  1. 'I'm curious about who he should have chosen instead. His other choices were Fryer, Herrmann, Rohlfing, and Pinto as I recall. And Pinto was not an option really. Because pitch framing :-)' your post here is funny because, yeah, Gardy didn't really choose Suzuki. Suzuki was put upon him by Ryan, so my use of the word 'chosen' was off. How about this: When your starting catcher is horrific at framing, maybe pointing out Pinto's flaws in framing might not be overly good because, apparently, the guy who signed Suzuki didn't care much about the skill to begin with?
  2. 'I''m just looking at it as Vargas > Mauer > Plouffe. So ditch the worst guy, shift the middle guy to that hole, and make room for the big guy.' Wow, the positionless Vargas in his 1/3 of a MLB season, is already better than Mauer? Mauer has an off year after a concussion. The season before he had a wRC+ in the 140s. Vargas (who is pure DH material) and his wRC+ of a 114 is already better than Mauer who nornally sits in the 130-140 area for wRC+ and can play some defense? And better than Plouffe, who can actually play a position and has comparable offense? Anyone remember Parmellee's first time in teh majors?
  3. So the scouts and the coaches who see real issues with his defense are ALL wrong? That would be interesting. Braun, with as great of an offensive rookie season he had, was so bad at 3B that he kept getting replaced in late innings and then was moved to the OF after his rookie season. Still a very valuable player but the Brewers knew what had to be done. On the flip-side, teams kept Reynolds too long at 3B, so between his horrible defense and the strikeouts, the HR and RBI couldn't sway people to believe he was great. If Sano is that bad on defense at 3B, and he could be, I hope the Twins move him to a corner OF spot.
  4. I think people enjoy the game in different ways. Maybe some like watching good-great defense. Maybe some think defense is much more important than some others think. Maybe some prefer baseball players who can play both quality offense and defense. Perhaps you just care about the home runs. That's fine. Telling people to shut up because you believe he will do the part you care about seems, um, intolerant. And I would hope the Twins would be smart enough to keep a quality player like Plouffe, but never know. I don't think he gets trade this season.
  5. Suzuki is horrible at framing as well was my point. Never heard Gardy or anyone else on the team point that out. According to Stat Corner and BP , Suzuki is even worse than Pinto.
  6. It's ironic Gardenhire pointed out framing considering who he chose as his starting catcher. Not that framing is important or has a real effect on runs allowed or anything :-)
  7. Tyler DuffEy went to a pretty well regarded baseball college and is already 24. I hope they move him through fairly quickly. He's got the traditional Twins combo going as well, not a lot of Ks and not a lot of walks. :-)
  8. I've not heard anyone say the best division in baseball is the AL Central. That's an interesting view when you consider the NL Central and the AL West. I, personally, believe there are two groups in our division. The first being the Indians, as the front runner , with the Tigers and Royals battling for 2nd and close to the Indians. Then there is the White Sox and then the Twins.
  9. We will see if he has a bounceback year in performance. I'm optimistic he will.
  10. List might have just been for qualifying OF. Santana didn't have enough PAs to do that. Santana's WAR was 3.2 and his wRC+ was in the 130s.
  11. I look forward to watching Lorenzo Cain breakout more (reminds me of Hunter's game during his first Twins tour) and I wonder what it would have taken to get Dyson from KC.
  12. I hate it when baseball players get the words wrong - Crash Davis, Bull Durham 1988 :-)
  13. yes, nothing sells a point better than bringing up a mother's basement :-) What parameters are you going to allow for the challenge? Do they all have to have nerd insults? ;-)
  14. I agree, the parameter you set (box score stuff, only) is pretty much useless for determining who the best offensive performers are, but it was your challenge :-)
  15. Info found outside of a box score might by useless to you, but that doesn't mean it actually is useless or that it's useless to people answering your question. You probably should have rephrased your challenge . Instead of just writing this: 'I also challenge anyone to name 10 American League outfielders who had better offensive seasons than Hunter did last year.' you maybe should have added, 'but when you do so, only use archaic information even though you know a good chunk of it doesn't really tell us much about the players actual ability.' I know it seems wordy, but parameters need to be set. :-)
  16. Because if you just look at just offense, add in leadership, and blow off defensive stats as hocom, the Hunter signing makes more sense? Heck, practically a bargain :-) And remember, he was worth over 12M in 2013. So it's possible he bounces back to that or close. I wouldn't count it out, honestly.
  17. In fairness, he said offensively. You used WAR, which incorporates the horrific and unreliable defensive stat called UZR :-) Psychics, Palm Readers, UZR... If you use wRC+, there are still 12 qualifying guys out of 27 that were better. If you go to 400 PAs or more, there were 41 guys in which he ranked 16th, so now we have 15 guys who had better offensive seasons. :-)
  18. Cuddy had to in 2011 with us :-( In any event, the best thing for good chemistry is winning. If you're getting pounded all the time for years, that takes it's toll and things aren't going to be all great in the clubhouse or dugout.
  19. For those who but into WAR, Hunter was worth 1.8M last year, hopefully we get closer to the 2013 version which said he was worth 12M+. http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=731&position=OF#value
  20. if you want the guy with the best OBP on the team not being in the top 3 of the lineup, then yeah. For me, when you add the overall OBP to that high wRC+ and #s with RISP, it still looks more like #2 or #3. To me, anyway. I like him #2 now, but I can see valid reasons why #3 still make sense as well. He fits both spots very well, IMO.
  21. How about his career wRC+ over 130 and career line with RISP of .330/.456/.479. I'm not advocating he stay #3, but those specific numbers might suggest it's not ridiculous to put him there.
  22. So, the head of umpires works for MLB, and they give the umpires the pitch f/x info that, by studying it, has caused the umpires to increase in strike zone that they call. The umpires do that cause they are graded on strike zone accuracy which can be determined by pitchf/x given to them by MLB. And knowing that, we can't conclude that MLB has directed the expanded strike zone (even if that means, hey guys, call the strike zone by the rule which you haven't been doing)? And now we have MLB saying that Ks are out of control and they are looking at shrinking the zone that has gotten bigger over the last five years, a zone that has coincided with the pitchf/x era.
