  1. Very good article, and some interesting responses too. I've always thought Thorpe had lots of potential, but until I read this piece I wasn't aware that he didn't truly have an "out" pitch. Hmm. Hopefully, the pitching coach can help him to work on his slider, as some of you suggested. And yeah, he''s still young and doesn't have a lot of mileage on his arm after the long rehab period, so I'm still optimistic.
  2. Another very good interview Seth. Very interesting to read his comments about the injury and the long road back. Not a player I was familiar with before, so this helps my overall knowledge.
  3. An exciting young pitching prospect? Let's be patient and hang on to him! From everything I've read so far, he could turn into a solid MLB pitcher in the coming years. Please, please, please let this happen ... and happen with the Twins. .
  4. I'm not convinced that either is 100% yet either, but then again we still haven't started spring training. And as much as I like Astudillo, I'm not sure he is the best Plan B as a starting catcher either. I'd rather see him as a backup or in a multi-position utility role, or even as DH on occasion.
  5. Generally, I tend to have the same opinion; spending big money on multi-year contracts on relief pitchers is playing with fire. That said, Kimbrel seems like a relatively safe bet. I wouldn't mind the Twins overspending on him.
  6. I can't help you on the pronunciation, but I think he has one of very best names in baseball!
  7. I like the signing too. And yes, still waiting for either a better quality starter to solidify the rotation, and/or a strong new arm in the bullpen. The wait continues.
  8. Good article! Some thoughtful, intelligent, and encouraging responses from those various players, especially Kohl Stewart. Here's hoping the right attitude and preparation translates into good results this season.
  9. I think that is very true, especially the last sentence. The Twins will never be able to compete with the elite money teams like New York and LA in attracting big name free agents, so we need to have some other qualities to entice them. What would work? A great manager and coaching staff? The chance to play with some great young talent? Free ice skating perks in the winter?
  10. Of that bunch, I think Brad Brach would make the most sense for the Twins. Nobody else really lights my fire. But please stay away from Bud Norris. Yes, he's become a decent reliever in the past couple or years after some atrocious years as a starter, but he still scares me.
  11. Very interesting and informative article! I'm intrigued by some of these minor league pitchers such as Stashak, Smeltzer, and Alcala. As much as I'd like to see another veteran arm in the bullpen (one with some upside as opposed to another Belisle type signing), I'd also urge the front office to promote some of these prospects who are putting up good numbers in the minors. Time to see what they got.
  12. I'll be one of the very few to say that I don't hate this signing. Actually, my first thought when I read the news was: "Cool, they finally signed someone!" Okay, I know; he's not the lights-out bullpen arm we were hoping for, but it's a start, one of those low-risk signings that could bear fruit. Hopefully the Falvine braintrust sees something in him that can be honed or corrected. Obviously, we don't want to see the Perez of 2018, but I'd love to have the young Perez of 2013, when he was posting good numbers before TJ surgery.
  13. When I lived in Orlando I used to go to O-Twins games all the time. I was a big fan of Mahomes when he pitched for them. Always thought, or hoped, he would become a mainstay of the big league team's rotation. Oh well, that didn't happen. But very nice to see his kid doing so well in football.
  14. I had to look at that photo twice to admit that I wasn't seeing things! I had totally forgotten that Griffey ever played for the Chisox, however briefly.
  15. At this point I am just weary of the Twins signing cast-offs from other teams and other no-name players who will probably spend most of the season in AAA. Sure, there is always the chance we can sign someone worthwhile like Astudillo who exceeds expectations, but for the most part these are underwhelming moves. Wake me when it's over.
  16. Not much in the way of exciting pitchers on that list, although if they got Dallas Keuchel.or Gio Gonzalez on a 1-year deal that wouldn't be such an awful thing. And I like the Martin Perez idea that Chris floated. But if the Twins are truly serious about contending in 2019 I think they need to aim higher and trade for someone like Greinke or maybe even take a chance on Sonny Gray rebounding away from New York. I just don't think we can depend on Pineda as a solid rotation piece at this point, at least not until he shows that he's healthy and durable.
  17. Yeah, that was a weird Rockies team last year. All those "great" additions to their bullpen pretty much stank up the place ... and yet they made the playoffs. Baseball is such an unpredictable beast.
  18. I never thought I'd see the day when "Sano" and "slimmest" were used in the same sentence. That made me smile big time!
  19. I'm not sure either. But factoring in the fact that we already have several outfielders that can do the AAA shuttle, I'd say that Granite might be the one they DFA.
  20. Thinking about Johan Santana and his great but abbreviated career, I think he warrants consideration for this hall. But then you'd have to also think about once great players like Dale Murphy and Andruw Jones who flamed out at a relatively early age. Again, I'm not saying they deserve to be in the Hall, maybe they do, but it's worth discussion,
  21. You both make good points. At some point we need to be honest with ourselves and realize that each generation of players were doing things to "enhance" their performance, whether it was popping pills, using steroids, throwing spitballs, or scuffing the ball. That's just been part of this game for as long as I can remember. Not saying that's a good thing or that I'm comfortable with it, but it's a reality.
  22. I don't think Rose is ever going to make it ... at least not in his lifetime. I think most of the writers would rather pick a Bonds or Clemens than Rose.
  23. I remain a big believer in Thorpe too. I've never seen him pitch but everything I read about him causes me to take notice. I'm hoping he will make his MLB debut with the Twins this coming season. Yeah, that may be wishful thinking, but I think he has the tools and the confidence to make an impact ASAP.
  24. One position that I'm worried about in the near future is catcher. What's the verdict on our catching prospects in the minors? In addition to being able to hit, which catcher has the best tools? Good arm, pitch framing, the usual arsenal of stuff.
  25. Yeah, what the A's did last year to bolster their starting pitching worked out VERY well. It would be nice for the Twins to pick up at least another "comeback" type started in addition to some extra arms for the bullpen. But back to Cruz, as I noted in another post, I'm less than enthusiastic about the signing. But one thing that I do agree with is that it sends a strong message to the fans --- not to mention the rest of the team --- that the front office intends to compete this year. And that's a very good thing.
