  1. Meyer and May were/are almost certainly going to be eaten alive as rookies no matter when they got called up, just like Gibson did. I would have rather they had taken their lumps in 2014 with the hopes that they became accustomed to MLB compitition in 2015 rather than 2016. Now they may take their lumps in 2016 and we have to hope they are competent in 2017. May and Meyer will not be blocked if Gibson and/or the #5 guy don't perform well. Nolasco, Santana and Hughes will not get benched no matter how May and Meyer perform. Seems silly to hope for injuries, and significant ones at that. Spot starts due to a couple of missed starts won't do them much good.
  2. Well the probelm with this is that the Twins aren't a contending team. The longer the team puts off the development of the prospects, the longer the rebuild will take Also, May and Meyer aren't being rushed, they're 25 and have had plenty of minor league seasoning.
  3. I remember researching that two years ago when Willingham was the Twins largest free agent signing and it was the lowest largest free agent signing for any team. (There has to be a better way to phrase that!) 4/55 has moved them up though. They are definately ahead of the Padres, who I believe gave Carlos Quinten their largest contract and the Pirates who set their record this year with Liriano. This is equal in dollars but fewer years than the Royals gave Gil Meche. I think Cleveland's 4/56 deal for Swisher is their largest, so that's only a million buck more. They're low on the list, but who did you want? I woud never give a 6-7 year deal for a starting pitcher. The free agent class this year is awful.
  4. Last year the injured starters were continally replaced by AAAA pitchers because their seniority "earned" them the promotion. And Nolasco was never demoted despite a full season of making the fans turn off the TV. Besides, I don't want Meyer, May, Berrios or any other true prospect to make spot starts, what good does that do? If they are going to start for the Twins, they should have a permanent position in the rotation until they prove unable to cut it.
  5. I guess that I think in three years they'll either be very good starters or in the back of the bullpen. But I don't want to think, I want to know. We shouldn't be unsure of what they can do this time next year. We MIGHT get to see enough of them this year, but now that is not certain. This can't turn into a Chris Parmelee situation where he got five odd games here and 7 odd games there and we try to make a judgment based on piecemeal information. We shouldn't evaluate these guys based on a scattershot of data from spot starts and periodic bullpen appearances.
  6. Theoretically they could get 30 starts. Theoretically they could get stuck in Rochester all season too. Sticking the youngstes in the rotation at the onset regardless of other options would have been the best way to ensure we get a clear idea of what they will give us in the furture. It could have shown that they won't cut it, but I don't care, we need to find out sometime, now is better than next year assuming being competitive is more of a future goal than a present goal. It is on the Twins to make room for prospects, but I don't trust them to put development ahead of country club ideals. This is the club that put Kris Johnson, Logan Darnell and Johan Pino at the head of the line because they were more veteran and had put more time in. It let Ricky Nolasco put up a historically terrible season for an entire year and re-signed Mike Pelfrey to a two year deal because they liked him in the clubhouse.
  7. I wouldn't want Porcello or Fister, would have less interest in Kazmir, but there are look to be a lot of options next year. There may be bounce back seasons from Buchholz, Estrada and Masterson. There are just more pitchers. Regardless, I was already counting on 2015 to be a development year, meaning I was fine letting the young guys play even if they struggle. We need to know. We still might get some answers, but now it's not certain the picture will get any clearer.
  8. This move really seems like the team is hoping to compete now, however I still dont think they can if they don't have an ace. It may be a long shot, but the team's only chance at getting an ace is to hope one of the young pitchers will turn into one. Santana's a fine pitcher, but I still think the best move was to give a full season to May and Meyer and then if one or both don't pan out, 2016 is when you go and find long term pitcher, Cueto, Latos, Zimmerman, Porcello, Fister, Kazmir, or Greinke, Samardzjia, Price for those of us with too high of expectations. Next year's free agent class projects to be so much better.
  9. Man, I feel like an idiot! I've been diving too deep into these numbers all this time! I get it now though, I'm going to just round to the nearest whole number and OPS should really look like binary code; you either get a 1 or you get a 0.
  10. Right, and what changed with Santana that the Twins only offered him 3/33 last year but this year they offered 4/55 plus an option year? A draft pick was included both times. To answer my own question, the Twins were displaying more desperation this year. Sometimes when you're back is against the wall you make great decisions that that free you from your circumstances. Other times you make rash decisions that worsens them. Hopefully this is the former.
  11. I wanted guys on short term deals, but it looks pretty clear that Masterson didn't want to come here. He reportedly wouldn't schedule a sit down with the Twins, and most people predicted that he'd receive more than he did with Boston, which indicates that he wanted to go back there to try to rebuild his value. Latos is under contract for only one year though and do you really think the Twins will be contenders this year? Why would you want to give up some nice prospects to get him in a losing year? If the Twins want him, they can go after him as a free agent next year, no prospects attached.
  12. They should have, in 2005. That would have been just about right to buy out that second free agent year instead of only one.
  13. Yeah, Pelfry in the pen could work. Milone needs to stay away. I don't care what hand you throw with, guys with low velocity and stuff that weak should not be coming into games with men on base.
  14. Gilmartin wasn't on the 40-man, that's why the Mets were able to draft him. The Twins will have to DFA or trade someone else, and there are plenty of options for both.
  15. And it was a looooooong journey to get him to the point of being an average reliever. I'd expect an equally long and even more unlikely journey for Gilmartin to match him.
  16. I'd rather have Duensing for one season. Gilmartin is a soft tossers who will get eaten alive in the pen. Eaten alive in the rotation too. He'll be back by April.
  17. Soft tossing lefties belong in the NL anyway. Not sure that an 88 MPH fastball will work out for a rookie out of the pen though. Odds are he'll get returned. Acutally odds are nearly all will get returned.
  18. I thought MLB.com was streaming or at least posting Rule V selections but I can't find it. Anyone see where it is? They need a serious revamp of their site, that thing has been a difficult navigation for about a decade.
  19. Berardino thinks Graham is the pick if he gets to the Twins: https://twitter.com/MikeBerardino/status/542946215508185088 So we can probably cross him off the list considering how the last couple of weeks have played out for Berardino, he's on a bit of a cold streak.
  20. During losing seasons, two of the four most anticipated times of the year are the Winter Meetings and the trade deadline. It's funny that this would be so, as I always look forward to them only spend my work day trying to control the urge to type in all caps out of sheer frustration.
  21. I'd guess the Red Sox and A's would argue that Bill James won them plenty of games. If you're implying that it is impossible for a man not on the diamond to help win a game, then we might as well get rid of the managers, coaches and GMs too.
  22. FTFY Molly. I wanted the team to go outside it's comfort zone for a new manager mostly just to prove they had the stones to dip into the unknown, but I'll freely acknowledge that Molitor appears to have most of the qualities I'd most prefer in my team's manager.
