  1. I'd do the same in a heartbeat to get out from under Hughes or Nolasco. Most teams aren't sure about being buyers, but seeing as the Royals and Mets were in the WS last year and wish to do so again, you'd have to assume they are. I'd give teams a discount on the return to get some of these guys off the books now simply to ensure they are off the books by the end of the year.
  2. I'd think Polanco is ready to be given a fair shot. The urgency really isn't about getting a good return for Plouffe, the urgency is to move guys who might not be movable once the A's, Angels, Yankees, Tigers, Brewers, Phillies, Rockies and other teams also decide they will not compete this year. The Twins already know they're sellers.
  3. I guess I don't understand the last sentence. Shouldn't the goal to use as many workable innings at the majors instead of the minors? Pitchers seem to leave the game due to physical deterioration much quicker than batters. Also, pitchers are the causation to the batters reaction, it is the batter that needs to adjust to the pitcher, not the other way around. Because of those two things, it is the pitchers that I'd call up early and let the batters season in the minors if needed. I understand this is the opposite approach the Twins appear to take. On a more fundamental note, relief pitchers who throw 100 MPH don't tend to last long. Even if he is lights out for a few years, there's a very good chance he'll never get a shot at a true career-making free agent contract. Let him get his service time and give him a better chance of making his money. Also, it's a lost season, he has options and he's already on the 40-man, what's the harm?
  4. Who was acquired for Luis Castillo who was acquired for Travis Bowyer and Scott Tyler. We have a pretty good chain here, let's trade Nunez and keep it going!
  5. Every inning Chargois throws in the minors is one less he throws n the majors. Relief pitchers tend to have short shelf lives. Very few leave the game on their own terms.
  6. If they go hitter, I just want best hitter available regardless of position. Position seems like it should be pretty concrete and easier to project, yet it rarely is. I do wonder why he's chosen Liberty though. Surely a top 30 guy would have scholarship offers from top programs wouldn't he? Also, how about signing his dad?
  7. Does it matter? The goal is to get Sano back to 3B and another high strikeout/low on-base guy off of the roster. This team has prospects, they need to find room for the ones they have. Getting more shouldn't be the top goal. You can "lose" a trade and still come out ahead.
  8. Could be, or it could be they have one of those handshake deals with a guy who is currently claiming he wants overslot to deter other teams.
  9. Damn it Elon Musk, just continue to focus on making cars that can drive 2000 miles on a AAA battery.
  10. Good evening everybody. Not sure if anyone noticed, but Brian Dozier is batting 3rd tonight. Just thought I'd drop that completely irreverent observation.
  11. Right, and now we're concerned about Terry Ryan Circa 2011-2016 and particularly concerned about the years beyond. This game evolves all the time. I don't want someone who clings to past success and holds it up as proof of future achievement. For the record, I don't believe Ryan does that even if some of his supporters and collaborators do.
  12. There's a danger there, but frankly, if the pitchers are running the ship, it's time to change captains. Perkins publicly skewered Pinto to the point where there was no chance of redemption for him and it was a total bush league play by Perkins. Suzuki is not a good catcher and the pitchers seem to like him. I think there's something more in play than just defensive liability. If I were to guess, I'd think the pitchers resented Pinto's inexperience as much as anything. Also, if Collins is the best bat available, then his offense may play at a corner spot too. I don't care what position he plays, if the team goes offense, I want the guy who's bat is most likely to be a difference maker.
  13. If they pick a bat, I want the best bat available regardless of position. He might be it. And as others pointed out, an average to below average defensive catcher is just fine if his bat plays. This team already has a poor defensive catcher, and he doesn't hit.
  14. Those guys also had a big time agent, Casey Close I believe. As guys like Aiken and Close already have a pretty nice savings account due to draft bonuses, most of the other shenanigans the MLB pulls on the minor-leaguers only effect the guys that don't get big draft bonuses, and most of those guys probably don't have high-profile agents who regularly deal with MLB front offices.
  15. I would think never having to play in the field and instead sitting on a bench in the dugout for 95% of the game probably does more for one's injury problems than any steroid would.
  16. He did have a 10.6 H/9 in Ft. Myers so it looks like his current AA pace is a bit of a mirage, on the other hand his 2015 numbers in this department were pretty strong. What's happened to Levi Michael though? I thought last year he started to figure it out, but now repeating AA nothing is going well for him.
  17. Maybe, but just because Ryan is the wrong guy now, doesn't mean you were wrong about the guy yesterday. Well, I mean literally yesterday you would have been wrong, but perhaps not some time in the past. Having a job this long no doubt engenders a huge level of attachment both to colleagues and players. Human nature would seem to indicate that the longer someone is with you, the harder it is to see them go. Everyone is so entrenched their roots have wrapped around the foundation of the organization. Getting rid of anyone is hard and painful, doubly so in a situation where men and women have bonded for decades. We need someone new even if for the sole purpose of doing the dirty work and severing the ties of sentimentality.
  18. It could be, but Carl was 91 when it was conceived and it was launched after his death. I'm not saying he wasn't the person in charge, but I'd think there was someone(s) else behind it.
  19. If he wants to be a HOFer, he really should push for 18+
  20. Frankly, I could care less who's in charge of the business side of things. If there was a new President of Baseball Operations and St. Peter was given the new title of President of Business Operations, I wouldn't blink an eye. Target Field upgrades, PR, community outreach, promotions and marketing deals; for me they all fall under the title of "Cool, but Tell Me More About the Team".
  21. The Twins were stuck crawling back to FSN mid-season though after their own TwinsTV (or whatever it was called) failed to get picked up by broadcasters. There's no way the team was in a strong position to negotiate when they currently weren't able to reach 95% of their target audience. Not that I'm saying St. Peter was in charge of that fiasco, I have no clue who pushed for that.
  22. Buck made a comment previously that he felt comfortable in AAA playing with friends. I'm normally in favor of letting guys toughen up at the MLB level, but they've already tried that a few times with Buxton. I would have liked to have seen him recalled along with Kepler, Polanco, Vargas and/or other players who could at least give the perception of shouldering the burden with Buxton. Even if all of the pressure is actually on Buxton alone, I don't think he'd feel that way if he was promoted with a buddy. And I don't really care if there isn't room for the buddies, they can make room pretty easy with this roster.
  23. I hope not because I've got a bunch of pro-leg-kick posts dating back to last summer that I'm waiting to queue up and act all high and mighty about.
  24. Which is mostly extrodinary when considering Kubrick's extreme attention to detail and his OCD level of demand for perfection. Much like this team's attitude toward defense.
