  1. It is a good and necessary move. We might look back in hindsight a few years down the road and have “lost” this deal. It will still have been a good and necessary move.
  2. I think Correa might opt in next year. His performance is not elite and might not get him the contract he wants. He may bet on himself to be closer to the 19 or 21 seasons next year.
  3. Aren’t both pitching prospects better than any pitching prospect in the Twins organization?
  4. If they trade Correa I hope it is for help next year. An example might be sending Correa and cash in a three team trade with the Yankees or Phillies who send prospect capital to the Reds who send Mahle to the Twins
  5. Jake Cave in his first two years had a 112 OPS+. Jake Cave for his career has a positive OOA and UZR. He had a disabling stress fracture in his back and could not hit before or after but worked hard to get back and found success in AAA. If he is back to a league average or better bat and an average outfield glove he is worthy of a roster spot. The persistent ridiculing is tiresome.
  6. Larnach, Lewis, Woods-Richardson and Balazovic is comparable but not enough. Marte is the better headliner. They would need to replace Balazovic with someone better to top the Mariner deal.
  7. My apologies for being off topic in the Ober discussion but this did make me wonder. I will acknowledge that he does not quality secondary pitches but I do wonder about the fastball. How would we see the rpm going down in the data? I can see the spin rate remained pretty stable in his last start. His last 4 fastballs were 2234-2276 which was a little higher than the median fastball for that game.
  8. I was going by the expected batting average. The only home run that game with an expected batting average of 1.000 was Buxton’s. Hosmer’s was in the .900s. Two were centered at .200.
  9. Ryan was at 82 pitches. he was throwing strikes. Two of the home runs had an expected batting average around .200. All were just out of the reach of the outfielder. If he had pitched exactly the same but different conditions/park resulted in two home runs and three outs on the warning track would we be frustrated that he was pulled too early?
  10. They did lose a starter in the spring in Domingo German. Even so they have been very healthy and have the depth to manage injuries.
  11. On the Lewis thought..,, The collision into the wall didn’t seems unusual. There had to be a weakness that would have surfaced at some point.
  12. I think that offer falls way short. The Twins don’t have anyone to match Marte. If they match BTV it will take Larnach, Lewis, Woods-Richardson and Balazovic. That still wouldn’t be enough because though the value is the same the Mariners offer has the better headliner. Replace Balazovic with Rodriguez and I think Castillo is a Twin.
  13. I would have left him in. The pitch count was low enough. He was throwing strikes. He got hit hard but all 5 home runs were in the first row. Outfielders made a play on all 5. They need him to be able to work through a struggle and go deep. That didn’t happen last night. If he can’t handle getting beat and coming back stronger then he won’t have a long career in baseball.
  14. Do they have the prospects to up the ante? They certainly couldn’t match Marte.
  15. That makes sense. If they don’t add to the fastball and increase slider usage I wonder if they are a major league talent. Is Bailey Ober a major leaguer with an 88 mph fastball?
  16. According to BTV the Twins could have traded a package of Larnach, Lewis, Woods-Richardson and Balazovic and nearly matched the deal. The Mariners offer is still better though since Marte is a better headliner of the deal and Lewis is a question mark. In order to win the deal they would need to add something significant like Rodriguez in place of Balazovic.
  17. I guess it depends what the Reds are looking for in return. If they are looking for the best pitching prospect offered the Twins don’t have anything to offer today that will convince them to make that deal. The Twins don’t have top end pitching prospects. The Reds might get to the deadline without that offer of someone better than Woods-Richardson and turn to the Twins who can add some good bats.
  18. I think their best chance to win was counting on Duran to hold down the 8th and 9th and finding a way to score in the top of the 9th. Neither happened.
  19. I expected Duran was in for two innings. Unfortunately he couldn’t throw strikes and couldn’t make it to the 9th. If Duran does well in the 8th they don’t need Duffey until the 10th at which point they probably still lose with the absent late game offense. The offense could have taken some pressure off by scoring a run or two in the late innings.
  20. The most important addition is a starter to push Gray and Ryan down a slot. Five innings and two runs is a reasonable performance from a bullpen. I would take an ERA of 3.60 overall from the pen. I don’t know how they can come up with the best offer for Castillo but it is essential. They also need to expect Ryan and Gray to go through the order a third time as well as Castillo. That will reduce the burden on the bullpen. Two arms are needed in the pen also but the top prospect capital has to go for Castillo.
  21. I don’t see a roster crunch. There are several players that can be removed from the 40 to make space even accounting for the players in the 60. All of the players are near enough that they can contribute next year with the exception of Urbina. I would no put him on the 40. Trade partners want near ready players also so they might need to be traded but the motivation shouldn’t be the 40 man roster.
  22. Is there a level of performance where the Twins should retain their control of Sano for next year? I think I would focus on the strikeout rate, walk rate and exit velocity. Those were already better than career norms in April. They need to continue in that trend. His April launch angle of 31.3 isn’t going to lead to success and that must drop.
  23. Let me try to reframe my wonder. Is the value of putting yourself in a position to be a favorite in a playoff series worth the prospect cost of losing some trades in the long run?
  24. I don’t think it could possibly have gone worse. Maybe Eovaldi will be available.
