Article: MIN 6, STL 0: Fernand0 R0mer0!
rdehring replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Not concerned that he has only three pitches because his fastball is at least two different pitches the way he moves it. Needs some work on his change, hopefully getting it a couple mph slower. Romero and Berrios or Berrios and Romero? Damn, this is exciting. And like Doc Bauer, I have been thinking about his innings during both of his starts. What might work well when Trevor May is ready to join the Twins in July, move him to the bullpen. Limiting him to a couple innings every five days would cut the # of innings from say 30 (5*6) to 10. Then get him back into his regular starting spot in September so he is available for game #1 or game #2 in the playoffs. This plan would solve two problems, keeping Romero available for the playoffs AND creating a spot for Trevor May when he is available. Now, how do we find a spot for Santana next month?- 79 replies

Thanks for a great read, Steve. Didn't know much about this kid. May need to begin following more closely.

Nice start for Gonsalves. Lets hope he can back this up with another dozen starts over the next couple months. That should give him the experience and track record the Twins want to see. Should then be ready to move up, if and when the Twins have a need. If that need doesn't arise, probably won't see him in a Twins uniform until September. Also, great seeing Rooker back on the field. Was curious what actually happened in Chattanooga. Did the runner on second advance to third with the guy on third not going home? Or was he out at third before the runner scoring crossed the plate?

Great seeing Rortvedt have a big game with his bat after a bit of a slump. This kid can't move up fast enough with the Twins current lack of catching depth at all the higher levels. Speaking of catchers. Does anyone know more about Grzelakowski? Did he play some independent ball out of college before signing with the Twins? And lets not assume that either Berrios or Romero don't have what it takes to become a #1 or even a true Ace. No one knows what their ceilings are, but they sure have a lot of talent.

Article: Griffin Jax's Baseball Career Resumes
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
No, you are not. But I do expect part of the deal the Air Force worked out with him is that if the Twins pay his housing, travel, etc., the Air Force won't be paying his housing allowance. More important, however, is that this is FANTASTIC news for both Jax and the Twins. He has a lot of talent which can now begin being developed. Don't know where he will start his season, but expect he will end it back in Florida with the Miracle. -
Berrios-Romero-Graterol. That could be a trio of starters, all with ACE or #1 talent, that will lead the Twins to the World Series three or four years from now. All will be home grown and in the organization before the changes in the front office. Hmmmm? Not saying that new blood wasn't needed or that the new guys aren't doing a lot of exciting things. Just thinking that the old guys did a lot more good than often given credit for. Of the three, one draft pick and two International signees. I don't remember how big their bonuses were, do you Seth? But I don't recall that either Romero or Graterol were big $$$ guys...i.e., more than a million. And there are lots of candidates for the #4 and #5 spots in the rotation. Only hope I am still around to enjoy this!

Curious, Seth, why Joe Cronin isn't in your Top 5? Each segment of his triple slash is better than any of the top 5. The only negative I can see is that all three of the honorable mention Miracle players had less at bats than your Top 5. But someone with a 1.009 OPS had one hell of a month. Also am a bit surprised that two of the top five and three honorable mention all play in Fort Myers. Would expect they would have a better record with that much fire power.

Does anyone know the health status of Wander Javier? Sure looks like his moving up to Cedar Rapids would be a good time for Lewis to move up to Fort Myers. Spending half the year in Hi-A this year could put Lewis on track to join the Twins late next year, shortly after his 20th birthday! Great to see Kirilloff driving in more than a run a game. What a great start for a kid who missed all of last year. For that reason I could see his spending more time in Cedar Rapids, perhaps the entire year.

I'll second the comments about Thorpe, Seth. Especially the fact that he had given up only one walk in his previous four starts. Five walks and two hits means he probably faced 19 batters. With six K's and five walks, that means 11 of the 19 didn't put the ball in play. That seems unusually high, so might have something to do with the Mobile lineup. Maybe they were fouling off a lot of balls to drive up the pitch count. Still waiting for Thorpe to take that next step and begin dominating. But we all know the move up to AA may be the biggest step prospects face. He is still very young without a lot of experience after missing two years. Although he has struggled a bit, I find his start to AA very encouraging. But then I would as I have loved this kid since his performance in winter ball down under when he was 17 or 18 years old.

Article: The Beginning of the End for Phil Hughes
rdehring replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Not certain how much of the contract is covered by insurance, but would think some. Also don't know if the Twins could collect as he is healthy enough to pitch, just not at the level he was pitching when the policy was purchased. Expect there is some negotiating to be done between the Twins/doctors and their insurance carrier. As for his future, unless he can be something different coming out of the pen, I see him retiring sometime between now and the end of the year.- 63 replies

I would probably have given the pitcher of the day nod to Gonsalves. 7.2 innings of shutout, one hit ball at AAA seems better to me than either of the guys individually at Cedar Rapids. And to me the award is pitcher of the day, not pitchers of the day. So he would be my selection. I think we all need to remember something about Lynn as he struggles early this year. Not only did he miss most of spring training, he hasn't been able to settle into any routine in April due to all the cancellations. If he hasn't improved by the end of May, then do something.

Article: Something Has Clicked with Eduardo Escobar
rdehring replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I have believed for some time that Escobar may be the most important Twin to get extended over the summer. He is a starter. Just never certain where on the diamond he will be playing. Plus, I understand he is a special guy to have in the locker room! -
That takes them down to about $3.5mm, Seth. Unless there are a lot of other big spenders with less money or the Twins find a good chunk in a trade, expect the kid talked about above is not in the cards. They may still be very active, but may be looking at a good number of prospects in the $200,000-$600,000 range.

Looking at the box score doesn't tell how Thorpe's night went. The inning he gave up four runs, all were unearned. Had a lead off infield single, followed by an error. Can't tell, but it looks like it was a double play ball that got no outs. Next guy gets a groundball single to right and the bases are loaded. He then struck out two before the roof fell in. OK, he wasn't able to work out of a jam. But none of the first five hitters hit anything hard...so I would call it tough luck. Again had zero walks, which is encouraging for any pitcher looking to be part of the Twins staff in the future.

This is off the subject, well kind of. My nephew was running the Iron Man in Hawaii a few years ago. Part way thru the marathon, he developed a blister under his big toe nail. He's a dentist and does drilling every day, so he stopped and drilled his own toe nail to relieve the pressure so he could finish the race.

Article: Twins Catchers Quietly Struggling
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I believe Rortvedt is the Twins catcher of the future. The question is when will that future begin? If he moves up to Fort Myers by early summer, I could see him getting his first action as early as September, 2019. But it is more likely he will join the Twins sometime in 2020 and not be in the discussion as the potential starter until 2021 at the earliest. Castro/Garver will be back in 2019. But it looks like they will need Garver to be the starter in 2020 with a veteran brought in to back him up until Rortvedt is ready later in the year. Barring injuries, Rortvedt could be their starting catcher for the rest of the decade ('20's).- 23 replies

Blankenhorn is having an interesting start to the season. Could he become a Dozier like second baseman a couple years from now? Don't know about his defense, but certainly looks like he could be a 20+ home run guy. Looking forward to Thorpe's start tonight. See if he can take another step with a quality start.
-
Great seeing Jay back on the mound. Hopefully he can stay there for the rest of the year so we have a chance of seeing whether or not he is worthy of filling a late inning spot in the Twins bullpen. And for all of those who are disappointed in the start to the season for the Twins or any specific prospects. Lets keep in mind that this season's start has been ridiculous with all the games cancelled. Although I never played the game, I have to believe the gaps in playing must affect the performance of players, some more than others.

Check the score in the write-up for Cedar Rapids, Seth. Have a question about Joe Cronin. I see he played at BC and has New England ties. Is he related to Joe Cronin, the former Red Sox Hall of Famer and ex AL President? Baxendale just keeps pitching well, as he has for the past few years. Does your crystal ball show him making it to the Twins this year? And do you think he could contribute at that level?

Will be interesting to see if Lewis moves up to Fort Myers when Javier goes to Cedar Rapids. Question about Benninghoff, Seth. I recall that he made an appearance or two in the GCL at the end of last season. If that is correct, wouldn't he be on a normal schedule this spring...other than maybe a pitch/innings limit?

Great start for Romero. Really want to see him continue to develop and join the Twins by late summer. Interesting to see Lewis have a day off the day after going 4-4. Isn't related to a move up to Fort Myers, is it? Probably a bit early, but if Javier is ready to come off the DL it could make sense...and yes, I know that would be pushing it this early in the year. Speaking of Javier, does anyone know how his rehab is coming?
