  1. Not sure how much I trust Hildenberger right now. As the radio team was pointing out, the Orioles were trying to give up an out (sac bunt) and he couldn't throw a strike. I like him, he'll be fine (I hope) and part of learning to win is learning from losses. Rosario may have made a blunder; I have no idea. Going purely off my gut, it felt like he showed up to play, and has achieved veteran status. I think he becomes a bigger part of the heart and soul of this team moving forward.
  2. Astudillo played third base today...surprise 25th man? I can see him pitching as well. Imagine him throwing strikes to home plate while looking at the third baseman.
  3. Huzzah! Excellent choice. Let me be the first to offer my congratulations to Tom.
  4. This is perfect. Berrios gets the honor of being considered for the opening day nod, without the pressure and potential soul-crushing responsibility that goes with it. A (hopefully) steady vet gets the nod instead. Lynn opens the next road series. Seems like a good way to prevent any major long losing streaks to start things off. Really, the early schedule looks fairly winnable. They could be like 11-3 when they get to Puerto Rico and Cleveland.
  5. Front offices have been returning several Rule V picks in recent days. I have full confidence that this FO will do the same if needed based on performance, and will not persist in putting their head in the sand hoping to somehow save face. According to the teams evaluators, Kinley and Moya have outperformed Busenitz and/or present higher upside.
  6. Some guy at Yahoo who get's paid to write basically said the same thing as Brian, but not as well. I think if we weren't living in a statistically enlightened age, with an Internet that allows us to mercilessly dissect every move and non-move the Twins make, I would feel even more confident. I think that 25 years ago, armed only with a glossy special preview issue of Sports Illustrated, my less evolved brain would arrive at the conclusion that the only thing the Indians have that the Twins don't is last year's division championship. And, like Brian, I have a hard time counting anybody out, even the Royals. Maybe the Tigers. The Astros appear to be a an Uber-team, and I was going to make an Uber comparison here, but that would be tacky given recent events. Without knowing the team well, I scratch my head wondering why the Mariners are considered contenders but the Rangers aren't (not just here, other writers seem to list the same teams.) I'm Mariners fan by default, but this team doesn't do much for me; reminds me of the Tigers a year ago.
  7. I thought maybe they'd give Adrianza a look and keep Escobar at utility, but I was wrong. I'm glad for Escobar, he's practically my favorite overall guy on the team.
  8. I wonder about this as well. Kind of weird to juxtapose my imagined picture of Jorge's trainer with the trainer that Lynn, Morrison, Kinley, etc worked with; the one that was featured in an article this weekend (sorry; no link.) Maybe the U.S. based one's just have more undetectable stuff...
  9. I appreciate Falvey's response. Family members make mistakes. Between how foolish he already feels and the 80 game suspension, I neither feel sorry for him, nor wish to pile on. He made a mistake. Move on. It helps that I believe his agent--he does seem like a really good guy. Its easy to cast stones, but considering my perhaps unfounded high opinion of Jorge, I am certainly rethinking my attitude about steroid users. For now, I will believe that he (very) foolishly misplaced his trust in someone whom he believed would help make him a better athlete.
  10. Like Molitor, I thought Adrianza hit the ball more than I expected. This is based on my murky memory and not hard facts, so TWAGOS. I don't think he is going to be any kind of all-star, but I think he can outhit Florimon. Luckily, it appears Florimon will be in the majors as well, so we'll be able to start that thread when appropriate. For those pushing for Gordon, let's not forget his brother is a recent suspensionee as well. This means absolutely nothing, of course. Not sure why I bring it up, other than to note the weirdness of it. I guess all middle infielders can't be strapping, 40 home run hitters...but they'd sure like to be.
  11. At this point, I don't believe in the "B-12" argument either. Given the extreme poverty some of these Latin guys come from, I'm not sure how much I even blame them for taking the risk. I don't condone it, and he deserves the penalty; just saying I'm not casting stones too hard. I've got a family to feed too. Disappointed nonetheless. This is Adrianza's chance to seize a starting job, and I am bullish on him. Seems to me, unless they are ready to promote Gordon at the first injury, Aybar will make the team. Putting stats and/or reality aside, I'm not opposed to adding his veteraniness to the mix.
  12. Awesome work, Seth. Thanks for providing this in "print." I don't have time in my life to listen to podcasts, I can read faster than I can listen, and I appreciate the links and pictures. Weather looks gorgeous!

    Excellent. Thank you.
  14. Nice. Fun to see the actual person, after all of these months parsing the numbers. I wish they would have gotten him for a couple seasons!
  15. He didn't take very long to shake off the rust...Tillman on the other hand...
  16. I'm on board with this. Could be a paradigm shifter.
  17. Severino didn't fare well in that game either. If it was all four vs. all four, I'd have to prefer the Twins rotation over the Yankees to be honest. Anyway, this is a solid bunch, and I think we have 162+ games of meaningful baseball coming up.
  18. Is it coincidence this news broke about the same time the Twins were busy scoring 9 runs in the first? I imagine that Levine texted Lynn after about the third batter with the offer, and Lynn texted back something like, "if they can bat around without making an out, I'll sign it." Seriously, though--while having a winning team may not be a prerequisite to signing these types of deals, it certainly can't hurt. If a guy is going to "settle," I guess he can still take solace in using his free agency to choose to go somewhere he thinks he can win, and join a positive environment. Rather than overpay/outbid for a guy who maybe doesn't want to be here, I think moves like they've made have an unquantifiable chemistry bonus as well.
  19. I like what all these "lesser" signings bring to the field. Team chemistry already seems like it has the potential to be special--their are some real characters on the team. I watched a Lance Lynn post-game interview mashup, which was funny. Listening to Dozier mic'd up was excellent--if I were on the team, I think I'd miss the guy if he left. Good chemistry is the chicken to the egg, so I'm not suggesting it is responsible for winning, but having a bunch of hungry vets + hungry youth seems like a good combination.
  20. While we all know spring training saves and wins are pretty meaningless, they are still a notch above orange slices and participation trophy's, and I see no harm in throwing out some accolades. I can remember when I had next to nothing to list on a resume; I've only recently been able to finally bump "Reserve Champion Showman in Beef at the Jerome County Fair" from my resume. As far as the OPP/Quality stat, boy that is pretty reductive. Drew Butera is a 9 or 10 on it, while Ronald Acuna is a 5 or 6. I'm more interested in hearing what Molitor had to say about Littell, and I'm also intrigued by Romero's exclusion from this list.
  21. There should be some kind of stock ticker like deal, where the value of these pitchers fluctuates in real time. A few seconds after Anibel Sanchez gave up a three run homer, you'd see the line LLYN +3...ALCO + 2.5...etc. In millions.
  22. Louis Opatz's excellent article about Zac Grannitte over at TT notwithstanding, I find myself agreeing with the Grossman-as-Larkin narrative. I mean, on a truly juggernaut team, you have Manny Machado on your bench. But in non-exhibition situations, it seems like in today's baseball, a patient, professional switch hitter who can pinch-hit in tough situations is a pretty valuable commodity. In a pressure packed playoff game, I can much more easily imagine him coaxing a rally-sustaining walk than I can envision Vargas actually connecting for a homer. Chemistry is overrated, but then again, I see Grossman as a guy well-suited to a bench role; a guy who only needs 10 AB's to get ready in the spring should be able to perform without much playing time needed during the season! Along those lines, Granite is perfect to stash in AAA as well--not a top prospect that is going to get bitter, but a hungry guy who will be ready when his name is called. The Twins' first "window" is this season. A significant reboot away from the leadership of Dozier/Mauer/Santana is looming. The trade deadline will be interesting, not because of what Dozier might yield, but rather to see what prospects this shrewd-yet-risk-averse front office might give up to make a push with this old core.
  23. He's been the Robin to Sano's Batman ever since they signed. Here's hoping he gets a chance to play a significant part on this team for the next few years. Can he play third base?
  24. If someone gave me a lottery ticket to scratch off in nine months, and said it was guaranteed to be worth between $18 and ??? Million Dollars, I'd say I was excited about that. Even if it meant I had to move to another state for a few years.
