  1. Yeah, going with conventional trade targets may not open many doors, might have to be quite a bit outside the box to entice a less predictable trade partner. I'm still interested in guys with top end stuff who maybe haven't reached their potential.
  2. You're missing 90% of the pieces, and free agency is not that simple. And it doesn't make me feel better. I wan't Wheeler, but I'm not going to go pointing fingers when we know nothing about what's going on.
  3. You don't know that. The Rangers were out before the Twins. There will soon be 29 teams out of the running. We likely will never know all of the offers and we will likely never know all of Wheeler's preferences and demands. If the Twins don't get Wheeler, can't we just be disappointed that we didn't get him without having to over-villainize someone?
  4. That they there were at least six teams trying to get Wheeler and the Twins are one of the 5 that won't get him?
  5. If it’s not Cole, Strasburg or Wheeler I’d probably prefer a trade. There are other free agent pitchers I’d take, but none I’d want to run out Gsme 1 vs the Yankees.
  6. They weren’t at the time though. Those guys were all considered 2nd tier starters in their free agent class and now look terrible in hindsight. I want free agent pitchers, but there’s certainly some cautionary tails right in our own backyard. But pretending the Twins haven’t used the free agent market to acquire free agent pitchers that were top 10-20ish overall free agents is quite inaccurate.
  7. Wheeler has reportedly told the Rangers they are out of the running: https://www.dallasnews.com/sports/rangers/2019/12/04/source-free-agent-zack-wheeler-has-eliminated-the-rangers-from-consideration/ I'm only interested in this because it sounds like Wheeler told them they are out, not the other way around. I'd really like to hear what the impetus for Wheeler's rejection is. Though getting that info is probably a pipe dream. Also, I'm really surprised none of the Yankees, Astros, Angels or Dodgers are in on this. Less so with the Dodgers I guess as they've made it clear the past several years that they don't want to do long term deals. They aren't all going to get Cole and Strasburg.
  8. Ervin Santana, Phil Hughes, Ricky Nolasco and Lance Lynn might disagree.
  9. The problem is, if you pass on all the other pitchers waiting around for Cole and A ) his offer ends up being something crazy like 275M or B ) he doesn't have interest in coming here, the team is screwed. As much as I want Cole, the Twins have to make sure they secure pitching help, and gambling that they can get the best pitcher in the game when he's ready to negotiate in February risks securing nothing.
  10. I don't get why you keep bringing up Alonso. Is someone suggesting the Twins have a player equivalent to Alonso who they should trade for Chapman? I don't see anyone suggesting they do or they should. Chapman is 26, has a really good bat despite playing in a pitchers ballpark, great defense and draws a ton of walks. That ability to draw walks is a big safety net to help prevent him from going belly-up; he'll get on base a lot which means he likely won't slump. It's why Rosario, Schoop and Cron can go ice cold, while Polanco, Kepler and Cruz can ride out a hitless streak and still not kill the lineup. With his excellent on base skills, well above average power and elite defense, he looks like Scott Rolen, who was rarely a sexy player but ended up one of the best 3B of all time without anyone really talking about it.
  11. Kirilloff didn't exactly crush the ball last year. A prospect's rankings are all on a knife's edge anyway. If everyone were to rank the Twins corner bat prospects like Kirilloff, Larnich, Rooker, Raley, Blankenhorn and Wiel, everyone will put Kirillof at the top of the list. But when it all plays out in the end, he's probably got no better than a 40% shot at actually being the best of that bunch. Bottom line is, the Twins have too many similar prospects for too few positions, and it's always going to be a crap shoot as to which ones, if any, will be useful MLBers. If the Twins like an established player from another team and that team wants one of these such players, let them take their pick, the odds are against them that they'll chose the right one in the long run.
  12. Andy Kaufman? This all makes sense now. And what a relief, I heard he was dead.
  13. I'm thinking that anyone who wants merchandise with one of these original logos on it might have to act fast. I predict a redesign in the very near future once the team realizes most parents aren't buying their kids as many crotch monster ballcaps as expected.
  14. I'm not one who's against changing things up, but The Mighty Mussels? Uh, that's just really bad. So, really dumb and bad and embarrassing and even more bad. Like how every Pee Wee football team has a "Giants" in their league. "They're just little guys, but they're called the Giants! Get it?! GET IT?!" Also, now how self conscious is the 20-year-old beanpole 160 lb lefty going feel? He doesn't get to be part of the pun at all! I think they should make that shell pink though.
  15. I'd think Step 1 is talking to him on the phone, which Wolfson said they did.
  16. Raley, Rooker and Wiel are my guesses at the moment, though maybe not until May-ish. Maybe they bring back Cron with the intention of letting one of the young guys getting to push him out of the starting lineup, or if the team is healthy coming out of spring training, starting with a platoon of Sano/Gonzalez/Garver. I think the three Rochester 1B/OF are quite a bit closer than Kirilloff at this time. I don't have much interest in trading for a 1B unless it's an inexpensive short-term stop gap.
  17. I wouldn't think Oakland would trade Chapman, but I also wouldn't think they'd make half of the trades they do. They sure like to shake things up every now and then, even when it seems like it's out of the blue. Though I'd guess if they were going to trade someone unexpectedly, it'd be more likely to be the more easily replaceable Matt Olson across the diamond from Chapman.
  18. Well the rest of the league doesn't appear to think so. Top 7 in MVP votes and a Gold Glove winner the past two years. He was a 1st round pick, so it's not like his production has come out of nowhere, he always had the expectations that he could be a top end talent. Looks an awful lot like Josh Donaldson just before he was traded to Toronto actually. Except two years younger.
  19. John Means is a soft tossing high contact righty. He had a good year but he's not a guy anyone would ever want leading a WS contending rotation, and he doesn't have the stuff to become that guy. He doesn't do a lot for me. Yeah, a guy like Wheeler is a risk, but he's got a 97MPH heater, he strikes out a batter an inning and he's not going to make you worry about his control. It might not all come together, but at least he has the potential to be able to match up against the Yankees or Astros. I don't think anyone could say the same about even the other pitchers considered in his tier like Keuchek, Ryu or even Bumgarner, let alone anyone on Baltimore's staff. And I realize your Means suggestion was in no way suggesting that the team shouldn't get a guy like Wheeler. Sounded like you were on board with free agents in addition to trades.
  20. So far most of the players seem to be getting "overpaid". I'm very surprised by all of this, I wonder if there's some behind the scenes stuff going on with ownership in an effort to put up a good front for the upcoming CBA. After watching the past two years, most of these signings are very uncharacteristic. Also, I wonder if Odorizzi is having second thoughts about taking that QO right about now.
  21. Well depending on whether they play Moose at 2B or 3B, Joe Morgan or Tony Perez may be available.
  22. Yeah, don't get me wrong, I don't think that it's a certainty that Wheeler has already peaked, I just don't think that we should be expecting improvement due to our excellent pitching coach as the Mets already had an excellent pitching coach.
