The newly improved bullpen? Well, at least Romo has looked good so far. Count me as one that's still a bit nervous about the effectiveness and stability of this bullpen.

The Twins are having an historic year offensively. Very, very impressive. They could, and should, win the division. But beyond that? I fear we won't get past the first round of the playoffs once again. I just don't think we have the pitching quality (starters or relievers) to compete with the top shelf teams. Sign. Same old story.

Front Page: Twins Acquire RHP Sam Dyson from Giants
Doctor Wu replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I like the addition of Dyson to the bullpen ... but not convinced that that getting him and Romo was enough to make the pen a top notch one that is going to get us far in the playoffs. But hey, at least it's something and things could have been much worse. A lot of quality bullpen arms and starters out there who weren't moved, so there's that in the equation too. But my first thought when I saw the details of the trade was one of dismay; giving up 3 quality prospects seemed like a lot to pay for a relief pitcher who isn't even considered a closer. Okay, I know they weren't top 10, or even top 20 prospects, but I liked each one of them and I'm sorry they are gone. But ... we got a live arm, and Dyson isn't just a 2 month rental, but a player who'll be with the team next year, so that's a comfort But please please please, ... don't let this turn into the second coming of Matt Capps.- 206 replies

Gyro spin? Man, it seems like I learn something new every time I visit this site! What I like about this signing is the fact that Romo DOES match up well against the Yankees. I think, or I hope, that the front office is targeting pitchers who can specifically match up well against potential playoff opponents such as the Yankees and Astros. I liken it to the strategy that Presidential candidates use in national elections (okay, I realize this is a reach, but bear with me!):It doesn't matter how much of a percentage of the national vote you have, you need to capture the electoral majority of certain states to win, and that's where your focus needs to be. Thus, I think it would be a savvy move by the Twins to target pitchers who are Yankee-killers, or who at least match up well against the other possible playoff teams.

Very good article. In an ideal world, we wouldn't have to give up any of the top prospects we have. ones that we have been following and reading about and rooting for. But hey, that's the reality of the game, as we all know. You always hear people saying that "You have to give up something to get something" and of course that's true, but darn it, it's going to hurt when we lose some of those kids.

Another player catching my eye in the recaps lately is Prelander Berroa. Not sure what his overall outlook will be, but I love that name!

Fun to see Jaylin Davis continuing his recent hot streak. Has he turned into a real prospect at this point?

Article: Royce Lewis Promoted to Double-A Pensacola
Doctor Wu replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
My thoughts exactly. I can't see a Buxton trade at all. And any value that Romero had has plummeted this season. -
My first thought was: why trade for Romo when Belisle was available. Okay, that's a stretch, and a poor comparison, but like many others I'm hoping that this is not the only bullpen addition that the Twins make this month. I didn't view Romo as the playoff-type stopper that we need in the pen, but on further reflection I like the idea of getting a veteran with playoff experience, and his track record in that respect is good, Plus, he certainly HAS been pitching very well in the past month or so. If he's riding a hot streak, let's make sure his seat is a comfortable one.

Article: Twins Won't Rule Out Trading For Lance Lynn
Doctor Wu replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Seeing as how the Rangers are unlikely to make the playoffs at this point, the thought of the Twins possibly picking up Lynn crossed my mind earlier in the week ... and I immediately dismissed the idea as ridiculous. But .... I could see it happening. I don't want to see it happen, but it wouldn't shock me. But hey, if they want another starter I sure hope they are aiming higher. -
As surprisingly good as the Rangers have been this year, I doubt they will make the playoffs. Based on their history in the Daniels-era, the Rangers will most likely try to trade Minor for prospects. I would love for the Twins to have him. I think he would be a great addition to the rotation. And he still has another year on his contract, right?

Looking over the top prospects list I was reminded of Akil Baddoo and his injury. Apologies if this question was answered in a previous thread: I assume he's out for the rest of this season but what's the timeline for his return next year?

Looking at the Prospects List, at #15, Matt Wallner is a name I don't recall seeing before. Or at least I never paid any attention. What's his story and why is he rated so highly?

Article: Handing Out Minnesota's First Half Awards
Doctor Wu replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'd have to agree with that opinion, which is something I didn't think I would be saying a few months ago. I know that most on this board thought the Cruz signing was a very good one at the time, but I had my doubts. An aging slugger approaching 40 years old? How much can he have left in the tank? Well, quite a bit it looks like. I'm happy to have been proved wrong about my less than enthusiastic reaction to his signing. And hey, that Martin Perez signing looks pretty good too!- 13 replies

This whole team has been a bunch of surprises, pleasantly so. the glow is still there! As you noted, it's good to see Buxton cutting down on his strikeouts. And hey, he has 42 RBI at the break, a very impressive stat for someone batting at the bottom of the order. I only hope he becomes more than a .250 hitter.

Yeah, the Twins should have had, or maybe they still will, another player or two in the All-Star Game, but I also agree with your "give them a rest" idea. Most of the starters seem either tired or banged up at this juncture and few extra days rest might not be such a bad idea.

Nice report on Adrianza. As you noted, he wasn't even hitting his weight the first month or so. I wouldn't have been surprised if the team HAD released him at that point. But hey, patience is a wonderful thing, and he has certainly rewarded the team's belief in his abilities. I knew he had been hitting much better in the past month, but I'm really astonished at the big numbers he's put up during that stretch. Probably not sustainable, but it sure is fun is see him playing well.

It seems like every time I read about Jaylin Davis he has done something good. I know he's not considered a top prospect, but would he be a guy that could fit into a utility role on the big league club, maybe like Jake Cave, in the next year or so?

Reading this part: Bryon Gandy, the Twins 32nd-round pick out of Lurleen B Wallace St JC Ha! I wonder how many out there even remember who Lurleen Wallace was? That mention really brings back some weird memories. Sweet Home Alabama, indeed!

First time I have noticed the name Luis Rijo. Hmm. ... some impressive stats in these recent games. What would be his approximate prospect ranking at this point? Is he a pitcher to keep an eye on?

Good to see some positive results from Lewis for a change. But yeah, it's been a struggle for him this year. Let's hope he's shaken off the rust, or whatever the problem is/was, and starts producing like he did last year.
