Pondering a Nelson Cruz Reunion
Whitey333 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I love Cruz but the fact is he isn't needed at this stage for this team. Twins need pitching help foremost. Let's concentrate there -
Great win Twins. Let's sweep them on Wednesday! Hope Rocco uses a common sense regular lineup to face Lance Lynn. It's our chance to bury the Sox. No one needs a day off when they whole team is off on Thursday. Besides Joe Ryan deserves to have his regular fielders behind him. Go Twins!!

Ranking the Twins' Top 5 Hitters By Level of Trust
Whitey333 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
How you could put Correa ahead of Arraez is strange. Arraez should be 1 then maybe Correa 2. Buxton at 3 is too high. He hits home runs like 22 at this point. His RBI is low for that many Homer's. But his part time status and his .227 average moves him down the list.- 16 replies

Twins offense not that great this weekend. Glad they won 2 out of 3. People on here that keep telling us one game doesn't matter is kind of true. But those losses add up to maybe missing playoffs all together. Rocco's inability to be a manager has been shown the past couple of years. His game plan stubbornness and inability to do in game adjustments is appalling. Making sure Buxton gets one of his many days off and then not using him as a pinch hitter in key situations is becoming the norm. He is much more concerned about his game plan than winning. That is obvious. Don't upset the analytics and spread sheet. I will agree that Buxton is not a good pinch hitter and may not have mattered. But we surely don't know that do we? It is possible the computer that predicts everything could be wrong couldn't it? Or is this all MLB has become? Just a huge boring video game? And how can the players be tired. They get plenty of time off from the manager. Where else can a part time player like Buxton be congratulated for missing over 20% of games and not used when the team could use him. I've said it many times. I hope Twins win the division. In the likely event they do not Baldelli will be mostly responsible.

I don't see much help from any of those pitchers this year. Injuries were way too serious and why push it and possibly make it worse. Four inning Archer could be moved to bullpen.

Yes nice come from behind walk off win. Thanks Byron and Luis!! It helped to wipe out another bullpen blown game this time by Thielbar. Nice for twins to walk off for a change. We still need pitching help especially bullpen. Great game by Ryan

Miguel Sanó’s Looming Return
Whitey333 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think it's time to move on from Sano. Yes he's streaky and the fewer and fewer hot streaks he has doesn't outweigh the many more poor streaks he has. When he comes back it's time to trade him for whatever you can get. The Twins have been very patient with him. But enough is enough. -
Yes these two could turn out well. Keep in mind that those who think they may blossom in the next 12-18 months, they could just as easily fail in that timeframe. As good as these prospects are purported to be Toronto gave up on them. A prospect is just a suspect until he proves otherwise.

Guardians 5, Twins 3: We've Seen This Ending Before
Whitey333 replied to David Youngs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
So who's fault was it that Thornburg had to be left out there to get hammered? Baldelli and FO. If the bullpen was used up who overused it? Baldellis continued overuse of a bullpen, albeit very weak, is what caused this situation. Not getting your starting pitchers stretched out by now to pitch into the 6th or 7th inning is inexcusable. This in turn puts way too much stress on a bullpen that looks burned out already. I've said all along and I still maintain that you cannot continually use 3-5 bullpen arms every game. It is simply not sustainable. Four inning Archer shows some nice stats except he pitched them in low stress innings and doesn't pitch more innings. The starting staff has and is just average. They are now below average because of teams inability to stretch them out. The season is half over, they should be stretched out by now. FO has done very little to nothing to improve the situation. Where are they? A couple of the pitchers on the staff could be DFAd easily. If you don't have anyone at AAA that can help them you will need to trade. If you wait until the trade deadline there may not be much reason left to try and improve the team this year.- 103 replies

Rocco is a poor excuse as a major league manager. Certainly not every loss is his fault or is every win attributable to him. But he is the manager. He sets the tone for the entire team. He is the face of the team. His poor in game management and inflexibility is astounding. The team is near the bottom in defense and baserunning. They have catchers that have no chance of throwing out would be base stealers. Twins don't manufacture runs. Yes at times you need to do that to win games. We are at or near the bottom in stolen bases with a team total of 13. They don't know how to bunt or advance runners. These are issues with the manager. I've seen too many players not hustling out ground balls and balls they hit to outfield. Jeffers getting thrown out at second the other day because he jogged half way to first is just the latest example. That falls on the manager. A player may get 3-4 at bats a game. If he can't hustle each of those at bats out he shouldn't be playing. The decision, again to rest Buxton and Correa out of the same lineup is ridiculous. That is the managers fault. There isn much of a reason why Correa couldn't have played and then give the $35 million player off Thursday. The FO is hugely to blame for not bolstering the bullpen. They need to upgrade the bullpen now and not wait until the trade deadline. By then it may not even matter. We should remember these blown games against Cleveland as blown opportunities to beat up on contenders. Very frustrating. This team IMO has a chance but needs some obvious help now.

Truth is Baldelli is a horrible manager. He has no in game managing skills. Common sense would tell you not to send out pagan to start the inning after all the blowups he's had against Cleveland. The guardians must have been salavating when they saw him enter the game again. Maybe laughing. Yes Baldelli didn't have a ton of choices but ANYONE other than pagan to start the inning. And the FO doing pretty much nothing all year to try to improve the bullpen. Had pagan and the bullpen done their job the Twins would be 8 in front instead of 2. So many lost opportunities. Remember these games when the playoffs may be missed this fall due to Baldellis stubbornness and his loyalty to Pagan at the expense of the rest of the team.

Great rebound win in game 2 after another heartbreaking blown game by Pagan in game 1. It will be interesting to see what if any moves the FO makes as the trade deadline gets closer. The team has holes that need filling but how far will/ should FO go this year? At this point the Twins are doing well to be in first place. We've blown many games this year and I look at blown opportunities. Twins should be another 3 games ahead. Plus the division is very weak again. So it's hard knowing how good this team could be. Last year the White Sox walked away with the division beating up on bad teams including our Twins. This year the Twins seem to be taking advantage of some bad teams in the division. Good for the Twins. If we make the playoffs it's likely we won't stack up well against other playoff teams. I hope we finish strong but I'm thinking 2023 could be a super year with a legit super team. Go Twins!!

Baldelli has blown so many games this year he's catching up to Pagan. Pagan blew two games to Cleveland just last week. But Rocco insisted on sending him back out again. Same team, same result. Not surprising. Just keeps showing how shaky the bullpen is. That part is on Falvey. This game, and that 11-10 losing debacle to Cleveland last week may look huge at the end of the year. Another good game by Smeltzer. Where would we be without him this year? Remember he was the best starter we had in spring training. He was sent down to start the season. This FO has made some very strange roster moves this year. Yes we are still in first place and yes I'm happy about that. But I look at where we should be given how we have blown so many games. Instead of 2 games in front we should be seven or eight. A lot of missed opportunities

Very nice complete victory. Gray did great job of saving bullpen!! It will be interesting to see how twins perform and who's playing and not playing for today's doubleheader. One of the most unpredictable twins teams in recent memory. Never quite sure what team is going to show up. I hope we sweep today. Go Twins

Buxton is usually very good when he plays. But his inability to stay on the field has been troublesome for 7 years and continues as expected this year. Four inning Archer should have been extended more by now. The year is half over. Maybe using him as an opener is working I don't know. Just not sold on him yet. If he was signed to be a starter then he should be going 6 innings by now. Big Cleveland series. Twins need some serious depth from Gray tonight to save on the bullpen for Tuesdays doubleheader. With so many holes on this team it is amazing they are still competitive

Would Bringing Back Kyle Gibson Makes Sense?
Whitey333 replied to Sherry Cerny's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I like Gibson and he would be an upgrade to the starting staff. But it takes 2 teams to make a deal and I don't see much reason why Phillies would trade him at this point. They need him if they are serious about contending this year.- 28 replies

Pitching Coach Wes Johnson to Abruptly Leave Twins
Whitey333 replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I was very surprised about this development. Twins must not have been too upset with him though. After all he's staying until after the Cleveland series. Maybe a lot of teams would have just shown him the door when he said he was leaving. But I guess with all of you amateur lawyers we would have realized if the twins did that it could constitute a firing and thus paying his full contract. The fact is the Twins have plenty of coaches on the payroll now. They will promote someone through the end of the season I suspect and hire a new one this off season. Although the timing and professionalism may be questionable I believe it's not that significant. -
Is Defense Part of the Twins’ Problem?
Whitey333 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Well written and thought out article. Defense is important and in my opinion, with no stats in front of me to support said opinion, I believe Twins are just an average to below average fielding teams.- 67 replies

This is one of the most puzzling and frustrating Twins team I've seen in many years. Last year's team was rotten all year long. You knew what they were and they played poor baseball. This year's team teased you at times thinking they are good. Then go for long stretches playing awful baseball. As a fan we have no idea where this team is headed or what direction the Fo will take us. Plus we have a manager incapable, and unwilling to make in game changes and adjustments. Let's be honest here. He's got to be amongst the worst "manager" in the game today. Plus we have a FO that spends 35 million on one player but basically nothing to staff a bullpen. Also if the great Buxton is unable to play (again) why not put him on the DL so our beleaguered manager at least has another option on the bench. IMO this team is strangely managed from top to bottom with weird lineups, inflexible managing and a too deep dive into analytics and ignoring common sense.

Glad twins won. Not a great game but ok. Bottom line is Twins lost two out of three to Cleveland at home mostly related to our bullpen. Again the offense was missing. One day they score a ton then the next day they almost get shutout again. If they aren't going to use Duffey and Thornburg even when they are well rested they need to be gone. They are dead weight. Tell Baldelli, then to quit complaining about not having enough bullpen arms if he isn't going to use what is available. It's hard not to be discouraged after losing 2 of 3 to Cleveland. You don't get rewarded for being close. This is MLB. Bottom line your goal is to win. The Twins have a losing record the past month and have not played all that well. And who isn't sick of all the Buxton bs? Yes he was hurt. That's the bs I'm talking about. It's been going on for 7 years. He's injured way too often and not dependable at all. If he's hurt he needs to go on the IL. He is just becoming dead weight when he can't play. Put him on IL and get someone up who can actually help out and thus give our " great" manager another bench option. It's also frustrating to hear Rocco complain about the 13 pitcher limit rule. As I recall it is a major league rule for all teams not just the Twins.

Great comments guys. Here's my two cents worth. Yes the bullpen needs help. It needed help from the beginning and especially after we deemed it necessary to trade Rogers. How did that work out? But the starters have to go longer and be more productive. I know it may come as a shock but a starting pitcher going 4 innings and throwing only 65 pitches while giving up 2 or 3 runs, is not good starting pitching. As we can see the bullpen l, while below average to begin with , is now getting worn down. As I've said the bullpen pitching half of every game is not sustainable.
-
Do Not keep Correa. If he wants to leave, let him go. The caveat here would be to use the 35 mill you are paying him to spend on some pitching. What good is a 35 million dollar player going to do for you when it's likely your pitching and manager are going to keep you out? U like Correa but for a smaller market team on a budget it never has seemed to make much sense.

OMG my second posting today. That game has me upset I guess. Yes I would have been one to rip Duffey if he had been in there and given up the lead. My contention is that if you aren't going to use him because you don't trust his abilities, why is he on the team. At that point he is taking up space. That is the issue I have with Duffey. He should be traded or DFA if you cannot trust him enough to use him. I knew the bullpen was being overworked and it's just a matter of time before it caves. It also goes back to the starters inability to pitch longer. My god the season is almost half over. Most of your starting pitchers should be stretched out by now. This should have been foreseen a long time ago by the FO.

The Twins Could Pay Byron Buxton, Again
Whitey333 replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Oh please let's get over Buxton. I agree that when he was mashing home runs nothing was mentioned about his knee. Also when he strikes out 3 times in one game and doesn't come close to hitting anything, his knee is hurting. How convenient. Buxton is hurt again. He will continue to get hurt the rest of his career. He's great at times. Sometimes super. But he is basically a well paid part time player that you can't count on day to day.
