Article: Official Winter Meetings Wednesday Thread
nicksaviking replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Darren Wolfson tweeted (can't post from work) that the Twins are looking at Clayton Richard! Excuse me, that exclamation mark was a typo which occurred trying to clean the vomit off of my keyboard. Maybe they just want him for the pen, but after decades of having issues missing bats it's going to take me a long time to come around on guys like this. I've been conditioned to ruin my keyboard thinking about them. Also, I really hope nobody is fooled by former SD pitchers anymore. I mean the book is out that they nearly all are bad once they leave "America's Finest City".- 163 replies

I'm interested in Pomerantz if his value is based more on his AL numbers with Boston, not his NL numbers in San Diego. Because Boston can't really pretend that the pitcher you saw last year in SD is the guy you'll be getting, no Padre pitcher has put up the same numbers after they leave that team. Not one of any significance anyway.- 120 replies

I don't know if it has happened yet or if a player and his agent will ever come to this conclusion, but if a guy is going to accept a 1-year reclamation deal but he wants a shot at a WS ring, it might be wise to initially sign with a non-contender simply so when July comes around you know that only the real contenders will come asking to trade for you.- 120 replies

I don't want the Twins to lose their 2nd round pick next year mostly due to its value; the Twins should be in the driver's seat at draft time and be able to game the situation due to their draft pool as the Astros have done recently. But I'd guess the idea of signing Bautista would be that you could trade him in July for prospects much better than a 2nd round pick. Problem is he's been hurt a lot lately.- 120 replies

Also if you didn't have a stud reliever, but really any kind of average reliever who amassed a goodish amount of saves via skill, unusual circumstance or sheer dumb luck last year.- 120 replies

Article: Not-So-Premium Velocity
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I was happy the Twins attempted to get some hard throwers, there was a clear change of direction after the Alex Wimmers draft. However getting hard throwers alone clearly wasn't the solution as it did not result in missing more bats at the MLB level. I don't know what the solution was but it's clear that at least one person from each of the other 29 organizations did as no other team struggled with that issue like the Twins. This one singular issue shows why an organization can't remain insular and only try to copy league trends without having outside perspective and insight. I'm glad Falvey and Lavine are here, hopefully they keep adding others with unique visions and theories and fix most of our systemic issues.- 13 replies

I wouldn't think so, but what would the Royals do with Solar, why would they be interested in him at all? He doesn't fit their system in any way. Not that it couldn't be mis-information slipped out there by the Cubs.- 70 replies

I don't believe Dozier makes as much sense for the Yankees as he does for other teams as they need to use their resources to get starting pitching which isn't available the Old Yankee Way this year, that is big bucks thrown at the free agent market. I also don't believe Brian Cashman when he says he never checked in on the situation.- 120 replies

Sounds like Dayton Moore isn't doing a very good job of reading the closer market. I hope he does trade one of the AL's best relievers to the NL for a fourth OF type who is a poor defender with no speed. Did Moore already forget what got his team to the top? I already thought KCs nice little run was ending, but this just makes no sense.- 70 replies

I don't think removing those four and adding Sale makes the Twins a playoff team in 2017. Even if you took Sale off of the White Sox last year, that was still likely a better team than the Twins have now. I'd rather look for an ace when the team is ready to win, assuming they didn't already find one. Chris Sale on a couple of more .500 or worse teams doesn't get me excited. Also, I can't see the White Sox having any interest in taking on Santiago's salary and they'd likely just look to flip Dozier, which in all likelihood would mean a three team trade where the prospects the Twins get for Dozier go to the White Sox.- 70 replies

From La Velle's piece: --But there's no rush here to move Dozier. If the Twins don't like the names they are hearing, they can hold on to Dozier and see who caves at the trade deadline.-- I think La Velle somehow forgot about Dozier's first two regrettable months last year. Dozier's 1st half/2nd half splits tend to be monumental and you never know which end is going to be the hot one. That doesn't make for a risk I'm overly comfortable taking, and I'm generally a risk taker when it comes to stuff like this. Unless the offers are genuinely lopsided against the Twins right now, Brian Dozier is NOT a guy I'm going into the year with assuming I'll be able to trade him for better value in July. Clearly they weren't blown away with offers last July.- 70 replies

I'm pretty close to being convinced. I'm just going to have a hard time getting over his strikeout issues. I haven't so far heard any logical or believable explanation as to why those numbers will increase. I'm not Nick Blackburn trolling here as he had a couple of decent years, but I wouldn't lose much sleep if the team traded away a guy who profiles like him.- 82 replies

So I'm also cool with adding other players (maybe Rosario) or taking on money (maybe Kazmir) to up the return.- 82 replies

Unless I'm interpreting what was said during the press conference incorrectly, these guys are going to be spring training instructors with what sounds like ensuing front office positions with duties which are either yet to be determined or yet to be made public. I'm assuming their initial duties will be of the teaching variety which would make sense considering they have nearly 60 years of MLB related field experience between them. All I was saying is that I would assume that if there is a conflict between old Twins philosophies and new Twins philosophies, they would surely know to stay the course with the guys currently doing the hiring and firing.

Article: Dozier Trade Talk Heating Up?
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Welcome to the site! I think Peralta's defense is declining and it was never particularly good to begin with. He's also only got one year left on his deal which doesn't really help the Twins past this year. I wouldn't want to give up prospects for a rental player in a rebuilding year. -
I think the pushback in bringing guys back has less to do with the former players/staff as much as it has to do with NOT bringing in fresh outside perspective. When it comes to a singular position like GM or field manager that makes sense. In this case, we now know how short staffed the Twins are compared to other clubs and these guys are "instructors" which is pretty low down on the totem pole. The team needs bodies to fill the void and it's not like these lower level gigs are going to be a hot ticket position league-wide, getting guys who actually want to be here is going to be a challenge. Hunter, Cuddyer and Hawkins likely see this as a stepping stone job. It may be a foot in the door with the Twins, or perhaps another club. I will say that if Falvey brings in a new hitting coach who tries to implement an organizational hitting game plan that differs from the previous regime, Hunter and Cuddyer sure as hell better be on board instead of pushing old agendas. I can't imagine that wouldn't be a prerequisite for the job though, and they likely also know that boasting that you do things the old "Twins-Way" probably isn't good resume fodder these days.

I don't think they would have to. However throwing in a lesser prospect or eating some of Dozier's $12 million isn't a deal breaker for me if the Twins are getting back an elite prospect(s). -

Who was a 36-year-old rental making the same amount Dozier is now. Dozier should command far more. -

Established pitchers tend to be pretty close to free agency, I don't know that guys nearing the end of their contracts are a good fit for a rebuilding team. At least not good in terms of being a centerpiece of a deal for a prime trade chip. -

It's not like the Twins have one of those now who would be kicked to the curb though. Maybe Kepler will hit lefties; he hasn't yet. Also perhaps I missed the premise, but I thought it was under the hypothetical that Kepler ended up playing 1B, so it's not like the team would be losing him. If Palka is the back up plan, again only for the hypothetical, a bargain free agent shouldn't stand in the way. Bellinger does interest me and I like Kepler in the OF for what it's worth. -

There's also a glut on RF in the free agent market of all levels of skill. If a team was free agent shopping this year (not that the Twins are) corner bats are where the bargains are going to be. With that said, if there is interest in Eddie Rosario and there's someone out there the front office likes, there's room for movement there too. -

Yeah he has power, his K rate dropped from 27% in A ball to 20% in AA while his BB rate increased from 9% to 12%. This guy is is starting to look really good. -

I'd have to disagree, Ryan seemed to be a bit of a fence straddler to me. I don't think he ever embraced the "All" part of all or nothing. He never made the big move to go for "All" likely because he was fearful that if it didn't work out he would have "Nothing" which is what his half-measures got him anyway. I'd welcome a new approach even if it doesn't work out, and if it doesn't, try something different the next time. -

And even if they would buy it, there's none to buy. And it might not just be a fluke this year, it's just as likely a trend that nearly all teams are willing and are able to meet the demands of their best pitchers enabling the club to retain them into their early 30's. It's trade or bust this year and could be for the foreseeable future as well. -
Article: Dozier Trade Talk Heating Up?
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'd like the Twins to get some pitching back for Dozier, but power hitting 1B prospects just seem to be a dying breed. That's not to say there aren't power hitting 1B in the league, it just seems that most of them didn't come up as 1B, they used to play something else. If Bellinger ends up being the target, I really hope Falvey already has multi-year game plans written in pencil for Sano, Vargas, Park, Kepler and Mauer. Bellinger is really appealing though, he sure looks a lot like Anthony Rizzo. Also a thought, if the Dodgers have to cut payroll what would people think about throwing in Santiago and taking back Scott Kazmir? He's got a couple of ugly years left on his contract but it's not like the Twins are going to be hurting for payroll flexibility in the next couple years. Taking on his contract might really sweeten the offer from the Dodgers if they truly have their backs against the wall in terms of debt.
