  1. This should be a pretty decent pitching staff. I am also interested in Yunior Severino. He has the distinction of being a highly sought after / highly paid prospect by not one but two teams. It will be intriguing to see if the "fuss" was warranted. And it will be nice to track if Jordan Balazovic can develop. Thanks for the article!
  2. Another reason there will be fewer debuts this year is the contraction in the September roster size from 40 to, what, 28?
  3. The key is the Twins' combined record versus KC, Det and CWS. That's 57 games and the Twins need to win 2/3rds of them or 38-19.
  4. Thanks for writing this JLease: "There's plenty of franchise depth for this spot: Sano could move in there easily, Austin is a good fit if the team finds a way to keep him around, Cron could shift in if they decide they don't like his defense but he keeps on hitting, Rooker might be ready for extended MLB time soon...lots of options." The '19 Twins may have more hitters than spots. And, as pointed out, by July, there will be more knocking on the door.
  5. The Astros? Isn't that where mediocre Twins pitchers go to become Al Stars?
  6. Thank you for the article. I was going to comment on your line: "I can't remember the Twins ever having this degree of first-level depth." because I think they have little "first-level" talent but a lot of B- talent. And then I read your next paragraph. And I agree. Statistically speaking, the third best measure of pitching effectiveness is WHIP. Might the Twins' starters come close to The Indians'?
  7. A few thoughts Among the four popular sports, my opinion is that hockey referees / linesmen are the best. NFL is a second. NBA was the worst during the Shaq decade and the gambling problems. MLB is and always has been 3rd or 4th. I know I sound like an old #@*&%, but a strike is a strike and the concept of "stealing a strike" is more of an indictment of MLB umpires that of a catcher's talent. But, alas, if those stupid fat over-paid attention-seeking so-and sos can be fooled and cannot do their basic function, then so be it.
  8. Hi Seth; I much prefer the language of "optioned" or "re-assigned" over "cut". Thank you.
  9. I'm not sure about Rochester. But I am planning on going to Pensacola to see the 2012 Twins. Has anyone been to Pensacola?
  10. Might someone on this site expalin the differences betwee a left fielder and a right? I assume a part of it involves the arm and its ability to throw from right field to third base. And perhaps, given that roughly 70% of hitters are right handed so there are maybe more chances for a left fielder. I do appreciate Nick Nelson's articles that separate LF from RF.
  11. "...seemingly verging on an offensive breakthrough at age 26." I know spring training is the time of year when optimism runs wild. But the "seemingly verging" phrase could be used on maybe 20 Twins (across the Majors and the Minors).
  12. Against left-handed hitters, the Twins will look at analytics and place four players in right field.
  13. Two comments First, the title suggests the possibility of the best player development system. After the recent failures, I would settle for a league average player development system. Second, as is the blight of many companies, collecting data is not the problem. Using the data is. Yes, all the new “toys” are wonderful, but the ability to implement changes based on the data is more important. Your (great) article sounds like the new generation of minor league coaches co-ordinators are trying! It seems the Twins have finally joined the 21st Century.
  14. I wonder how many runs the Jays would have scored had our two starts NOT had “great” outings.
  15. I give this a big fat maybe: Maybe, just maybe if it was a one-year deal with a club option for a second. And I'm sure the Keuchel camp wouldn't go for it. I had to laugh about the phrase that the Twins have a "solid" relationship with Boras. Does that mean he buys us dinner first?
  16. David HK wrote: "Yet another guy with all the God-given talent in the world, and letting it go to waste." Hey! Stop picking on me! Regards, Andrew Wiggins
  17. If you want to speed up the gam, allow the hitter to call a max of 2 time outs (times out?) per AB. Or ban hitting gloves so they don't have to re-tighten them after every freakin' pitch.
  18. I seem to remember that some on this site were against one year contracts. Exhibit A: Addison Reed.
  19. I tried, unsuccessfully, to find any kind of list of unsigned IFAs for this (until June) signing period. an anyone help? Will the Twins use this money to sign someone no one has ever heard of?
  20. Nick wrote: "the franchise lacks a substantive roadmap beyond those two." Aren't Miranda and Severino both among the Top 20 prospects? But, yes, this is an area where the minors could use a boost. Maybe through the draft (Rece Hinds) but hopefully for a trade from an area of strength (OF, AAAA SP) among minor leaguers.
  21. Hey Ted; I'm confused by your sentence: "The Tigers don’t have a strong farm system headlined by pitching stalwarts, and they also hold the 5th overall pick this summer." Should the "don't" be a "do" or should the "and" be a "but"?
  22. I agree. He's what, 28 years old and only playing low-A? What? He's in AAA and three and a half younger than his competition? He's got this year AND next and maybe the year after that. There is zero rush to get him up as Marwin can start in 2020.
