Five shutout innings for Stewart with only two hits is good. One strikeout and four walks isn't. I guess he is a pitcher who will not dominate a game like we have seen Berrios, Romero, Graterol or even Gonsalves. My question, Seth. Do you see a pitcher with this type of stuff/ability able to be successful in the big leagues? Or do you see his ceiling more of a AAAA type that will struggle to break into a good starting rotation?

Grossman was in for Morrison, who had a night off versus a tough lefty. Adrianza won't see much playing time as soon as Sano is back and Escobar moves back to short. Wilson is the backup to a backup. Buxton should come around once he gets back into a groove following his injuries. And Polanco will be back the first of July. I know a lot of us, including me, have been disappointed in the Twins so far this spring. Yet, they have played most of the year without four players (of the eight position players) who were projected to be their opening day starters...Castro, Polanco, Sano and Buxton (for several weeks). That's a lot for any team to overcome. Let's see where they are come All-Star time.

Expect the Twins view May's first start at AAA as a success. He should get at least four more starts before his 30 day rehab is up. Lots of time to get into shape to come up and help the Twins. But will there be a spot for him in their rotation? Followed the Lookouts game last night on my ipad. Was shocked seeing Thorpe give up home run after home run, four, early in the game. Fortunately, they all were solo and the Lookouts came back for the W. But the Lookouts hit three out, leading to a question. Does anyone know if Biloxi's stadium is on the small side? Or maybe the temp/humidity came into play as 7 home runs is a lot. With Thorpe on his first of three options, I went back to look at his career. Pitched well in the GCL as a 17 year old, followed by another good year at Cedar Rapids as a young 18 year old. But then he missed all of his 19 and 20 year old seasons. Came back last year with a successful season at Hi-A Fort Myers. Yes, he wasn't as good in a few late season games in AA, but the year was a success. Although you can find something good in almost every start this year, he is no where near dominating AA as a 22 year old. And for a pitcher some of us believe has the potential to be a front of the rotation starter, he has to dominate AA...at some point. But considering his age and after missing two years, he has lots of season remaining to gain experience and settle in at AA. If he can do that, there should be no problem seeing him join the Twins sometime during the mid-to-late part of next year. Come on Lewis, there are lots of us waiting to see you pitch at Target Field.

Tommy Milone is now getting lit up at AAA. Maybe time to move into coaching? Great seeing Rooker with a 4-bagger while that average moves up. Keep this up for another couple weeks and everyone's concerns should be behind them. But he isn't the best hitting first basemen on that team. Wiel is having a great season...hope the Vandy product keeps it up. Great baseball school, hell, a great school.

Don't need anyone today, or tomorrow. Expect they will upgrade their depth at some point over the next couple months.

I really like Tom's suggestion. Piggy back him with Santana. Yes, that would mean one less arm in the bullpen. BUT, the entire bullpen would get a day off every 5 days. Just may work. Begin with Romero going 5-6 innings with Santana coming in to finish it. After a few of those games, flip so that Santana comes in and pitches 5-6 innings with Romero finishing. If Romero only pitches 3+ innings every 5th day for the last half of the season, his innings should be fine and his arm fresh for the playoffs.

Like Slegers success at AAA. Can he be a decent #4 or #5 starter for the Twins some day? Doubt he will get the chance, but would like to see him get a few starts to see if he can be ok. That would give him more value should the Twins decide to move him this summer or next winter. Appears that Rooker is settling in at AA. Has hits in his last seven games (8 of 10). Not any extra base hits in his three hit night last night, so that is the last part of his game to get on track. Did a double take when looking at today's Chattanooga box score and saw they were 11 games over .500. Hadn't looked at their record of late, but remember they got off to a really bad start the first week or ten days. Hell of a lineup again this year. The Lookout fans gotta be real happy since the Twins took over the franchise.

It may be time for Twins Daily to set up some type of poll or pool...who will be the first Kernels player promoted to Fort Myers? Lots of great candidates!

If he is #2, that would put him ahead of either Lewis or Romero, right? If he is #1, he would be ahead of both. Or don't you consider Romero a prospect any more? Lewis is a potential five tool superstar. Graterol is a potential hard throwing ACE. Who is more valuable to a team and worthy of the top slot, now that's an interesting question?

Just checked Lamont Wade's stats. He has 11 strikeouts in 111 at bats with 19 walks. Result is a .402 OBP. Also saw that Lewis has almost as many stolen bases (10 in 11 attempts) as strikeouts (11) in just under 100 at bats. Maybe those two guys will cut into the number of K's the Twins take in a few years. Although I don't have a clue where Wade can play other than a 4th outfielder spot as I expect/hope that the Twins outfield of Rosario, Buxton and Kepler is around for a decade or longer. But he could be an upgrade to the 4th outfielder spot, both at the plate and in the field.

Every one keeps forgetting about Pineda. Expect the Twins have high expectations for him in 2019. Personally, I think we have seen the last of Mejia as a regular starter for the Twins. To many better arms ahead of him.

Although Gibson was effective last night, looing at the results, I didn't think he was pitching well earlier in the game. At one point, he had thrown 52 pitches with only 26 strikes...50%. Was constantly missing the strike zone and sure felt like he was struggling. Great seeing him get thru 6 innings and allowing only a couple of runs.

I thought rehab assignments were 20 days. Did they change it? Or is it different for TJ surgeries? That was why I was asking Seth what he his prognostication was.

OK, Seth, got a couple questions about May. If my math is right, he has to come off his rehab assignment by June 1. Assuming he doesn't have any problems with his arm, what do you think the Twins will do? Will he join the Twins as a starter? Or as a reliever? If they deem it best to give him more time in the minors, does he have options remaining? I know, I know...it is best to sit back and see how he does and what happens. Just curious about your thoughts. Great at bat for Rooker. Maybe that will be the one to get his bat going.

Article: MIN 5, LAA 4: Rally Rosie
rdehring replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Certainly hope the Twins extend both Escobar and Rosario this summer. They are the heart of this team. And let's give Buxton a break. He missed what, two, three weeks and has been back for two games. Very few players would step back into that situation and immediately look good at the plate. And most of those aren't with us anymore!- 30 replies

Navarreto has long been known for his defense. Getting hits in 8 of his last 10 has quietly seen his average move up to .274. If he can hit at that level, he may have a bright future for the Twins. Yes, McKay had a nice night against Cedar Rapids. But what is a college superstar who was drafted #4 doing in low A ball a year after the draft? Haven't followed his career this past year so there may be something I don't know about. But I would be disappointed if I had written him the check he demanded.

Article: LAA 7, MIN 4: What’s Up With Berrios?
rdehring replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Was watching the hockey game with a few brief stops at the Twins. Saw a couple batters in the 1st or 2nd inning where Berrios threw 3 strikes (one at the top of the box, one at the bottom and one on the outside corner) that all showed most of the ball in the strike zone. All three were called balls. Could see his frustration. He had to put the ball over the middle to get a strike and a couple batters latter...boom, 2-0 Angels.- 48 replies

This young man may be the most pleasant surprise in the organization this year, Seth. And at a position of real need for the organization. His performance this spring is almost too good to be true. Can it continue? I guess we will have to stay tuned to find out. If he does, is a summer promotion to Chattanooga too much to wish for? Thanks for a great article on this new Twin, Seth.

Thanks Steve. Great seeing this kid back on the field and doing so well. Can't wait for Javier to join them, hopefully soon.

I don't think my expectations are perverted at all. I expect a lot more from a #4 overall pick than we have gotten from Stewart. And it seems the Twins agree. After all, they didn't add him to their 40-man roster last fall. Seems to me its about time Mr. Stewart starts giving the Twins a return on that big check he accepted back when he was drafted. When he starts doing that, he will have gotten me back on board his fan club. And the rest of baseball agreed with the Twins as he passed through the Rule 5 draft.
-
Don't know what to think about Stewart. Six K's in a technical quality start is a good sign. But 10 hits in six innings sure doesn't sound good. He lost me as a fan some time ago. Outings like this won't bring me back. And Grzelakowski's bat continues to be hot. Three hits, including a pair of doubles, has to get our attention. I think Seth may have something coming about him, but was wondering if anyone knows anything about his defense behind the plate? Although he is hitting only a buck eighty something, Arraez got another hit last night giving him hits in 9 of his last 11 games.

Article: Top Twins Prospects Are Performing
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Dairy farmers had a saying back when, Seth. And that was that "the cream always rises to the top." Sure is true with this group with those Top 5 doing better than any of us could have expected. A bit concerning that you have already restricted Graterol's ceiling...to #2. [if I knew how, would insert one of those smiley faces here] To be honest, have forgotten about Jorge. With all the starters lined up ahead of him, doubt we will ever see Jorge in a Twins uniform again. When healthy, he joins several others to form a group who are going to provide trading capital for Falvine. Hopefully, they will take advantage of the opportunity to move several for prospects a year or two behind them.- 36 replies

It seems that there is something positive from every start Lewis Thorpe makes. Last night, 70 strikes out of 100 pitches while coming within two outs of a quality start. Important steps at AA, even though they often seem to be baby steps. I know Lachlan Wells has been following the footsteps of Thorpe, but couldn't he have skipped Tommy John? Great seeing Arraez with two hits, Seth. Checked to see that he has hits in 8 of his last 10 games. After a slow start following his year off, he is beginning to look like the hitter he was before the knee injury. And that could be GREAT NEWS for the Twins!
