I would bet an expansion draft today would be quite different than the past drafts. Teams are now statistically inclined and they just have a better idea how these things play out now. I would think a savvy expansion team would almost solely focus on drafting high upside prospects who aren't protected due to them still being a few years away. The new clubs know they are going to stink coming out of the gates, but they also have a payroll of zero and can build most of a 25-man through free agency.

Ok, just getting caught up as the kids just went to bed. So if I'm following today correctly: Arcia got traded for a used nutcup, the good Dozier is back, the Twins still can't get 60-year-old A-Rod out, Milone is still bad but only because he doesn't get the same calls Tanaka gets and Mauer is overpaid?
-
Sometimes Dozier appears to be the clear clubhouse leader. Other times he sounds like a stubborn teenager. I mean, I understand the desire to have some veterans even if I personally want very few of them, but just because a guy is nearing 30 doesn't necessarily make him a good role model or mature. Even if rolling your eyes at a coach's instruction is innocuous or taken out of context in this situation, stubbornly sticking with your personal approach when superiors would prefer you try to alter it probably isn't presenting the best message for the younger guys. Do we want Buxton or Sano to get the idea they can do things their way?

Article: Twins Must Clear Infield Logjam Quickly
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree, and that's the approach I'd take with any trade at this point. My only point is, getting some of these guys off of the 25-man is worth more than what ever they'd get back in return, which likely is going to be less than most of us like even under the most ideal scenario.- 64 replies

Article: Twins Must Clear Infield Logjam Quickly
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
My approach: screw the return. Getting Polanco and Sano up to speed by 2017 is worth more than trying to leverage a B prospect instead of a C prospect. Package the infielders with any or all arms, and if trying to get a shiney new toy is so damn important to this club, eat some salary. With all the youth, this team isn't going to have any payroll issues for a half decade at least.- 64 replies

So wold a lot of people, but it's more like here's 30K and for the next 5 years we will only pay you $4/hr and you have to pay most of your own expenses. So hope you don't plan on having kids anytime soon.

Article: Kent Hrbek And The All-Star Game
nicksaviking replied to Bill Parker's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yup, both Hrbek and Puckett got their MVPs sniped by relief pitchers. Which is partly why I laugh that Justin Morneau got the one that Yankees fans indignantly thought Derek Jeter should have gotten. Even if Jeter was better than Morneau that year (which is debatable) he wasn't better than Mauer and Santana.- 19 replies

Article: Kent Hrbek And The All-Star Game
nicksaviking replied to Bill Parker's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Here is my recollection of how accomplishments were ranked in the 1980s: Batters: 1: Having an All-Star Card last year 2: Batting Average 3: Having All-Star Cards in previous years 4: HR 5: Multiple Gold Gloves 6: RBIs 7: Game winning RBIs Wild Card: Your manager is picking the roster and likes you (not specific to the 1980s). Pitchers: 1: Wins I also remember that even while previous generations cheered Home Run races ever since Babe Ruth stepped to the plate, HRs in the 1980s were almost considered crass. It almost seemed like HRs were fine, but mostly only to entertain the kids who didn't appreciate the finer aspects of the game. Probably not coincidentally, it took Harmon Killebrew half a decade to get into the HOF in the 1980s.- 19 replies

I would strongly endorse a GM who doesn't value such traits that are not significant to managerial success.- 267 replies

Article: Miguel Sano's Defensive Future
nicksaviking replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't know that they were worried about Sano sulking, I don't think expecting and catering to a malcontent attitude (and I am absolutely NOT suggesting that Sano has just that) is a very sound business or baseball strategy. I'd guess if the team did secretly plan on putting Sano back at 3B in due time, the presumptive permanence of the move to the OF was likely in consideration of Plouffe who no doubt would otherwise be holding his breathe and agonizing over a trade every time the manager called him into the office..- 106 replies

Yes, right next to the Cuddyer to 2B card. Which while frightening, was both useful and highly entertaining.- 106 replies

Article: Miguel Sano's Defensive Future
nicksaviking replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I never liked the move to the OF, but frankly, it was mostly because of the air of permanence that seemed to come from Molitor and Ryan when talking about the move. Had there been even a hint that this would be temporary because they still hadn't figured out what to do with Plouffe, there would have been less consternation from the fan base. At least there would have been less from me. Liability or not, knowing that Sano can in a pinch play the outfield along with 3B and 1B is fine by me as any number of in-game moves can often call for unorthodoxed roster management. At the very least, I like having that in the back pocket.- 106 replies

So if I'm hearing you, you're saying we should all do our part and stop going to Target Field and cancelling our providers who carry FSN to help the Twins lower revenue and market size. Only for the sake of getting those comp picks, of course. Let's do it people!- 80 replies

Article: Oswaldo Arcia And The Limits Of Patience
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm having a hard time taking Arcia's numbers in 2016 seriously, because if I do, I'm probably forcing myself to also take Buxton, Kepler, Sano, Rosario, Berrios, May, Meyers, Murphy, Park and every other young players numbers seriously. I think there's a pretty good chance that Arcia would have never blossomed in this current system, so even if he does go on to do great things, we likely wouldn't have seen the same results here. Arcia may very well be a "change of scenery" kind of guy. However, I am also very hopeful that we are seeing the end of the current system and new leadership can get better results from the young players. So I would have preferred to hang on to Arcia and simply brought the new scenery to Minnesota. -
Article: Twins Designate Oswaldo Arcia
nicksaviking replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
To be fair to the team, Grossman has always had near elite on-base skills at all levels and this team absolutely needs more O even if it comes at the expense of the S. My frustration comes from the roster construction and management, because this club should absolutely have room for both of those players. They're the worst team in the league, how is it possible to have run out of room for controllable, inexpensive young players?- 267 replies

Article: Twins Designate Oswaldo Arcia
nicksaviking replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Pretty disappointing, for all his warts, I think his cock-sure attitude is something this club needs actually. Arcia is the kind of youthful player with potential that if another team DFA'd him, we'd all be clamoring for the Twins to pick him up. Ryan better think long and hard about his roster moves coming up, because if Buxton, Park or Kepler get optioned any time the rest of the year, he's going to have a lot of explaining to do. Good luck to Arcia, I hope he goes somewhere that platoons him correctly and he goes on a tear. Perhaps that will spur changes for the Twins. Also, I'd guess this means that Ryan isn't currently shopping Plouffe, Dozier or Nunez. Also disappointing.- 267 replies

I am curious too. I would think it would be difficult considering how many HS kids they took early. Knowing what Rortvedt got would be a good indicator if they are going to have to go over slot for all the early HS kids.- 80 replies
