  1. Yeah, even if he comes back down to Earth, doesn't mean he'll be horrible. The best player in baseball only had a BABIP of .349 last year. Saying Santana may crash to a .330 BABIP isn't actually saying he'll be bad at all. Only 35 qualifying hitters did that well or better last year, two of them former speedy Twins OFs.
  2. In any given season only a very small handful of players end up with a BABIP of .380 or higher, if any do. No qualifying hitter in the majors did it last year. But I like your confidence, both in your prediction and him. GO SANTANA!
  3. Can we quote you on that 'around 380' BABIP? Plus or minus how many points? Due to his speed, I believe he'll have a better than average BABIP, but .380? Mauer has been a top notch hitting machine, and his career BABIP is under .350. Mauer has also only had ONE season in the majors where BABIP was at .380 or higher. Next closest was his MVP season where it was .373.
  4. Think we can find another team to fall in love with his career ERA? :-)
  5. No even slightly intelligent GM is going to tell his fans or the players that they take service clock into consideration when deciding on opening day roster. Means zip. He's 'been clear' about a lot of things during his GM time.
  6. He's saying .700 is respectable, not good or great. There are 15 teams and 9 spots in teh order for each team. That 135 spots. 131 players had 300 or more PAs in the AL last year, 85 were at .700 or better. So .700 is respectable. If you're looking at what the player with the 65th best OPS was with 300 or more PAs (65 being right around the middle of 131) it was our very own Eduardo Escobar with his .721 OPS.
  7. 'It's amazing he produces what he does (which should earn him no roster points).' We award him no roster points, and may God have mercy on his soul :-)
  8. There were 31 1Bs who logged 400 or more PAs, Mauer was 21st in wRC+. He was slightly below average. If he had reached his career wRC+, that would have put him in the top 10. If he had reached what he did in 2013 prior to concussion, that would have put him 6th.
  9. 'I think that we put way too much importance on who is on the 25-man roster for game 1 of the season.' Back in the old days, the 25 man was less important than nowadays. After going to 5 man rotations and so many relievers, you run out of bench options quickly. We should be concerned with every player put on the roster. MLB should expand active roster to 27 or 28 players. If that happens, then we can be less concerned about who the last player on the bench is.
  10. He had more pitches per plate appearances last year than our new RF. He also had more pitchers per PA than last year's batting champ/hit leader Altuve, all world 2B Cano, and now retired HOFer Jeter. His OF defense, well, he shouldn't be in the OF. Not defending him, just putting certain comments about his game into context.
  11. Well, we need someone who can actually play an above average defensive CF because our corners are, um, horrible. Santana does not come close to fitting that bill, so hopefully he won't be out there again (though I admired his effort out there last year, his defensive deficiency out there was not on him since he's an IF)
  12. There were only 12 qualifying players who had an OBP in the .380s or higher last year. So yeah, if he can do that, he's a starter for sure.
  13. The only good thing about '95-'01 was if I bought cheap seat tickets we could be down behind the plate around the 3rd inning :-)
  14. I care way more about the 162 (or 163) game season than I do about a post-season tournament. Obviously, I'd love it if my team won a W series once in awhile, but overall, it's about the season for me.
  15. One also has to wonder if we would have even made the playoffs in some of those seasons without Mauer to begin with.
  16. yeah, but we were talking about the Twins post-season record with Mauer on the team, no?
  17. I mostly watch Premier League (3-4 matches a week, Go Red Devils!) and am hooked hard on World Cup.
  18. Photographer Jeremy Olson. Hmmm, is he related to photographer Jimmy Olson, from The Daily Planet? :-)
  19. I think we should also give some credit to Plouffe for turning his defense around. He probably deserves the most credit. He's been working hard at it even before Molitor joined the coaching staff.
  20. Couldn't agree more. Wasn't bashing him, just agreeing he made a great play and then a bad one. We SHOULD talk about all of them, right, especially on a thread dedicated to wondering where he will play?
  21. It was an impressive play! Loved it! Then there was the ball hit right to him that he booted and then threw away. Should have been charged two errors on that one attempt, but was only charged one.
  22. This is the 3rd offseason that our starting pitching has been labeled as bound to be better.
  23. In fairness, I wasn't here when we got Suzuki, but I had issues with his whole game when we got him and continued to have issues as we extended him.
