  1. What percentage of drafted players make the major leagues? -- NCAA senior players drafted by a Major League Baseball (MLB) team: Less than eleven in 100, or 10.5 percent. -- High school senior players eventually drafted by an MLB team: About one in 200, or 0.5 percent. Just sayin' : temper your expectations...
  2. With the position players doing well on offense and defense, largely with youth, I recommend the same solution for the pitching staff as well. Start taking whatever lumps you need to absorb and get the process running.
  3. Done so after yesteday's game. 10-day disabled list with shoulder discomfort.
  4. I don't recall much about the Hicks promotion. But clearly remember the abomination in Houston, with both Berrios and Meyer. Travesty, is the best word I've got. Politest, fits too And I also recall the days of and outfield of Darren Mastroiani, Logan Schaffer and Shane Robinson. The promotion of Buxton was way too early. And WAY too needed. Self-inflicted desperation. On the daily players, I'm feeling very confident. Offense and defense much better this year. The pitching is a product still in development, and that's OK. OK, because there is a person in charge now that knows pitcher development, with a track record.
  5. Totally agree. People seem to be missing the point that this new FO got a late start and were playing catch-up. I don't quibble too much about Berrios choosing to play in the WBC over SP. Not sure if he took a hard look at what might happen with the Twins. Overall, worked out OK. If I remember correctly, the main thing the FO and Twins coaches were looking for from Berrios in the MiLB was consistency; repeatable mechanics. So far, so good. So, so very good
  6. At some point, the Twins do need to see what Mitch Garver and John Ryan Murphy can do in the MLB.
  7. If some of the young starters develop, they may be able to hang around .500. Which, in Twins terms, would be quite the victory. More to come!
  8. I've never really paid that much attention to Top Anything lists. It's a moment in time, and then the moment is gone. I think both Duffey and Tyler just need more time to build up arm and repertory before being committed to being starters. Adam Wainwright started off in the bullpen. Seemed to work out OK.
  9. I think Rosario comps to Puckett are way off base. Olivia seems like a good one.
  10. Great article! Twins are on the right path. This year, I'd be happy with anything close to .500. Expect much more next year, if better pitching can be found.
  11. Is it time yet to do something about Hughes? I mean, Hughes and Gibson: Talk about Twins!!
  12. Question on Melotakis: Is he a lefthander that can get righthanded hitters out? I'm not really big on the LOOGY thingy. Need more value than that to be on MY Big League roster! The Haley's and Belisle's, etc. of the baseball world are around for only one reason: you need them around to pause MLB advancement for RP's that aren't quite ready. And they're disposable. I'm guessing, if the Melotakis and Burdi's of the world stay healthy and keep improving, they should be up in a couple weeks. Unless, of course, the Haley's and Belisle's of the baseball world crash to earth a lot sooner...
  13. Well, I don't give Gibson that much credit when he allows 6 hits and 4 walks in 6.1 innings. Not to be mean here, but hope he can drive up some value so he can be traded for something respectable. Thou the Twins could really use another guy that can rack up innings, Gibson seems to be trending in the wrong direction. Don't know if this is a fair comparison or not, but here we go: Berrios dominated AAA.
  14. Nice article, Nick. The whole "pitch to contact" angst always confused me. That's been a standard strategy for a long, long time. Except when you have lousy pitching. Still need to see more of Berrios, but his recent start was a good start! Santiago recent start was, well, what is was. Need at least one more good starter. And I don't know where that player would come from. Trade?
  15. Finally get to see Buxton hit. Been missing the games for a while...
  16. Sano BOMB! That's the kind of thing you should be do against a weak pitcher like Tomlin.
  17. Embrace the gut! I say it's time to send Hughes to the bullpen to get straightened out and, now that Berrios has been called up, call up Mejia too. Seasons change. And this one is headed towards the AllStar break! LOL
  18. Among all the things happening this year, the Eddie Rosario story has been pretty well ignored. To me, he's just damn fun to watch! If they're good, the age of the pitching staff is meaning less. Then there's the other side :-) I'm concerned about the ages of the MiLB pitchers? Should I be? At 26, I would have expected one of them to have at least a moment in the MLB, instead of retreads from other teams. Please tell me if there's really a plan. There's a lot of good things to say about the current team and the advances from last year. Personally, I'd like to see more. Greedy?
  19. So, Nick, sounds to me that Berrios has made a transition from a thrower to a pitcher. Sound about right? This is what I've been preaching about Berrios: The first will get you great numbers against MiLB hitters. The 2nd will get you MLB success. Very Greg Maddux-like... Looking forward to his 1st MLB start of the season!
