An opt out is bad for the team. It gives them much more risk with much less upside.- 195 replies

Article: The Darvish Contingency Plan

I agree it doesn't matter, but you pretty clearly implied they made an offer they already knew was beat. That's an interesting assumption. I personally don't buy that players won't come to Minnesota. Lots of free agents sign here! I think it was a mistake for the front office to play this up the way they did, I don't know what they hoped to gain (and it's especially bad if they don't sign one of the other 3 main pitchers). I do think there was reason to hope that the big markets wouldn't go 6 years or opt out, but if LA and Chicago really wanted Darvish, Twins weren't going to outbid them. But I don't agree with you it predestined that this was the outcome, just that the odds the Twins would get him was small.- 195 replies

Yes, injury or bad performance and then being stuck with the backend is a worse case scenario. But part if that risk is mitigated by the chance that the player performs and stays healthy and you keep him locked in at a reasonable contract. I agree with the second part, that was my point. It would be a great outcome to get 2 years at a high but reasonable rate. An opt out puts all the risk on the team and removes most if the upside. It stands to reason a franchise with ~50% revenue/payroll advantage is more willing to take on that risk.- 195 replies

In Levine's defense he is right. Opt outs are terrible for teams. Much easier for bigger markets to take on. But if the Twins aren't willing to put one in, they aren't going to get the best free agents. You actually described the best case scenario not the worst.- 195 replies

I would think it gets it done, if you add same incentives and opt outs. -

Good question. I never thought they had much of a chance to sign him, similar to Ohtani.- 195 replies

Article: The Darvish Contingency Plan
drjim replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Taking a step back: 1. Really hard for Twins to outbid large market teams (who can eat dead years much easier). 2. Hard for the Twins to go 6 years on a really good, but not elite starter. 3. Darvish signed with a better, more competitive team, in a bigger market, and in the easier league. Bigger contract aside, seems kind of a no brainer.- 195 replies

Article: Johan Santana Elected To Twins Hall of Fame
drjim replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
How else would we the Twins have ushered in the Drew Butera era? That was by far Ryan's worse year (and not coincidentally his last of the first run). Selling was a defensible move, but they should have gone all the way and set the team up for more sustained success beyond 2010. The half measures allowed Torii to walk for squandered draft picks and significantly decreased the Johan return. Plus a few other bit pieces that could have fetched a little something. -

This is possible, but woild probably require Javier to really emerge as an elite bat, as well as Lewis. They do have depth of potentially solid propsects but the system is light in elite (or even potentially elite) guys. -

Agree. I'm on board with every part of the plan outlined in the tweet. I find it very likely Romero ends up in the pen. If Pineda comes back too, they could have some serious power by the end of the year.- 105 replies

Easily my favorite Twin since the World Series teams. Would make plans to get to the Dome on days he pitched. -

May is likely to be a starter. Start on the dl, stretch out in rehab starts and be ready to join the rotation at some point. They are not going to cut him unless his recovery goes really sideways.- 105 replies

I don't think the role of closer is overrated in the regular season. It strikes me as very important to have set roles and rhythms to maximize performance over the long haul. This can be occasionally stretched and flipped around, but it would be tough to keep it up for 6 months (playoffs are a different story). I really like the idea of locking down Rodney for the 9th, with Reed/Hildenberger/Rogers/etc available for matchups. I do hope they are more creative than Rogers/Hildenberger 7th, Reed 8th, Rodney 9th. But I don't mind having a set 9th and working backwards. It is actually shaping up into a nice pen, with some decent guys to fill it out, and multiple guys with options that can shuttle back and forth as needed.

Really good article. "You guys are all the f****** same" really is a statement to ponder. I don't have a ton of compassion for someone who keeps feeling burned doing the same thing over and over again, but the other thing that struck me in this article is that we may really, finally, be seeing a shift from the woman having to do the vast majority putting the brakes on, to now men will have to. A good, positive societal shift.- 189 replies
