  1. Sorry. A bad joke went under your feet, actually. I think I was thinking Diaz was eligible for the Rule V this year maybe. Great reports--thanks for doing this. I have to remind myself that some guys aren't surging because they've been consistently good all season, which makes Kiriloff's surge all the more impressive.
  2. Just two eye-poppers I noted: Moran's insane K rate. Lewin Diaz has not walked in 28 days. Maybe he needs to go to Ft. Myers to reboot? Oh...isn't he on the 40 man?
  3. "Adalberto Mejia! Zack Granite! Kennys Vargas! Remember those guys?" Yeah! They were solid (or potentially solid) contributors who have not contributed jack squat. Its almost like the whole organization is pressing. All three of them had/have openings this year, but instead of being ready to next man up it, they weren't. Granite is obvious, but if Vargas was simply mashing and not striking out a ton, I could see him getting a shot right now. And Meija, well, some excuses I guess, but he's been jumped by a lot of guys. Anyway, glad they had a good game.
  4. I get and agree with your point, but the three guys you mention could be getting their own resets three years from now. Sano was an All-Star just one year ago. Even though it seems like it, its not just Twins' prospects that flameout. The Rangers aren't so different from the Twins with Profar.
  5. Wow. Not even sure where to post. I'll go with the front page. I'm still finishing up listening to the Doors' "The End/Apocalypse Now" post that Jerr (I think) made on the game thread. Does Ft. Myers have a blue bus?
  6. If you accept (you shouldn't have to) that the offense is just putrid, than this game is evidence to me that the Twins just don't have "it" this year. Every decision available to Monitor is a tough one. I doubt even he was ignorant of the fact that Reed is not right, but he rolled the dice anyway and came up snake eyes (that's bad, right?). Pressly is equally overworked too, remember, and that turned out okay. If he'd brought in Hildenberger for the second day in a row, that would have been wrong. What were his choices? A 'brilliant' manager would have known Pressly was going to be fine, and used him in the eighth, and Rogers (or Busenitz...) in the seventh. A brilliant manager might have disregarded the naysayers on the internet and gone straight to Belisle in the eighth. I credit Molly for at least having faith in his guys. He let Berrios work through some tough spots. This offense needs a shot in the arm. Actually, it needs an arm replacement. This "team" just doesn't feel like much of one. Dumpster diving last offseason seems to have worked better than what they did this year, shopping at Target for President's Day sales.
  7. While I hope Sano's single portends better things to come, it will also serve as a useful footnote when assessing the Twins' record in one run games this year. I wonder what their record is in games where they've been able to tack on that all-important insurance run.
  8. Comments I've seen on this site in the past: Busenitz had a flat fastball/shaky peripherals; the league will catch up to him. He's Slamma-ing AAA pitching. Moya gets by on a deception. My own observation: Curtiss has shaky control that gets exacerbated under the limelight. Shoot, last night he wilted against the Yankees...affilitate. Duffey is what he is. He'll be good, he'll be bad. Sometimes happy, sometimes sad. Right now he's mad. Bard is the Matt Belisle of the young turks--couldn't cut it in a contenders pen. Listen, I don't actually dislike any of these guys, and I think they all deserve a(nother) shot. They may be more talented than Belisle, but I'm not convinced they'll perform better. At any rate, this seems like a move driven by or done on the behalf of Molitor. If that is the case, it will be a mark in his ledger, one way or the other.
  9. Quite a few guys are heating up or moving up. I too am concerned about Lewin. Great game for Balazovic. I was checking box scores on my phone and accidentally hit the "log" button instead of the "box". I could tell from the log he had a lot of strikeouts (and a good game) but wasn't sure until I saw the line.
  10. I think when it comes to "makeup" (not the kind you put on a pig) Sano and Buxton have their own, different issues, but in both cases the effect is the same--lack of production. In Buxton's case, he overthinks, and Sano might just be the opposite. Those are very broad generalizations. I have faith both can become productive players, in time, but I am not counting on either to suddenly start producing--especially because one of them is on the DL currently. Going out on a speculative limb, and not armed with quotes, it seems like the Twins have emphasized makeup in a lot of their more recent draft picks; and that might be in part a response to what we've seen with the B and S show. I don't want to be seen as overly disparaging of either guy. Each has seen formidable hurdles pop up in the last year. I personally don't underestimate the psychological toll that injuries, off-the-field legal issues, and the weight of high expectations can have. I think the thing that I hope for, that could happen right now, is for Dozier and Morrison to go on a tear (along with the cylinders that are already hitting.).
  11. Two years ago, the Twins were bad--but not as bad as their final record seemed to say. They (collectively) managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, and went through horrible collective slumps. This year feels similar in many respects, with the one-run record as the notable symptom. Last year there was much ado about chemistry and veteran leadership. This year I sense the same dysfunctionality as before as two years ago--no "chemistry" and the team rarely seems to be firing on all cylinders. It's almost like the team performs on a macro level as Dozier does on a micro level--season long team wide slumps versus Dozier's half season slumps. There can be nothing more frustrating than seeing every spark (Romero, Gibson, a huge game from Rosario, etc.) summarily snuffed out.
  12. Grossman seems like a decent fit at lead off. I would love it if Cave started putting up Aaron Hick-esque numbers. The Angels seem like they made Romero work. On one of my live gameday look ins, between chores ( I got a lot done this weekend--thanks for being mediocre, Twins) he was just finishing up an 11 pitch walk to Trout. Or did it end with a hit? Yeah, it did--the count was 2-2 for like 7 foul offs in a row. Well, I'm going to try and keep an even keel with this team. Yay.
  13. Well, if nothing else, I'll be able to remember this as the "Catcher Draft." Kind of like the "Power Reliever-To-Starter-And-Back" Draft. Always convenient to come up with simplistic labels. Fun to see Larnach homer in the playoffs last night.
  14. I believe Buxton and Sano can continue to improve, and maybe even lead this team to the promised land. I also believe that a big reason the team is struggling this year is because they have not yet reached that point...for a variety of reasons. The two beliefs are not mutually exclusive.
  15. Happy Anniversary, Tom. Wow, Gimmy to Escy a year ago. I guess that team had some ups and downs too. Having a baby in the house is a weird deal. Exhausting in many ways, but it also forces you to be home a lot and if you're home, might as well get some stuff done while they're napping. Anyway, I love these game wraps. Thanks for doing it. Great game to celebrate one year with. Boy, how about these Twins! I'm going to enjoy the ride to 80-82 wins and a sniff of the division title. Some days like yesterday, some like today. There will have to be at least one hot streak in there as well. Until these guys hit their stride and play like a 100 win team every day, I'll join right in with the griping. Infuriating as they are, there is a lot to like, and they have at least earned our hope, if not our trust.
  16. Oh, this team. Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me like, I dunno, 12 times, and shame on me for believing they are contenders. I'm changing my mindset for now, at least until the 13th time, and just treating this team like the science experiment gone bad that it is. Fascinating to watch.
  17. No matter which way you slice it--injuries, coaching, attitude, whatever--I think the expectation was for these guys to explode this year, and instead they've fizzled. With the core melting down, what do we do now, Scotty?
  18. Fun to see Lewis and his power surge. Not that I put too much stock in it, its pretty cool to see guys rise to the occasion on special days, like their birthday, or when their family is in town.
