  1. You read my mind. I wonder if this will be the infinite force (command the fastball) versus the immovable object (Gibson's "nibbling", especially on first pitches).
  2. And wasn't one of the two errors on a foul ball when the batter eventually did not get on base?
  3. I agree completely-- I was just trying to nudge the conversation away from pointing fingers.
  4. Can we agree that it’s just too bad that the Jay and Stewart picks didn’t make our best dreams come true?
  5. Excellent question re finances and Montreal. The previous owners were committed to trying to move the team--it really was like the movie Major League. They didn't even have an English language TV deal. New owners would probably have to sign a 20+ year lease. This leads to two major differences in funding now compared to then: First, Canada has gone from having zero all-sports networks to many 9the family of TSN's in English and French and SportsNet), and they are hungry for programming. There would be decent TV deals. Second, the new stadium would be (I) not only in downtown, but (ii) a baseball stadium with seats that face the field, which would no longer be made of green linoleum. On a different note: I think moving the A's to Portland and the Rays to, well, anywhere (Nashville, Charlotte, Montreal) might precede any expansion. Finally, Charlotte's desirability lost some steam following the bank-led Great Recession.
  6. Ha Ha Ha! You cannot imagine the complete distain Les Montrealais would have if they were considered "Midwestern". Maybe switch Montreal and Detroit.
  7. Let's see how the second basemen for NYY, LAD and CHC do in the playoffs. If one or more play poorly, there may be a veritable hue and cry for an update that just MAYBE increases Dozier's value.
  8. But, the bottom line has to be: Great prognosis Mr. Hagerman. Maybe you can help me pick stocks?
  9. Unthinkable indeed. Per MLB.com, the post season probability for the Twins was 4% on August 4.
  10. Thanks to the staff for putting this together. And I agree with separating out an all -star team from a top prospects ranking. Speaking of which, will there be such a re-ranking this fall or next spring?
  11. Can someone confirm that, as of today, Garver is on neither the active roster nor the 40 man? Further, again as of today, that there only 2 catchers on these rosters? Just wondering.
  12. The correlation between BB% and ISO is very strong. Yes. I think its a strict mathematical relation: ISO = BB%/(1 + BB%) (and since its not exactly linear in BB%, the correlation will be a little less than 100%)
  13. Thank you for thinking of our oft-forgotten franchise toiling away in the DR. Might anyone have an idea of next steps for these players? When might they start playing in the US?
  14. This is an excellent point. Fortunately, there's a good chance they'll be battling for home field advantage when they play other WC contenders. And, if the final series matters for the Twins, they may be playing the Mud Hens rather than the Tigers.
  15. Hi Seth; I've been following Johnathan Rodriguez for a few months now. Obviously the numbers speak for themselves. But at 27, are we looking at a 16 year old tee-ing off on Little League opponents? (More precisely, a 27 year old versus 23 year olds). Does his age / level suggest AAA at 28? The pros at 29? Thanks
  16. Be aware! About a month ago, I not only pointed out that there were a number of DSL players hitting the proverbial cover off the ball, but that, by nay measure, they were doing so by 20 points.
  17. But don't we now have a closer who (as of yesterday) had a 50-50 close probability? Yes, he closed a 3 run lead Friday.
  18. Congratulations to whomever scouts Alderson Broaddus University. Or, might this be an "analytics" find. Nit-picking, but did one notice that none of the top 5 were draftees?
  19. Great article! And I really appreciated the salary discussions. Given that the offense seems to be clicking, I would rather spend a theoretic $18 million on starting pitching. And here is a way-too-early opening day batting order (against a RH SP): •2B - Brian Dozier •1B - Joe Mauer •CF - Byron Buxton •3B - Miguel Sano •LF - Eddie Rosario •RF - Max Kepler •DH - •SS - Jorge Polanco •C - Jason Castro
  20. Nice article! I hope he doesn't have to be shifted to 2B-- there are too many prospects lined up there.
  21. My three thoughts: 1. They'll probably give it to an offensive 1B. As many of you have mentioned, the award has devolved to the level of the Cable Ace awards 2. 2 years at $7-9 mill per. 3 years at $6? 3. Actually a question: do they give three OF gold gloves, or 1 per OF position?
  22. One more start-- limit to 4 or 5 innings, then one (unlimited) start in their playoffs. Isn't that what major league teams do when they are coasting into the playoffs?
