a lot at all. -
I knew Gonsalves was going to be added to the 40-man, but was really excited to see that Thorpe was also. I expect he is a Top 5 prospect, but understand that he needs to pitch next year before you, or anyone else, can put him there. Personally, I believe he has the highest ceiling of anyone in the organization right now...well maybe second to that other Lewis. My question, Seth, is why you have Garver this low. His floor is that of a major league backup catcher, which he likely will be in 2018. His ceiling is a starting catcher, likely beginning in 2020. He is expected to hit better than your average catcher and you say he has a cannon for an arm. All reports have him improving a lot defensively, so we could expect that he should continue to get better and eventually be average or even above average behind the plate. Sounds a lot to me like someone who should be 5-10 spots higher than he is.

That's an interesting thought, Seth. Will there be someone available at pick #20 something in the Rule 5 who thy like better than Reed, Stewart or Diaz? I don't know what's out there, however, based on history one wouldn't expect that.. On the other hand, could they work a deal and trade a prospect to someone for the #1 or #2 Rule 5 pick...someone they really like?

Article: Twins Add Three Players To 40 Man Roster
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
We can now see that there is a new sherriff in town. And its going to be interesting...I like it! Unlike the past, they cleared 40-man roster space early and didn't refill it with prospects. Rather, they kept four spots for four players they expect to add over the next month(s). We can all speculate who they will add, but not even the Twins Execs know who they will be able to sign...although I expect they have a good idea on a couple. Expect all four spots will go to pitchers, although one could be a bat or catcher. This method of managing the 40-man also tells me that they like the guys they kept on their roster, all of them. That includes Sleegers, Boshier, and others. Gonsalves, Littell and Thorpe all have a high ceiling. All those left off have some warts...Stewart's lack of results for much of 5 years plus the knee, Diaz is too far away, Burdi's injuries, etc. They will likely clear a spot on the 40-man at the end of spring training when they move May and/or Hughes to the 60-day DL. Having had TJ surgery at the beginning of last season, there is no way May is going to be anywhere other than XSP on April 1st. Personally, I see him spending the first 6 weeks of the year in XSP, then go on a rehab to be ready to rejoin the Twins in June. Could be as a starter, but more likely as a reliever...which wouldn't prohibit him from going back to the rotation in 2019. Moving either to the 60-day will open a spot for any player they want to add who was signed to a minor league contract to the 25-man roster. Do any of the guys left off the 40-man get selected? We will find out in a few weeks. The important thing to remember is that only 20 some guys get picked every year. So the likelihood of losing more than one (or maybe two) of the eight we are all talking about is minimal.- 127 replies

Article: Miguel Sano And The Dread Of 'What If'
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Right on article Nick, thanks. I am of the opinion that the right course for the Twins is: 1) Get Sano 100% healthy; 2) give him time to be as productive as he can...hopefully better than the 1st half this year; and then, 3) Trade him for a BIG return, including one top young starting pitcher (not a prospect, rather someone with a year or two in the major leagues). In addition to the concerns you stated above, I am concerned with what his conditioning will be like as he ages and his contracts get bigger and longer. I am also concerned with his desire to spend more time in one of the more glamorous market. Finally, I am concerned with the amount he will demand and IF that fits with what the Twins can pay when you also consider all the other contracts they will need to extend for the rest of the team. Don't know when the right time will be to pull the trigger, just know it isn't now. Will it be this July? Or maybe next winter? Will it come before or after you do that first extension? -
When I responded above, Seth, I was thinking more of the guys like your second tier of players when you did your Rule 5 article. Expect the time to have moved them would have been July. Perhaps we will see more moves in the future now that the new young management has settled in.

Like you Rosterman, I always wonder why we don't see some of these guys moved before we lose them in either the Rule 5 or ML free agency. Perhaps someone knows, but I am guessing there isn't much of a market for these type of trades. Wouldn't help to get somebody's player back who is in the same situation. Anyone have any insight into this problem?

Two pitchers who barring injury will have solid major league careers, plus three young infielders with good upside makes for a bright #16-#20. Doubt there are any future stars in this group, although any of them could surprise us.

Article: What's Next For Kennys Vargas?
rdehring replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Has he ever played regularly for an extended period of time? Even 3/4 of the games for more than a week or two? Until he does, we really won't know what he can do. -
Article: What's Next For Kennys Vargas?
rdehring replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
My position is that Vargas should be penciled in as the Twins full-time DH while also serving as Maruer's backup at first base. Let's see him get a year with 550-600 PA. If he does, I believe he will perform at a level that the Twins will want him doing that for the next decade. As for Sano possibly needing to be the DH, worry about that when/if it happens. -
If there are 30 players better than this group, the Twins organization is good...really good. Would love to see the Twins move a couple players in the next week so they don't lose several players in the Rule 5 draft. Unfortunately, most teams are facing the same problem and those type of moves probably won't happen.

Thanks, Seth, this is always interesting. I have a concern over Mejia. I don't like his lack of mobility, nor how he seems to not be able to go past 4+ or 5 innings. Will he end up a long reliever? Or maybe more of a AAAA guy? Anyway, I am not comfortable with him even penciled into the starting rotation, although I expect I am in a minority. Also, assume all the 2017 salary values are meant to be 2018...time does fly, doesn't it?

Article: Ranking The Rule 5 Options
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Have a question about Diaz, Seth. Does he have to be added this year? MiLB shows him as signing with the Twins on November 21, 2013...two days after his 17th birthday. The rule of thumb I use is that players under 18 have 5 years before they are Rule 5 eligible. For him, that would be 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. Per you rule 1 above, you say signed in 2013 (during the minor league season). If MiLB has his signing date correct, he was not signed until after the season...kind of like the Sano situation a few years ago. Have you checked with the Twins on him? If he isn't eligible, that could also give you room to move the player I would hate to lose the most, Lewis Thorpe, into your 'lock' category.- 59 replies

Vasquez and Morani have too much talent to be 49 and 50, Seth. And by sending him to the AFL, Vasquez is awfully close to becoming a Twin. I don't see how the Twins will have room to add Bard to the 40-man. Not only are there several relievers ahead of him, I count seven starters who should be added (won't be room for all seven). If he isn't added, is it likely he is taken by someone in the Rule 5? By the way, what is Chargois' injury status?

Article: Diving Into The Offseason: A Sano Extension?
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
No problem with such an extension, Seth. But I am of the opinion that of all the players talked about, Sano should be at the top of the list to be traded. Perhaps, such an extension would help by giving the buyer a longer term return. Not certain to the timing, although I doubt it should be this winter. Perhaps next July, but probably next winter. My biggest concern is related to his role in the 'chemistry' of the Rosario/Sano/Berrios/Polanco/Buxton/Kepler/Vargas group on the team. If he is that critical leader, my interest in trading him goes down. I believe the Twins are going to have to trade someone to get that young starter every bit as good, or better, than Berrios. Not another prospect, but someone who has one or two very good years under their belt. Toss in another prospect (coming to us) and I would pull the trigger to put the rotation at a championship level. (I am assuming at least one of the guys at AA last year is going to make it big) Why Sano? Too many questions, weight, defensive (he has done better than most of us expected) uncertainties amongst others. Also, he has the potential to be great and should bring the return we need. Could probably get that from he and Buxton and Buxton should not be traded, period! Does he become another Cabrera? Maybe, but not certain I care if we get the right starting pitcher that makes us a contender for the next ten years.- 49 replies
