  1. We'll have to agree to disagree. I don't think the FO actually believed one season way out of the norm for him in regards to HRs was what he'd continue to be. At least I hope they would be smart enough not to think that. Getting his 3rd batting title wouldn't have been an outlier for him, he had one the year before and two times in the last three years going into 2009. A third batting title (in a 4 year span), which is three more batting titles than any other AL catcher in history, he still gets that contract. If not from the Twins, from someone else.
  2. Watching the Orioles/Pirates game on MLB Network and the announcers just got down saying, and I quote, 'We know that all of the Sabermetricians have put out numbers over the last few years showing how strike zones have continued to decrease in size' And then they said that maybe the umpires and league have read that info and decided to increase the zone. The announcers said they have talked about this all ST on their broadcasts. Thing is, the SABR people have shown the exact opposite to be true. That the zone has increased each year over the last 5 years. And the league has come out and talked about decreasing the zone, not increasing it. WOW!
  3. I don't think a person has to be one that 'always chooses to be negative' to clearly see that this team was not good last year. Seems to be an unnecessary jab at people who seem to have issues with a team that has lost 90+ the last four years and can say, 'hey, maybe there's a reason for that. main reason being, the team isn't that good.' Shouldn't the negative outweigh the positive when a team is that bad for that long?
  4. 'If I want to be charitable to the Twins this spring, I say their decision-makers really are convinced they were a good team last year but caught some bad breaks.' I SERIOUSLY hope they don't actually think that.
  5. I seriously doubt the FO actually believed that what they saw Joe do in 2009 was the Joe they'd continue to see. And, because of that, I doubt it played too much in what his contract was. I imagine if he had just a normal year for him he still would have gotten paid right about what he did. What some fans thought he'd do after seeing his 2009 is a different story. Outlying seasons are rarely what a player is going to continue to do. For me, he's had two disappointing seasons and both were because of injury (2011) or feeling the effects of injuries/concussion (2014). And all players get hurt. he is not unique in that regard. A lot of people point to games and/or played at catcher but part of that is on the manager too. Part of that, at least in the last few years, was Morneau not being able to play and Mauer being the best option for 1B, or not having a great DH and moving Mauer to DH wasn't a detriment in DH production. I mean, yes he's been hurt. no doubt, but he was also primarily a catcher and most years his games played were in line with what you'd expect from a catcher. I have zero doubt he could have played more games and more games at catcher too.
  6. It's even sillier to read my post and assume i was upset that you said Oliva is better. I said I don't understand what the argument would be to suggest he is, besides HR. I said, 'Mauer isn't below Oliva, and I'm not sure what argument would say he is.' And I'll also say, if Mauer got traded today (assuming he would agree and could be) it wouldn't bother me at all...I mean besides the talent we'd lose. I am not a Mauer fan, other than he's really good most of the time so it helps our team. He's not my favorite player on the team. He's probably not even in my top 50 favorite players playing right now. I also think too many people like to throw around the words: upset, ridiculous and silly too much when describing people's point's of views, but hey, whatever.
  7. I want the guys I believe will I have the best OBPs and wRC+ getting as many PAs as possible. That's almost always been Mauer on our team (of course 2014 is there and it happened and it's the most recent). He also posted a wRC+ of 125 in the 2nd half, so he's coming back around IMO. I think people need to have a better understanding of what is worth 23M in today's game (for example in 2012 and 2013 he was worth 46M combined based on what 1 WAR bought you on the open market) and that there is more than one way to create/produces runs besides what we were told forever. And I'm not sure your best hitter bats 3rd anymore. :-)
  8. OPS+ takes era into account. It's why, for those who like OPS, OPS+ is so good. Mauer's career OPS+ is better than all the comp players listed. Do you show something different in the time frames you've listed? And, of course, none of them endured the physical challenges of playing catcher. Mauer isn't below Oliva, and I'm not sure what argument would say he is. Besides the HR.
  9. I'll go .250/.345/.420. wRC+ 115. And his defense continuing to improve as he gets more and more comfy with the position.
  10. as long as he continues to have the best OBP on the team he deserves to be in the top half of the lineup. And I'd like to see if 2014 is the Mauer we have now rather than 2012 or 2013 Mauer before dropping him.
  11. Thanks for the info and nice WAR comp, do you know fWAR's same comparison? And Carew's
  12. A lot of people want to make sure it's perfect context (which is pretty much impossible to attain) only in so much as it hurts Mauer's case. Now we can wonder how close it would have been if those guys also had to play catcher.
  13. I think you are still missing the point. Maybe go back and read the discussion between Chief and I. We were just talking about the career slashline Mauer has. IMO, the slashline itself is awesome. I said if Joe can have his career slashline this year, that will be awesome. Or not, depending on point of view. He said that slashline isn't awesome. So I brought up similiar type HOF hitters who had those slashlines and still managed to be HOFers. Players most consider awesome players. Except Joe, apparently.
  14. We also might want to take into account Mauer did it while enduring the rigors of playing catcher while Carew, Oliva, Boggs and Gwynn didn't have to do that. In any event, thse guys were brought up because I talked about how if Joe could get back to being Joe with his career slashline that'd be awesome Joe. Then it was pointed out his slashline isn't awesome. So these HOF players (minus Oliva) were mentioned. Similar type of slashlines. Similar types of hitters.
  15. Chief and I were talking about Mauer's career slashline and how that's apparently not awesome. His career slashline is better than Carew's and Gwynn's. And we can add Boggs in there too. All these hitters were hitters like Mauer. And none of them had to do this while enduring the rigors of the catcher position.
  16. If 2009 Joe is what you need to see to say he's awesome then yes, he won't be awesome. That's easy. He was that guy once, which really means he's never been that guy in reality because extreme outliers don't give us a realistic view of what a player's level is. Tony Gwynn is going to be disappointed you don't think he had an awesome career. Carew too. Oh, and neither of them had to play catcher for around half their career while doing it.
  17. A better hitter than the guy who has won 3 batting titles and has a career line of .319/.401/.459. Our standards are pretty high for this guy. I think if he decides to force the issue in order to appease the masses he'll be a worse hitter. I'd rather let Joe be Joe. A healthy Joe is an awesome Joe.
  18. It says there are a lot of players in your league I'd like to play fantasy baseball with or that your league is small or the format is bad. Or that your players are easily spooked by one bad year. Most fantasy baseball leagues don't count defense other than errors. Many fantasy leagues will think Howard is better than Mauer. He's not. Fantasy Baseball formats often doesn't reflect reality on who is an overall good ballplayer and who isn't. Someone decides what stats deserve the most points which ones deserve too little, which ones don't have any value at all. Most go by the most traditional stats possible. Whether or not he's drafted or not by some fantasy players doesn't really tell us anything about what he'll do.
  19. Mauer seems to get pitched outside...a lot. If that continues, I hope he doesn't still try and pull the ball or we're going to continue to see an uptick in 4-3 putouts. or 4-6-3 DPs. Seems that's what he was trying to do last year as well.
  20. Have faith man, the Twins FO is doing everything right and there's always a way to justify that's the case. So sit back and enjoy the show. I mean, if you like 5 season repeats.
