Monday’s are as good a day as any for a rant so while I’m in the mood - Joe Mauer. Overpaid, that’s not his fault. But you’d think the guy would feel some sort of accountability to at least pretend he’s a leader. He’s rarely seen (on camera anyway) coaching, encouraging, or even socializing with the young talent, always smiling and joking around with the opponents however at 1B regardless of how many runs they’re down by, generally seen at the back hi-five lines the rare times that they do pull out W’s, and appears to be incapable of all human emotions whether it be joy, frustration, pomp, or anger. I’m a long time Mauer fan but he seems to be a terrible leader.

Here are the two most recent headlines regarding the Twins on MLB trade rumors. "Twins “100 Percent Committed” To Terry Ryan" & "Terry Ryan Offers Support For Paul Molitor." Cute.

I think the entire organization ought to be gutted, from FO, to coaching staff, to overpaid vets that have nothing to offer the future but I would settle for just one of those things. My sense is that any change will continue to be of the Casey Fien, Robbie Grossman variety though, just messing around on the fringes. Don’t want to be disloyal or make anyone sad ya know….

I don't think folks are flip flopping so much as recalculating their POV's after things shake out one way or the other. Sure no one is right 100% of the time but I didn't see a single media entity (outside of MN anyway) that had the Twins ranked above the bottom 3rd of the league. So baseball people outside of TD were also quite skeptical of the roster and no one has said that they themselves are more capable than TR, Molly, etc. so much as that there has to be better options if ownership would actually consider looking for them, which of course they won't.

Speaking of fundamental issues, why can no one on this roster lay down a decent bunt? I've been slow to criticize the coaching staff because they're a likable cast, some of which I was a fan of when they themselves were players, but, there are so many things this teams is awful at....

Article: What To Do With Phil Hughes?
troyhobbs replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
TR has a history of buying high on guys after 1 good season despite remaining yrs on their contracts and their suspect resumes....Doumitt, Hughes, Suzuki, Dozier. When your team is terrible and your farm system is strong these extensions are unnecessary IMO. I remember when Willingham had that big first season with the Twins that what they were asking for him was "laughable" as described by other GMs and he went on to be pretty crappy for his remaining tenure in MN. The organization just falls in love with some of these middle of the road vets and can't let go.... -
I agree with most of this plan but would try to get Sano out of RF asap in this lost season. Meaning that I'd also get rid of Plouffe asap to accommodate. Clean house come August and fill in the gaps in the off-season. Although Suzuki is more likely to get another extension than TR is to blow up his veteran roster.

Article: Where Are The Prospects?
troyhobbs replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Position wise I think they'll have enough prospects pan out, pitching I'm not so sure. A couple years ago a rotation of Meyer, Berrios, Stewart, May, and Gibson sounded more promising than it does these days. Their future is fine but they need to stop clinging to stale veterans and commit to rebuilding. Despite all the miserable seasons they've never blown things up yet.- 71 replies

The Twins success was pretty flukey last year. Not surprised to see them come crashing back down to earth. They need to shed those salaries and get some legit SP (and RP for that matter) before they'll ever have a chance. Ryan has whiffed on a lot of FA's and much of the talent he's aquired in the farm system has been with early picks in the draft as a result of losing so many games. I don't question Molitor's baseball knowledge, but do question TR's ideology on a regular basis. 5 yrs into his rebuild and he might have his worst team yet....

Shoulda traded Plouffe and kept Hicks or got someone who can play OF. SP isn't good enough to cling to vets in favor of promising youth in the hopes of building a mashup "win now" lineup IMO. Not that the Twins can't be decent but they won't be great with that starting 5. Not a fan of Sano in RF.....or Nick Punto's bat back in the day.

Article: The Offseason Of Trevor Plouffe
troyhobbs replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Still don't like Sano in RF. I like Plouffe but ideally he or Sano should've moved to 1B and Mauer should be gonzo if they weren't going to move Plouffe. Agree with the poster about a make or break year for Mauer, seems like he's the elephant in the room with all the line up tinkering -
Article: Like It Or Not, May Is Bullpen Bound
troyhobbs replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Hate it. Your best arms should be logging the most innings. He's arguably got the best stuff on the team, not sure why you'd want to cap that by stuffing him in the pen. -
Article: Did The Twins Give Up On Hicks Too Soon?
troyhobbs replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Agree. Trading from an area of strength to fill an area of weakness. Sure Hicks is probably the more talented player but it's still less risky than overpaying on a longterm deal for an average C on the FA market especially w/ all the fat contracts they already have on the payroll -
Not entirely against it but don't especially like Sano in OF. More injury risk and he's never played out there. Move Plouffe to RF or trade him and get a real outfielder.

Steep price tag but I'd consider taking the risk. Pretty thin C market and they need an upgrade there if they plan to make a playoff run. They could still use an ace even more so unless they plan to throw more money at a true #1 SP I would gamble on Weiters, has just as much upside as downside.

True. Sorta assuming Hunter breaks out of his funk soon. My personal feeling is when hunter is up I feel like there's a chance he'll get on base and eventually get back on track where with Buxton I'm just hoping he puts it in play and/or sees more than 3 pitches. But if Torii continues to scuffle, then ya, stick w/ Buxton, you're right. Definately not advocating more PT for Robinson.

Article: From Key Cogs To September Call-Ups
troyhobbs replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Baseball is a hard game that not a lot of young players play consistently. Their long term potential isn't any less than it was last year and only time will tell if they can make the necessary adjustments to be successful big leaguers. I think they're both talented enough to have nice MLB careers once they put it all together. -
Article: A Couple Outs Short: Twins Lose 5-4
troyhobbs replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Agreed. Buxton is the one to bench when Hicks is back. He has way too many bad at bats and you know things are bad when you're being pinch hit for by Chris Hermann (kinda sad he's the closest thing they have to a MLB backup C...yikes). Hunter is slumping but at least he makes the pitcher work a little bit (usually) and hopefully he finds his swing again. That Sano moonshot was sick, total BS he only got a double out of that.- 13 replies

He also left out Alex Meyer who has taken a big step back this year but could potentially get it back together by next season -
Article: Twins Bullpen Showing Signs Of Life
troyhobbs replied to Brandon Warne's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Ok, if they make the playoffs it's because TR went out and boldly got missing pcs Jepsen and Cotts and moved arguable their most talented SP to the bullpen. -
Article: Twins Bullpen Showing Signs Of Life
troyhobbs replied to Brandon Warne's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If the Twins do make the playoffs it'll be despite Terry Ryan not because of him. All of the credit should go to the coaching staff and the players. They'd probably still be leading the playoff hunt instead of chasing if Ryan would've been more aggressive at the deadline. Sano has put the team on his back and bailed out TR on some pretty shoddy general managing IMO. -
Article: Nolasco Stuck In No Man's Land
troyhobbs replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm not for cutting Nolasco but I wouldn't put him in the rotation just because of his salary either. Maybe he can find something as a RP or if some other sucker wants to make a trade for him, even better.
