Article: The Impending Rochester Rotation Crunch
drjim replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I personally expect him to pitch pretty close to what he has the last couple of years. But considering the state of the rotation and the dearth of readily available options to acquire, I think if he makes 30 starts at 160 innings of similar performance that is easily worth what he is about to get in arbitration.- 102 replies

https://www.baseballamerica.com/international/wagner-mateo-signs-with-arizona-10012/#YwCe45jAmJH5j1et.97 This is the comparable. Cardinals voided a contract with Wagner Mateo in 2009, he later signed with Arizona and flamed out pretty quickly.

One other thing I found out digging into this is that if the Twins sign Marte after voiding a previous contract he is immediately eligible for the Rule 5 draft if not placed on the 40 man roster. I also found out I was incorrect. The contract was voided, so it must have been signed before the physical. I figured there would be an agreement a contract would be subject to a physical.

What are you basing that on? The deal was voided months before it was clear Ohtani was coming to the majors. It just became public when prospect writers were discussing total international space available. But if true, it would be a moral problem and it would backfire going forward in the international market.

Because it is a much more acceptable risk for the team at a much lower number. I don't think he *can't* play baseball, just not very likely to be successful at higher levels with his vision situation. I know you realize all this.

He didn't sign a contract, he had an agreement that was voided because he failed a physical. This isn't unprecedented in international guys, even this exact situation. They wouldn't be foolish enough to void this contract without cause for a really small chance at Ohtani. Wouldn't be worth the future blowback in that market. Looks like there is even a small chance that they might sign Marte for a reduced rate.

It is definitely a win. They received real assets for the space they traded away. And what they got seems to be in line with what the space goes for in other trades. Once the Marte deal fell through, they did have limited options, and it is not outrageous to take a pass on all of the Braves prospects.

Twins aren't a charity. They probably shouldn't go all in on a guy with vision issues.

Keep in mind these rankings have not been updated since last offseason. They "update" the rankings by slotting players in as drafted/acquired, but they don't re-rank them until late January. Baddoo will be much higher this year.

Considering the other options, once the top 2-3 Braves prospects came off the board, it was probably worth it.

It's important to note the mlb rankings are not updates for year end yet. Both of the prospects acquired have dropped. They are probably as good as 8 or 9 of the 12 Braves prospects set free, but there is another Cuban prospect available better than all of them. Twins were good to grab some prospects but they are leaving some talent out there.

Especially Pearson. He was bad in rookie ball and had an injured shoulder. He's got a long ways to go. -
Neither system is great either. Doubt either prospect is top 30 for Twins. Still makes sense.

That may be true. But they should probably focus on getting three pitchers before they worry about getting rid of Gibson. I would still say last year showed that they can make the playoffs with Gibson in the rotation. Probably don't want him starting in the postseason though.- 102 replies

So you want to have three holes instead of two? Gibson is not great by any means, but it is a cheap contract and there are not a ton of alternatives floating around. It's a no brainer gamble for the Twins to take.- 102 replies

Something that could also happen (not saying it would work for Slegers), is moving to the bullpen will lead to him dropping a couple of his secondary pitches and focusing on the best one, leading to it playing up in shorter stints, in addition to an uptick in the fastball. But I wouldn't do that yet for Slegers, he will be needed for early starting depth.- 102 replies

Article: The Impending Rochester Rotation Crunch
drjim replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I haven't dug into Minor a whole lot, seems mostly injury related, but I think generally a good profile for a starter to really good reliever transition is having a plus second pitch and not much of a third and fourth pitch. Probably more important than a couple tick jump in fastball. I imagine the lag time is due partly to figuring out the transition. This is one reason I would potentially be in favor of Romero making the switch, but I think it is also smart to give him one more early look at being a starter. The rest of the guys just seem like long men in the pen if they cant make it as a backend starter, not much of a plus pitch anywhere.- 102 replies

Is that a worse outcome than if he had been rushed up two years, likely not pitched well, then likely been dfa'ed this offseason after missing a ton of time due to injury? If he was good enough, they would have protected him on the 40 man.- 102 replies

You prefer they get hurt their rookie seasons and expedite their clock so they can reach arbitration without having contributed much of anything? These college arms aren't sitting in the minors for giggles. If they had the stuff and command (and health) locked down to be effective in the majors they would blow through the system.- 102 replies

drjim replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Well, then there is no real disagreement on Thorpe. I expect him to start in Hi A this year, blow through it, and perhaps even make it to AAA. He's not going to be ready to start in the majors on day 1 in 2019, he won't be built up with enough innings to make it effectively through a season. But he should absolutely be developed in a way to throw significant innings in the majors in 2019 (assuming he's good enough), with perhaps an eye towards having him finish the season in the rotation. The Gonsalves example is a development of talent issue, not a speed of promotion issue. And moving ok starters to being a reliever quickly is not a "risk", it is just bad asset management. But I agree pushing a guy like Thorpe too quickly would be risky behavior.- 102 replies

No disagreement here, would be nice if the Twins had better pitching prospects closer to the majors. Sprinting the handful that might ultimately develop that way to the majors is not really a solution, it's a recipe to continue the problem.- 102 replies

Thorpe just turned 22 a couple of weeks ago (and had TJ surgery). And they examples you cite are some of the best pitching prospects of the past decade. The Twins don't have that in the minors, no argument here.- 102 replies
