  1. I like the pic of Max in the write-up. Max is a giant. Polanco looks totally puny next to him. And the guy in the red shirt looks like a pygmy. The dugout throng? Mere Lilliputians in Max's World. Max is Godzilla and crushes all pitching Bauers.
  2. << Hey wait a minute. Is that socialism? >> No, to be socialism every player would have to have the same salary whether they produced or not; not a likely happening under the next CBA.
  3. I'll take a good hitter who can play average defense any day of the week.
  4. <<Still, if you 1) can't play catcher, shortstop or center field, 2) can't hit for much power and 3) don't have above average speed, it's going to be very tough for you to carve out a role in the bigs for very long.>> They said this about Pete Rose when he came up. Just sayin'.
  5. That was quite the defensive alignment in the OF last night. If I'm Odo, maybe I'm gonna nibble too, maybe get a few extra ground balls. Twins win, and a pretty satisfying win at that. Rosie injured bad; Lamonte Wade up good (4th OF for the 2nd half). Arraez getting more playing time in the 2nd half good. Looked like May was not happy with the HR he gave up. I think he could become an elite reliever when his command becomes more regular. Side note: the "Sano Shuffle" thing being done by the players is good stuff. This is a fun team.
  6. Since moving to CF, Lamonte Wade's bat has ignited for Rochester. In the last 10 games he's 11-28, batting .393 with 10 walks. Very nice.
  7. Now that was a baseball game. 487 pitches worth, whew. I'll be a zombie today (east coast time) but it was worth it.
  8. << Make decent offers-90% of our best players will not make the Twins. If you want someone good, don’t insult the other team by low balling them. Those teams quickly lose respect for the Twins when that happens! >> I kind of take the opposite approach. Everybody starts with a low ball position otherwise you don't have any bargaining room. It's why they are called trade negotiations. It's where you end up at agreement time that matters, not the beginning. Respect is earned through shrewd negotiating.
  9. XFIP, or Fielding Independent Pitching, tries to eliminate the effects of defense on a pitcher's performance with a caveat on estimating HRs allowed vs Flyballs. The American League average for xFIP right now is about 4.50, very close to the league ERA of 4.47. So xFIP and ERA are usually very close. Gibson at 3.43 is 9th in the league with pitchers who have thrown a minimum of 40 innings (the starters). Gerrit Cole is the leader at 2.36, Blake Snell is 2nd at 2.66. Dan Straily of the Orioles is last at 7.15, ouch. In fact, Oriole pitchers hold 5 of the last 20 positions here. Maybe their fielders would like to wear helmuts out there. As you can see in Tom's post above, only Pineda is higher than the league xFIP average. Odorizzi is an interesting case as his ERA is 1.96, but his xFIP is 4.26. If xFIP is predictive at all, second half results might not be as glorious as the first.
  10. The bullpen usage charts are great. A nice snapshot of who has been racking up the pitches and who might or might not be able to pitch next game. Not that they are done here, but I also like the last week's worth of hitting stats to see who is hot or cold.
  11. Ever notice that they have pitching machines for hitters to practice on, but they don't have any hitting machines for pitchers to practice on. Hmmmm.
  12. In the all and all, maybe there is some organizational level kinetic performance energy and all organizations are rather equal in this regard, and this year were using more of it at the major league level then in the past. Zen ciao.
  13. To TribeAZ13, thanks for the love. I'm a huge Francona fan. After watching him lead the Red Sox to WS wins in 2004 and 2007 and listening to his radio show stuff, I though he did a great job and then getting dumped was a bad move on the Sox part. I knew when the Indians signed him they would be much improved. But I gotta tell ya, after the last few years of getting Kluber-ed, Santana-ed and Carrassco-ed, I don't mind seeing chief wahoo in the rear view mirror.
  14. Wow. I like beating the Pale Hose, but this series was like taking down a white walker with a dragonglass blade ... poof. Go Twins!
  15. << from Tom: I think it would be cool to see relievers get the opportunity to go through an entire turn through a lineup instead of just one inning ... >> This. Especially in the American League. Especially if a pitcher is throwing well. But I get the one inning and done thing too. You have to mange your bullpen looking ahead to tomorrow and the rest of the week. Its just that you'd like your best arms to throw the most innings with a caveat toward leveraged situations. Mike Marshall was a one man bullpen, lol. He also was a travel logistics expert and could figure out how to get all your stuff down to spring training and back again in a timely fashion and end up with the same stuff. Amazing. Just don't ask him about dog catchers.
  16. This is the type of game that the last few years seemed hard to win. Get a lead, the other team comes back and grabs the momentum, then . . . well you know, another loss. Not tonite. Gibby hung in there until he didn't, then the pen men held the fort. Check out the ERA's of the relievers in the box score. Can't remember the last time seeing such a string of low ERA's. Hope Garv is alright. Go Twins!
  17. The article is about a 1-year comparison. If Rod Carew holds the 1-year OPS+ record for Twins middle infielders and Polanco is possibly challenging that record, seems like you have to compare him to Carew, don't you? Comparing Polanco to Carew career wise is another question for another day. Was just thinking, anyone remember the 1969 infield of 1B-Killebrew, 2B-Carew, SS-Cardenas, 3B-Graig Nettles? Nice infield. Wish we would have kept Nettles.
  18. It is amazing what confidence in throwing quality pitches and being able to get hitters out does for your stat line.
  19. Watched the game on ESPN (yes I turned the sound down after awhile). Martin and Garver looked great together. It looked like they expected to get each hitter out. They looked very confident out there. Been a Garver fan since they drafted him (gotta support fellow Albuquerqueans). Is that a word? Mitch Garver - Allstar catcher. Yes. Most similar player on Baseball Reference to Martin Perez through age 27? Bruce Hurst, Most similar by age? Cole Hamels. Just saying.
  20. Speaking of Palka, I see he was 1 for 35 (batting average .029) for the Pale Hose and is now performing (or non-performing) in Charlotte where he is hitting .167 with no homers. Ouch. Maybe he'll be back up if he starts to mash.
  21. I gotta disagree with you on this one. Brian Dozier is a very passionate guy that wants to win as much or more than most and is a good clubhouse influence. I knew he had the confidence to succeed in the majors; just didn't see the power developing like it did. I'm pulling for him to get going at the plate for the Nats; maybe start spraying the ball around again. I didn't think we would sign Schoop but I'm glad we did. Two years ago, whoever thought he'd be playing 2B for the Twins?
  22. If turtles can't read, how come they know it's a turtle crossing there? Ahah. The best is when I'm driving home and up ahead there is a vehicle stopped in the middle of the road with its flashers on, and I'm thinking, "now what?". As I get closer I see it's my wife, and she's out there like a freaking crossing guard escorting some "speeding" turtle across the road so it doesn't get squashed by some other driver. God bless that woman.
