Article: Winter Meetings Are Over. Now What?
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If the hold up is truly due to the Twins wanting another useful MLB-ready piece like Brock Stewart but the Dodgers are unwilling to do so, I wonder if a guy like Pedro Baez would be a compromise. He's a BP guy for sure, but looks pretty legit and might even be the Twins closer from the get go. Or maybe the Dodgers already think Baez is more valuable than a guy like Stewart anyway and he's also a deal breaker. -
So San Diego not only traded for Diaz, the first pick but for Luis Torrens the 2nd pick; they also personally had the 3rd pick. All of these guys were in A ball or rookie leagues last years, I am extremely curious about their end-game. Surely they can't carry all three, they didn't figure out a genius loophole in the process did they?

I agree, I'm getting that feeling also. On the other hand I was thinking the White Sox must have thought the same which is why they chose the Red Sox deal and here they are going right back to the Nationals and getting him for Eaton, who upon closer inspection does have a really nice contract and record of consistency. Probably a lot better player than most people would give him credit for. Still, I'm really jealous of the White Sox right now.- 163 replies

The White Sox are about to get Lucas Giolito and others for Adam Eaton. I so hate the White Sox. On the bright side, the Sox got Eaton by trading Hector Santiago and a PTBNL. Surely the Twins can trade Santiago and a PTBNL for a similar return.- 163 replies

Yeah, that's just insane. For one thing, they must have stopped watching baseball about the same time they were mathematically eliminated last year, that being the middle of July, because he was awful after that point just as he was at the end of his career in Washington. For another, Colorado should know by now that a hunchback with tuberculosis holding a broom handle can put up an .800 OPS in Coors Field. Why not just pay Brandon Moss a fraction of what you just gave Desmond to do practically the same thing?- 163 replies

Article: Paul Molitor At The Winter Meetings
nicksaviking replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't expect Molitor to talk to Sano in the offseason. I would expect there to be some organizational hierarchy that allows for easy and open communication, but that's not Molitor's job in-season let alone during the off season. I'm guessing it's the assistant to the traveling secretary. -

I don't think Soler has shown more power in the minors but the guy is 6'4" and goes about 225 and has a pretty powerful swing, I think it's all about projection for him, he looks like he might be a power guy. Maybe. I'm also surprised by this. Does Soler have more value than I'm giving him credit for, or does Wade Davis have less for some reason. With how much money and more importantly years Chapman, Jensen and Melancon are going to get/have got, I'd have thought there would have been a feeding frenzy for one year of Davis.- 163 replies

nicksaviking replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
That's a positive take on the situation, hope that's the angle. I'd think a veteran in this year's poor free agent pitching market would wait quite a bit longer before accepting a MiLB deal, though it looks like when he signed with the Pirates it was on Dec 3, 2015 which likely was during the winter meetings and that must have been a MiLB deal considering he only pitched in the minors for them. Or perhaps there is a trade off, he'll never get a firm guarantee that he'll start if he gets a MLB deal but it would probably be all but certain if he took a MiLB deal, and he's not ready to slot himself into the pen for the rest of his (likely short) career.- 163 replies

nicksaviking replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It's not that Solar is a terrible player, it's that he is a poor defender and doesn't have any speed which has been what KC built their offense around. He's a square peg on a team created to accommodate round holes. The defensively flexible Javier Baez would make a lot more sense to me. Maybe now that they are going into rebuild mode they'll try another strategy. Or maybe Dayton Moore kind of lucked his way into the previous winning formula and perhaps isn't a great GM, which is what most people were saying prior to the 2014 season.- 163 replies

Darren Wolfson tweeted (can't post from work) that the Twins are looking at Clayton Richard! Excuse me, that exclamation mark was a typo which occurred trying to clean the vomit off of my keyboard. Maybe they just want him for the pen, but after decades of having issues missing bats it's going to take me a long time to come around on guys like this. I've been conditioned to ruin my keyboard thinking about them. Also, I really hope nobody is fooled by former SD pitchers anymore. I mean the book is out that they nearly all are bad once they leave "America's Finest City".- 163 replies

nicksaviking replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm interested in Pomerantz if his value is based more on his AL numbers with Boston, not his NL numbers in San Diego. Because Boston can't really pretend that the pitcher you saw last year in SD is the guy you'll be getting, no Padre pitcher has put up the same numbers after they leave that team. Not one of any significance anyway.- 120 replies

I don't know if it has happened yet or if a player and his agent will ever come to this conclusion, but if a guy is going to accept a 1-year reclamation deal but he wants a shot at a WS ring, it might be wise to initially sign with a non-contender simply so when July comes around you know that only the real contenders will come asking to trade for you.- 120 replies

I don't want the Twins to lose their 2nd round pick next year mostly due to its value; the Twins should be in the driver's seat at draft time and be able to game the situation due to their draft pool as the Astros have done recently. But I'd guess the idea of signing Bautista would be that you could trade him in July for prospects much better than a 2nd round pick. Problem is he's been hurt a lot lately.- 120 replies

Also if you didn't have a stud reliever, but really any kind of average reliever who amassed a goodish amount of saves via skill, unusual circumstance or sheer dumb luck last year.- 120 replies

Article: Not-So-Premium Velocity
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I was happy the Twins attempted to get some hard throwers, there was a clear change of direction after the Alex Wimmers draft. However getting hard throwers alone clearly wasn't the solution as it did not result in missing more bats at the MLB level. I don't know what the solution was but it's clear that at least one person from each of the other 29 organizations did as no other team struggled with that issue like the Twins. This one singular issue shows why an organization can't remain insular and only try to copy league trends without having outside perspective and insight. I'm glad Falvey and Lavine are here, hopefully they keep adding others with unique visions and theories and fix most of our systemic issues.- 13 replies

I wouldn't think so, but what would the Royals do with Solar, why would they be interested in him at all? He doesn't fit their system in any way. Not that it couldn't be mis-information slipped out there by the Cubs.- 70 replies

I don't believe Dozier makes as much sense for the Yankees as he does for other teams as they need to use their resources to get starting pitching which isn't available the Old Yankee Way this year, that is big bucks thrown at the free agent market. I also don't believe Brian Cashman when he says he never checked in on the situation.- 120 replies

Sounds like Dayton Moore isn't doing a very good job of reading the closer market. I hope he does trade one of the AL's best relievers to the NL for a fourth OF type who is a poor defender with no speed. Did Moore already forget what got his team to the top? I already thought KCs nice little run was ending, but this just makes no sense.- 70 replies

I don't think removing those four and adding Sale makes the Twins a playoff team in 2017. Even if you took Sale off of the White Sox last year, that was still likely a better team than the Twins have now. I'd rather look for an ace when the team is ready to win, assuming they didn't already find one. Chris Sale on a couple of more .500 or worse teams doesn't get me excited. Also, I can't see the White Sox having any interest in taking on Santiago's salary and they'd likely just look to flip Dozier, which in all likelihood would mean a three team trade where the prospects the Twins get for Dozier go to the White Sox.- 70 replies

From La Velle's piece: --But there's no rush here to move Dozier. If the Twins don't like the names they are hearing, they can hold on to Dozier and see who caves at the trade deadline.-- I think La Velle somehow forgot about Dozier's first two regrettable months last year. Dozier's 1st half/2nd half splits tend to be monumental and you never know which end is going to be the hot one. That doesn't make for a risk I'm overly comfortable taking, and I'm generally a risk taker when it comes to stuff like this. Unless the offers are genuinely lopsided against the Twins right now, Brian Dozier is NOT a guy I'm going into the year with assuming I'll be able to trade him for better value in July. Clearly they weren't blown away with offers last July.- 70 replies
