Article: Miguel Sano's Defensive Future
troyhobbs replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Ya,it was the month of May and Sano carrying the team on his back the 2nd half of the season that made the difference, they were clearly not as close to being good as their record indicated last season. Not that I would've predicted they'd be this bad but plenty of folks were leery about last season's "success."- 106 replies

Article: Teaching Patience (At The Plate)
troyhobbs replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It'd be interesting to get Bruno's take on some of this. Does he look at the same scouting reports other teams are using against the Twins hitters and having them work on adjustments or does he just say "see the ball, hit the ball," "keep battling," "you are who you are," "rah rah," etc.- 61 replies

Article: Miguel Sano's Defensive Future
troyhobbs replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If this is the one positive that comes out of this season I'll take it. Sano in RF was a terrible decision. I would've genuinely questioned TR's sanity if he ran him back out in the OF.- 106 replies

Article: Oswaldo Arcia And The Limits Of Patience

Thank God. Was hoping Sano didn't factor into the supposed logjam of MLB caliber OF's on the roster. -
Article: Oswaldo Arcia And The Limits Of Patience
troyhobbs replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
My main concern with this move is does it mean that they're still considering Sano an OF? Woulda made more sense to me to send down Park (or a pitcher or trade an aging veteran past his prime) and put Arcia in at DH until Sano comes back and make Park earn his way back on the roster and move Sano to 3B finally. It sorta looks like they're fixing on keeping Plouffe around and continuing the Sano experiment in RF. Concerning also to consider what they plan to do with Polanco so they can keep Dozier around.... -
Article: Twins Designate Oswaldo Arcia
troyhobbs replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
25 years old is not all that old in baseball. Look at Dozier and Plouffe's age 25 stats for example, yet they eventually became serviceable players. Maybe the Twins didn't lose that much by DFAing Arcia but why give up on a young man with good upside when you have so many other bums you could exercise options on? Probably because the Twins brass didn't like the guy, as others have alluded to their popularity contest style of management. If your a nice guy with a bland personality and little to no charisma, you're in. If your flashy with the slightest bit of attitude, you become very expendable.- 267 replies

Pretty sure this move is also a strong indication that they plan on running Sano back in RF when he returns. Apparently Plouffe ain't going nowhere and look for a Robbie Grossman extension coming soon, right before he reverts back to the real Robbie Grossman.....- 267 replies

Article: Eddie Rosario Is Raking In Rochester
troyhobbs replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Good point. I still believe he's had enough success that he ultimately belongs on an MLB roster though. His speed and defense put his floor at a decent 4th OF in the MLB. -
Article: Eddie Rosario Is Raking In Rochester
troyhobbs replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Max Kepler is arguably now the Twins' hottest prospect and Rosario's minor league numbers are better than Kepler's so no reason to give up on the kid this early. I believe he's always been a bit streaky throughout his career so I'd give him another shot real soon. -
In 2012 I think Willingham could've actually brought in something pretty decent and a lot of people thought they should trade him. I don't think anyone wanted Suzuki and the Twins countered the rest of the league's disinterest with an extension. Hughes was the only bright spot on a terrible rotation in '14. I wouldn't have traded him either because you need someone to pitch and they had him at a reasonable price. You probably won't find that too easily in the off-season. Of course the extension was unnecessary as has been hashed out here before. If I was GM I wouldn't waste my time shopping around a guy who is very affordable and likely won't bring in anything of value to the future but if something comes along that is good then, sure, take it.
-
He won't bring in much, is cheap, and profiles nicely as a bench player. Since he can play multiple positions he can get playing time without blocking any of the young guys. Someone has to sit the bench and better a replacement level veteran than a kid that would be better served playing everyday at the minor league level. If they trade him for some project that may never make the big leagues then what is the point? That being said, I don't think anyone would flip out if he was traded.
-
His versatility and skill set is perfect for a bench player that can be plugged in to a few different starting positions without much drop off even when he's not having his best year as a pro. I think he could still be useful for a few more years too and his speed is especially valuable. If they trade him fine, but there are several other players I'd prefer to be dealt/unloaded before Nunez.

Article: The Benefits Of Badness
troyhobbs replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The FO would have to commit to grabbing a couple anchors for the rotation in the off-season, not exactly TR's strong suit. If the Twins had more going for them it might be worth hanging on to Santana but he's not vital to the Twins' future. I'd dump him and replace in the off-season but wouldn't mind holding on to him either for the reasons you've stated if they didn't plan to sign up some help over the winter. -

Considering how sterile the FO has been w/ transactions in their past 90+ loss seasons there is not much reason to believe this year will be any different. -
He's 29 yrs old so it could be that he's having his best year as a pro because he's in his prime and he's learned a few things. I wouldn't expect the ladder to go any higher though, although some guys are late bloomers and he's never been terrible. I've always liked the move to bring in Nunez and defended him even more than I was comfortable doing so advocating him for the 25th roster spot over Hermann last season. A lot of posters hated Nunez a year ago and I never really understood why.
-
Exactly why the Twins should've gone for it last year and made a bigger splash around the deadline than just adding Jepsen. You never know what the next year will bring and nothing is guaranteed.

Article: There I Go, Turn The Page
troyhobbs replied to Steven Buhr's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
All good points that have been hashed out on TD before. It's like the whole baseball community gets it except for the Twins FO. If they put Sano back out in RF when he returns all hopes is lost in this organization (of which there is already little). Ya, I didn't think they'd be this bad but there were plenty of dubious decisions made (this off-season AND in years past) that become pretty glaring in hindsight. There is only one professional franchise that would accept these kinds of results without drastic repercussions...and still have the audacity to charge $10 for a beer to boot. -
Don't think they can afford to trade Gibson or E Santana as they have nothing MLB ready in the cupboards. I don't think anyone cares how Nolasco is sent packing just so long as he's gone and Hughes might be better off in the pen but not sure they have a better option at SP than him either. Until they have some legit pitching it matters little who they run out there in the field so might as well be the young guys. If you can't take pennies on the dollar for your veterans then let them sit on the bench.

....yeah....not a lot of trade bait here but plenty of bad contracts on this roster and if anybody heats up they're more likely to get an extension than they are to be dealt.

Don't forget about the power signing of Sean Burnett. If Burnett can string together a few good games I'm sure TR would be pretty tempted to lock him up on something like a 5yr $20 million contract or something sneaky like that....

I don't think it matters what they do with their roster at this point. They got nothing on the farm that is MLB ready that could remotely salvage this season. No one that is tradeable besides, Santana and Plouffe maybe. Just eat contracts and do whatever it takes to get all the bums off this roster by next year and hope the young guys make some nice strides for next season.

Some aspects of leadership can be practiced and learned (though I agree a lot of it is natural) but the point is more that it's another thing working against the club, that the face of the franchise is not a strong leader like other clubs might have the benefit of. Not that it's the biggest thing but just another thing.

You're right but if I were paying them $23 million I would certainly appreciate the effort.
