  1. I'm not against getting some free agent pen help, but I think it should be of the bounce-back variety. I don't see much logic in a 100 loss team spending big money on a closer. My dark horse prediction. Phil Hughes gets the job and runs with it by the end of April if he comes back from his surgery (and maybe he doesn't, I have no clue how long it takes to recover from sawing out a freakin' rib). Prior to his decline, which one would hope was due to the nerve issue, he had decent velocity, which tends to increase in the pen.
  2. Interesting, it almost seems like I'm plagiarizing your material, word for word.
  3. An ignorant answer from another non-athlete. Players do tend to get stronger and add muscle as they age, but I think the arm strength is largely due to flexibility of the joint. Using pitchers as an easily visible example, guys tend to lose velocity in their mid-20's. Since throwing over-hand is a largely unnatural thing for the human body to do I don't know that arm strength typically increases due to muscle growth, but instead decreases as wear on the joint accumulates and flexibility lessens.
  4. I just want to see moves that are consistent with a vision, not just throwing crap at the wall to see what sticks. Polanco can stay at SS, but then get rid of the sinkerballers like Gibson and Kintzler, (or tell Gibson to stop throwing his terrible sinker). Polanco can be a utility guy, but then make sure your manager isn't so stubborn in his positioning at the other positions that Polanco doesn't play six games a week. Polanco can play 3B, but then there better be a plan to upgrade the SS position because it's not like Eduardo Escobar playing SS everyday is a huge upgrade. Polanco or Dozier can be traded, but the players coming back better make sense. Both players are too good to be traded just for the sake of a trade, because the above three options could work if they are made in conjunction with other moves to make a specific organizational vision. This just can't be another, "Eh, we're kind of just winging it, just stick Sano in RF for the time being" situation.
  5. Me too. I was going to say that Turner and Slegers just seem like guys the front office would protect needlessly, but then it occurred to me that that is what the OLD front office would have been tempted to do. No clue what Favley will do, but I can't wait to find out.
  6. Yeah, look at Roy Hobbs. He was a stud two way player but didn't make it to the majors until he was like 35, and it seemed like he must have had to give up pitching anyway! Also, he looked waaaaaaay older than that, closer to 50, that much development time must really take it's toll.
  7. Judging by who often passes as MLB shortstops, I tend to think baseball pundits set a really high bar for shortstop defense with the prospects.
  8. Timeless is the one where the heroes include a woman and an African American going back in time and trying to fix things? I think the modern day scientists in charge of of sending people back in time probably should have taken a social studies class or two to see if those would be two of the best choices for a discreet mission....
  9. So you're saying if it doesn't work out for him in the front office there's a job waiting for him in the Twins bullpen.
  10. I just would think that Falvey and Pohlad would have discussed a game plan already, I'd think that would be part of the interview process. It also seems extremely un-Twinslike to not let the current crew know if they are going to get axed. It seems hard to believe no one has let it slip by now that a bunch of them are getting fired.
  11. I'd like to hear more updates on this situation. I'd think that Falvey would have an idea who his GM would be, and I'd think we'd be hearing some rumors or ideas. I'm starting to fear all that's going to happen is Falcey is installed at the top and Anthony and company all stay.
  12. Parker, after Derek Falvey hires you as a member of his staff, will you still contribute here?
  13. McPhail replaced Morris with a really good John Smiley and chili Davis with Dave Winfield. There's no reason to think McPhail wouldn't have at least continued to use free agency as a tool unlike Ryan. If he wouldn't have continued to use free agency, that surely would have been on the owner, not him.
  14. You've givin me a headache. http://www.bizchickblogs.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/stirring-the-pot.gif
  15. "and I also wouldn't be surprised if Rob Antony stayed on in one of those lesser roles so as to maintain some sense of continuity." As far as I'm concerned, there needs to be no attempt made to maintain any continuity. If having no continuity leads to chaos and anarchy in the first year, well, it wouldn't look any different than what we have now. Blow. It. Up. I'm also still not sold on the idea that Molitor is a lock to be back. For those that have been clamoring for Sandy Alomar Jr., well here's your conduit.
  16. I will too, but I could see that show going off the rails really, really easily.
  17. Don't worry, in 20 years the network overlords will have implanted both sensory gratification and mainstream withdrawal chips in your brain so you will crave and feel like you enjoy the poorly written garbage.
  18. He's not the only one. Too many pitchers have struggled for reasons that are barely if at all detectable. I know we are currently operating under the assumption that the field staff will be back, but on the off chance that the new suits convince Pohlad to let them start anew with the coaching staff, I'd like to see what the new guys do with guys like Tonkin, May, Chargois, Gibson and Barrios. Their stuff isn't coming close to matching their results, something just doesn't add up.
  19. Are we certain that these men are actually interviewing for the POBO gig? Because I haven't once heard the front office mention that they'll even hire one, it was only an inside scoop by some of the local media. Even if they do hire one, do we know that these four are the candidates for the job? I haven't once seen one of these reports mention mention that these guys are interviewing for the POBO job, only that they are interviewing for front office/leadership roles. We assume the POBO would be hired first as that would be the logical thing to do, but are we positive they aren't in fact interviewing for the GM job?
  20. Where does "ending up a Twins fan" fall on your Pro/Con list?
  21. Any and every team will want to do #2, but it's not possible. If Ervin Santana was a free agent, he'd probably be overwhelmingly viewed as the top target except for those teams that are confident in 37-year-old Rich Hill.
  22. If this team gets an analytically inclined GM, he or she better be analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of players from a numbers standpoint. If Pohlad has his say about the 2017 field staff, the manager sure isn't going to do it. What good is it going to this team to modernize the front office if the field staff won't implement their ideas?
  23. I want a new GM to come in here and tell Kyle Gibson that his sinker isn't as good as he thinks it is, so stop throwing it with two strikes.
  24. I agree. We wouldn't need a new GM to ride with those options. People like to say you don't change just for the sake of changing. In this case I think you do. Blow it up, try different pieces and see what sticks until you get it right.
  25. You got the last name right. The first name is Joaquin though. But I think you've confused this with that other baseball show, because the previews I've seen were about a slim young female pitcher, not a chubby reliever closing in on 40.
