  1. The Twins are currently flush with middle infielders who can hit, why would the put one on the 25 who can't? Defense is secondary to offense for this club, and in this situation, I completely agree. No need to intentionally make a black hole where one isn't currently present. It seems everyone wants a defensive first SS, yet when the team gets one, the leash is about ten games before the complaining starts; see Florimon and Punto.
  2. I guess my opinion is that Polanco has shown himself at least worth of a shot going on two years, and now they've basically wasted those two eval years and left themselves only one crack at it.
  3. Agreed. I find it hard to believe this front office doesn't see the corner they are painting themselves into with Polanco. Also, even if Dozier profiles as a better overall player, Polanco's superior OBP potential may be more valuable to this team considering its current make-up.
  4. If there is going to be a regime change in the front office, I'm inclined to move as many vets as possible to clean the slate for the new guy so he can remake this team according to his vision. That being said, Santana is probably the type of good-not-great pitcher that would fit into just about any vision.
  5. Hopefully this bitter pill is what it takes to give Jim Pohlad the kick in the pants to look at every option in an effort to find the real cure.
  6. If this behavior was actually prohibited though, wouldn't the rules say that the signings would be invalidated instead of penalized? If I steal a car, I don't get to keep the car if I pay a fine and do my jail time. Either way, I really would like to hear the reasoning from the Twins brass. Plenty of teams, maybe even most of them by now, have taken the penalty and reaped the benefits including many small market clubs. I'd like to know if the Twins won't do it for "ethical" reasons, fiscal reasons, if they don't like enough players or if they just can't attract enough players. I'm curious, though I'd probably be disappointed by any answer. We really need an International Draft if the Twins as they currently stand are going to compete for Latin prospects going forward. If the team is going to self-impose a handicap, they really can't rely on scouting alone and solely rely on finding the diamonds in the rough.
  7. ******Moderator Note********** I'm highlighting this post because there appears to be a disconnect between some posters and the posting policies. Being critical is fine and understandable, most of the mods are critical and frustrated. However, all posts are expected to be respectful. If a poster feels they are incapable of being critical and respectful at the same time, do not post. This is an FYI only, any response to this FYI will likely be considered off topic.
  8. I didn't like the trade because Jepsen alone wasn't going to get that team to the playoffs and I thought he looked bad in TB last year, but to be fair, Jepsen was shorter term than they expected.
  9. *****Moderator Note******** I too am frustrated that this team looks as though once again it won't take advantage of the loophole and blow past their spending cap, **** but this still needs to be kept civil. Let's refrain from putting words in others' mouths and personal attacks of other posters and Twins personnel.
  10. Good luck Phil. I don't find this good news simply because I don't wish an extensive surgery and rehabilitation on anyone.
  11. His old self never got swings and misses, I like the new Gibson better!
  12. I would bet an expansion draft today would be quite different than the past drafts. Teams are now statistically inclined and they just have a better idea how these things play out now. I would think a savvy expansion team would almost solely focus on drafting high upside prospects who aren't protected due to them still being a few years away. The new clubs know they are going to stink coming out of the gates, but they also have a payroll of zero and can build most of a 25-man through free agency.
  13. $8? Still cheaper than the borough on the other side of the Harlem River.
  14. Ok, just getting caught up as the kids just went to bed. So if I'm following today correctly: Arcia got traded for a used nutcup, the good Dozier is back, the Twins still can't get 60-year-old A-Rod out, Milone is still bad but only because he doesn't get the same calls Tanaka gets and Mauer is overpaid?
  15. Sometimes Dozier appears to be the clear clubhouse leader. Other times he sounds like a stubborn teenager. I mean, I understand the desire to have some veterans even if I personally want very few of them, but just because a guy is nearing 30 doesn't necessarily make him a good role model or mature. Even if rolling your eyes at a coach's instruction is innocuous or taken out of context in this situation, stubbornly sticking with your personal approach when superiors would prefer you try to alter it probably isn't presenting the best message for the younger guys. Do we want Buxton or Sano to get the idea they can do things their way?
  16. I agree, and that's the approach I'd take with any trade at this point. My only point is, getting some of these guys off of the 25-man is worth more than what ever they'd get back in return, which likely is going to be less than most of us like even under the most ideal scenario.
  17. My approach: screw the return. Getting Polanco and Sano up to speed by 2017 is worth more than trying to leverage a B prospect instead of a C prospect. Package the infielders with any or all arms, and if trying to get a shiney new toy is so damn important to this club, eat some salary. With all the youth, this team isn't going to have any payroll issues for a half decade at least.
  18. So wold a lot of people, but it's more like here's 30K and for the next 5 years we will only pay you $4/hr and you have to pay most of your own expenses. So hope you don't plan on having kids anytime soon.
  19. Yup, both Hrbek and Puckett got their MVPs sniped by relief pitchers. Which is partly why I laugh that Justin Morneau got the one that Yankees fans indignantly thought Derek Jeter should have gotten. Even if Jeter was better than Morneau that year (which is debatable) he wasn't better than Mauer and Santana.
  20. Here is my recollection of how accomplishments were ranked in the 1980s: Batters: 1: Having an All-Star Card last year 2: Batting Average 3: Having All-Star Cards in previous years 4: HR 5: Multiple Gold Gloves 6: RBIs 7: Game winning RBIs Wild Card: Your manager is picking the roster and likes you (not specific to the 1980s). Pitchers: 1: Wins I also remember that even while previous generations cheered Home Run races ever since Babe Ruth stepped to the plate, HRs in the 1980s were almost considered crass. It almost seemed like HRs were fine, but mostly only to entertain the kids who didn't appreciate the finer aspects of the game. Probably not coincidentally, it took Harmon Killebrew half a decade to get into the HOF in the 1980s.
  21. I would strongly endorse a GM who doesn't value such traits that are not significant to managerial success.
  22. I don't know that they were worried about Sano sulking, I don't think expecting and catering to a malcontent attitude (and I am absolutely NOT suggesting that Sano has just that) is a very sound business or baseball strategy. I'd guess if the team did secretly plan on putting Sano back at 3B in due time, the presumptive permanence of the move to the OF was likely in consideration of Plouffe who no doubt would otherwise be holding his breathe and agonizing over a trade every time the manager called him into the office..
  23. Yes, right next to the Cuddyer to 2B card. Which while frightening, was both useful and highly entertaining.
