Article: The Impending Rochester Rotation Crunch
drjim replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He might surprise, but Slegers as a reliever really wouldn't profile as anything more than a long man, or possibly the 6th guy in a pen. What would be the hurry to push him to that, especially when he does provide depth to the rotation, especially early in the season. Outside of him and Gonsalves, no one else in the article is really prepared to step into the rotation for the first 2-3 months of the season. I could get behind the plan with Romero, but it also seems worth exploring whether he can stay on as a starter, because the potential payoff would be so high.- 102 replies

If he is a top prospect (like I think he is), I don't think he'll even need 8-10 starts. And I agree, if he is at Hi A longer, it will take a lot of the luster off his prospect status.- 102 replies

Article: The Impending Rochester Rotation Crunch
drjim replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
So you propose a worse development strategy? And are you sure other teams are calling up younger players at some accelerated rate relative to the Twins? I follow prospects and call ups pretty closely and this seems to be often repeated and way overstated (and more likely just flat out wrong). To the extent young guys come up, such as Berrios for example, it is because they are good AND stay healthy. Perhaps Thorpe should get through a full minor league season before we become too concerned about his contributions to the big league club.- 102 replies

I would say Slegers is much more likely this year to contribute positively to the big league club. Obviously not long term. Upper minors should absolutely prioritize depth for the major leagues, with A ball focusing on development. I don't really see the rush with Thorpe, he can get his feet wet this season in Hi A without it causing any development issues.- 102 replies

I agree. Would be a really aggressive push for both of them to start AA. With the lack of the full season, probably makes sense to ease them into the year. If they dominate early they can be promoted pretty quickly. Certainly there will be some movement ahead of them in the system.- 102 replies

Outside of Gonsalves there would be no problem with anyone else starting in AA. But admittedly moving Slegers back would be pointless. If the front office does it right, Mejia should start in AAA too.- 102 replies

Article: Sho Time: Could The Twins Really Land Ohtani?
drjim replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
They're going to sign Cobb, a couple of the non top-tier relievers, and a veteran bat on the cheap and it will be a masterstroke that Terry Ryan could not have pulled off. -

I hope they have a plan for the $3+ mil. Hopefully they do both. -

Article: Falvine Ready To Flex Muscles
drjim replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I have pretty much moved on from complaining, other than when the dialogue continues. My main point I made in this specific thread is that Falvine haven't really done anything other than misjudge the talent on the roster relative to the rest of the second tier of the league, as seen by not being aggressive enough last offseason to bring in better free agents nor at the deadline. There is a lot of chatter about how the front office is going to do this or going to do that. They might, and they should, but right now it is all wishcasting. We don't yet know how good they are at acquiring and evaluating major league talent. -

They more or less admitted they made a mistake in all of the interviews that followed. And they were actively trying to add relievers in August. These are not the words and actions of someone who was strategically trying to sell while still anticipating getting bounced early. And to put it more directly, screw adding marginal prospect arms if it would put a playoff berth in jeopardy. That is a terrible tradeoff for a professional baseball franchise to make. This is especially true with the Kintzler trade/return. I can accept that they followed a process and made a mistake, but I would be way more offended if they thought they had a really legit chance to make the playoffs and decided to flip a couple pieces because they figured they wouldn't make it very far anyways. -

Article: The Twins Should Be Shopping Ervin Santana
drjim replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Money certainly is a factor for the team overall, but the specific money owed Santana isn't going to be what stops them from getting an ace. That's all I'm saying. -

There is certainly a lot of wishcasting on this front office. Though I suppose the article could be an after the fact defense of Terry Ryan's talent acquisition.- 36 replies

Santiago got hurt, doesn't seem particularly relevant to that point. And Santana shouldn't be considered an ace, why would we judge him by that standard? They can acquire a better pitcher and keep Santana. -

The $14mil going to Santana isn't the limiting factor preventing the Twins from getting an ace. -
Article: Falvine Ready To Flex Muscles
drjim replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It was not a "calculated risk". The front office sold the impending free agents on the roster with value because they didn't think the team would make the playoffs. It's fine to say it worked out in the end, but I can assure you that if the front office knew how the rest of the season would shake out, not only would they have kept Kintzler and Garcia, but they would have added at least another bat, if not also another reliever or two. -
Article: The Twins Should Be Shopping Ervin Santana
drjim replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Only 15 starters in baseball hit 200 innings last year. I think people are taking for granted what significant accomplishment this is and how it is far from a sure thing he'll hit it again even if he stays healthy. If he hits 200ip he is an easy keep at $14mil. -

They traded away productive pieces from the major league roster for prospects that couldn't contribute the rest of the season and replaced those pieces with lesser players from inside the organization. Isn't that the definition of a sell? I agree it wasn't blowing things up and rebuilding for a couple years down the line, but it was absolutely a sell. -

The Royals rebuild was stalled out? If the Reds really want a veteran stabilizer, there are a handful of guys they can sign for a year that will cost less than Erv and not involve a prospect. They'll likely perform worse, but that doesn't strike me as a critical concern this season. -
A good place to start is Sickels rankings: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.minorleagueball.com/platform/amp/2017/10/24/16537288/minnesota-twins-top-20-prospects-for-2018#ampshare=https://www.minorleagueball.com/2017/10/24/16537288/minnesota-twins-top-20-prospects-for-2018 Fangraphs also does future value, Baseball America does a combined future value/risk profile.

It's a small part of your point, but Bellinger was a top 10 prospect in all of baseball going into the 2017 season. Most of the people talking about adding Bellinger to a Dozier deal were being snarky.
