  1. I'm skeptical that the front office is all that different in how far they are willing to stretch. They might be wiser with resources and might have some relationships that help them close the deal, but even Terry Ryan would notice they had financial flexibilty (he was instrumental in creating it!) and a need in the rotation. Fangraphs and mlbtraderumors had the Twins pegged for a significant starter addition.
  2. Just a small point - Hughes, Castro and Pineda are also guaranteed money in 19, and ESan has a pretty reachable vesting option.
  3. Twins should have no problem pushing to $135mil if a Darvish deal is on acceptable terms (especially years). I'm not much of a fan of multiyear deals for free agent relievers, but it does seem like they got a good deal compared to earlier signings.
  4. For good reason, Gore has the tools to be a true ace. I think the tradeoff is a little less ceiling for significantly better probability. I can go either way, but don't mind the "safer" pick at #1 and then hitting upside guys in the next couple of rounds.
  5. I have two great memories: this game: http://www.fangraphs.com/wins.aspx?date=2003-06-22&team=Twins&dh=0 It was his first year in the bigs, playing in Milwaukee, came in as a pinch hitter and put one about 500 feet into the scoreboard in center field. Lots of Twins fans there, outdoor game on a gorgeous day and we were going rowdy. The other was the two run bomb he hit off Zumaya in Detroit in 2006 (this game: http://www.fangraphs.com/wins.aspx?date=2006-08-09&team=Twins&dh=0). That seemed like the key moment of that pennant chase and Twins never looked back. Remember watching that in a packed bar in Uptown, high fiving random strangers.
  6. I don't think Sano is all that powerful. However, he is wealthy and famous, which is the only we even heard about this. Sadly, I don't think Sano's behavior is all that rare. I do support it being exposed and increasing awareness and hopefully leading to change. I'm unsure what the author wants the Twins to do. Big picture critiques are the easy part.
  7. I was talking in the aggregate, not individuals. I don't fault Washington for having slaves. Lots of rape, affairs, violence (as in murder), financial shenanigans, dirty campaigns, etc. I suppose my comment was more a statement on societal progress overall than a criticism of earlier politicians.
  8. Considering the champion wasn't bullpenning and basically ended up with no relivers they trusted at the end, I'm not sure the strategy is completely set. I think it's a little overstated. I do agree costs will rise, but that it's also a fool's game to chase them in free agency. (I actually was on board with signing a more established reliever for multiple years, but after more research I changed my mind). I support this method of bargain, short term buys and throwing numbers at it more than dollars. That said, the money "saved" needs to be invested in at least one starter, if not two, and perhaps a bat too.
  9. I will say, these two signings are steps up on last years signings. Which, admittedly, is a low bar.
  10. It's not clear there was a great option out there. Certainly there were *better* options, but not clear they are good investments considering the years. I'm glad they passed on Davis at that price and years (assuming it is instead spent on a starter).
  11. On the aggregate, politicians today are the most moral our country has ever had. I doubt it's even close. We tend to focus much of our energy on the high profile exceptions (*cough* President *cough*).
  12. On the bigger point, I think moving on from viewing athletes as heroes as one moves from childhood to adulthood is probably normal maturity.
  13. It's also been shown that athletes are much less likely to commit crimes and be arrested than males their age. What Sano did is really bad, but (sadly) isn't exactly shocking behavior from a 22 year old male.
  14. There is the pattern which was likely. I wonder if there will be other assault accusations. It's all bad, but physical assault is another level.
  15. I wonder if these rumors mean Sano is more available than we think. If they did a Sano for Archer deal framework, and backed it up with signing Napoli and (say) Todd Frazier, that might be an interesting plan. Could still sign a FA pitcher too.
  16. Not a sexy signing, but it's probably the right way to build a bullpen. Throw a bunch of numbers at it, don't get locked into multiple years for non-elite guys. I expect some minor league signings too. The key is to use the saved resources for actual starting pitchers. As long as the starters remain unsigned I assume the Twins get one of them.
  17. Exactly. And it wasn't like there wasn't need last year either. Once he wasn't called up, it was pretty obvious what they thought of him. The front office could be wrong in their evaluation, but a handful of games in the majors wouldn't have made a difference.
  18. A long look at Johan from Jay Jaffe. He might sneak in, just going to take 20 years. http://amp.si.com/mlb/2017/12/21/johan-santana-hall-fame-ballot-2018?__twitter_impression=true
  19. Rodney is the only one for one year. All the rest are 2 years or Rockies. But none of the big guns have signed yet. Maybe the Twins can wait it out. I think a decent reliever or two might drop to 1 year.
  20. This hasn't actually been true for the past 2 champions, or most of the recent champions outside of KC in 2015. An elite bullpen is nice, but not required, and throwing tons of resources at it, despite the poor return historically, is probably not a good strategy.
  21. The problem is that based on recent data/experience, seems about equally likely they would have to fix it again next year even if they signed a guy for 2-3 years.
  22. They definitely could have done better, but it is pretty hard to know who for sure would be better (outside of the top 2-3 who will get the really big contracts). Rodney seems as good a bet to be good as any reliever who has signed so far.
  23. Probably about half, right? With most of the rest (of that tier) in the $9mil AAV bucket.
  24. All indications are that the Gophs secured a solid recruiting class. I can't stand listening to Fleck, I thought the university did Claeys and co wrong, and I thought the coaching/performance this year was garbage - but there is a fair chance he solidifies the progran in a couple years. I wonder about the upside. Is it Mason/Kill or can he actually go higher. Will always be tough with the limited (and likely shrinking) talent base in the state.
