Article: Falvey's First Stand
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree, I don't like calling players junk, even hypothetical ones. Unless a national guy actually used that phrase I think we can probably find a better word to refer to any possible throw-in type players. On the other side of the coin though, are you seriously asking why people are "slamming" you for criticizing the front office when you have no idea who the other players were? Why is anyone criticizing the front office when we don't know what the offer was? Simply because we just wanted this so bad and now we're disappointed? -

Then you need to stop saying it was a 100% certainty that it wasn't a 1:1 swap because we don't know that either. In fact we don't even know if the Twins were asking for De Leon. -

How are those things related? Nobody was offering a #2 starter for Dozier who is their best trade chip and there wasn't one available in free agency. Short of armed kidnapping what were they supposed to do? -
Article: Five Remaining Free Agent Fits
nicksaviking replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I can only assume he said that because he assumed these players had long ago retired. There are no starting pitchers I'm interested in free agency at this point. I'd much rather give the jobs to May/Mejia/Berrios two of whom will already be squeezed out if the Twins give Hughes another shot at the rotation. I would be just fine adding a starting pitcher for the implicit purpose of going to the pen though.- 80 replies

Article: Falvey's First Stand
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Well even if one deal doesn't DIRECTLY lead to another bad deal, I'm happy Falvey didn't make one with his first move and force us to talk about if this is going to be a pattern and/or if other wiser and better GM's are going to smell blood in the water manipulate him going forward. In other words, I'd hate to be next Arizona Diamondbacks. -

So you think Dozier would not have gotten significantly more than Forsythe AND the Dodgers were offering three players, not two? How insignificant would two additional pieces be then? And why would we care to have them? -
Yeah, that should have been the conclusion from the start. If I had dinner with Nick Sabin or Urban Meyer I'd probably leave with my blood in a boil listening to a bunch of self-righteousness and arrogance. HS kids tend to have different taste in everything than the rest of us do, coaches likely are not exempt from that rule.

Article: Jorge Polanco At SS Could Be Disastrous
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Also, while it's pretty outside the box, I wouldn't mind giving Dozier some time at 3B if/when Sano is off/DH-ing/injured/in the dog house. If Dozier can play the position adequately (and maybe he can't) Dozier/Escobar/Polanco left-to-right might be the best defensive alignment currently available on the projected 25-man. Plus, a second position on Dozier's resume wouldn't hurt come the trade deadline. Still, fingers crossed Dozier is traded for a haul prior to opening day. -
Article: Jorge Polanco At SS Could Be Disastrous
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I still hope Dozier is traded, but I'm not going to panic if Polanco has to start at SS. Most people seem OK giving Sano another shot at 3B despite poor results; it seems as though most feel he was put in a terrible spot being moved back there after not playing the position for over a year. Polanco was in the same boat, for some reason Mike Quade wasn't playing him at SS in Rochester. Polanco might not have been Quade's preferred SS but it's beyond inexcusable that the front office didn't dictate that he get reps there. But if Dozier is traded, or Polanco can't play the position, I'm just fine with Escobar getting the job back. Last year was the first in three that he wasn't an offensive asset. I certainly like his chances at a rebound more than any free agent. It looks like Erick Aybar is the best available free agent, and he can't hit. -
Article: The All-Time Worst Twins: Matt Walbeck

****Moderator Note***** The sensitivity of the title aside, we still need to stay on topic. For the time being, please let's just discuss the player. For those that don't like the theme, I understand, but simply refraining from posting and or reading the articles is the best option. Article: Other Offseason Shopping Needs
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yeah, and I'm an advocate for societal change and evolutoin. However for some reason I have the hardest time dealing with change in decorum of language and journalism. I don't like how casual it has become, but if that's how it's going to be from here on out, I guess I'll just have to suck it up and go along with it. -

So the ballots were transparent this year correct? I'm just wondering if the one vote each for Veritek and Wakefield came from the same Boston beat writer or something.- 114 replies

Article: Other Offseason Shopping Needs
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
http://m.startribune.com/twins-manager-molitor-would-like-to-add-another-veteran/410968995/ Per La Velle, Molitor is campaigning for a veteran presence in the clubhouse. La Velle rightfully suggests it likely would have to be an outfielder. He name drops my horse in the race, Ryan Rayburn. But most importantly, and really the only reason I'm posting this is due to this excerpt: --We'll see if Falvine can come up with a player or two for Molitor before camp opens.-- Falvine? As in Falvey and Lavine? Seriously, are we really doing this? In the spots section of a major market newspaper no less. -
Article: Don't Sleep On Phil Hughes
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Who would do such a thing! Let's jump in the time machine and see what everyone was saying about the extension when it occurred: http://twinsdaily.com/topic/16336-article-twins-extend-phil-hughes/page-1?hl= phil hughes Props to being alone on the Island of Skepticism HitInAPinch! John Bonnes was also a bit waffley on the extension. Dang, I was hoping I was going to be on the right side of history on that one, alas I guess I liked the move as well. -
Article: Don't Sleep On Phil Hughes
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I wouldn't expect the young guys to thrive, but I'd like to give them a shot. I don't think there are four of them (Hughes, Berrios, May and Mejia) fighting for three spots, isn't it only two spots? I'd assume Santana, Gibson and Santiago are locks barring injury. Three unexciting vets are more than enough for my tastes if we're rebuilding, four is probably more than I can handle. As far as Duffey not being a starter any longer due to his two pitch mix, I agree, and it's also largely the reason I don't really think Hughes needs another shot at the rotation; he basically just has two different fastballs and a curve, but unlike Duffey, Hughes' curve is really, really bad. And that has nothing to do with TOS, his curve has been a bad pitch his entire career. -
Article: Don't Sleep On Phil Hughes
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Personally I'd like to see him in the pen regardless of where his velocity is at. I think he could be good back there with his limited repertoire and I'd rather give some of the younger guys a shot at the rotation. I'd like to give two of May, Berrios and Mejia a shot at the very least. I don't really like having 4 vets in the rotation for a rebuilding club. -
Article: Don't Sleep On Phil Hughes
nicksaviking replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Phil's velocity dip occurred in 2015, not last year so I'm not sure if the surgery is going to improve that, but his off speed pitches haven't been terribly good for awhile now either which typically is a problem for starting pitchers. However as he saw with his former teammate Mariano Rivera, a guy can be OK in the pen with a fastball and a cutter. Maybe he can mix his curve in once in awhile or Allen can work with him and he can try the changeup again. Either way, I like him in the pen assuming the move helps increase his velocity as it often, but not always, does. The Twins don't have a closer now anyway, if he's healthy that should be an attainable goal for him. Also, with the sudden frenzy on relief arms, his salary would barely look out of place if he did a decent job back there. -
I hated the Ramos/Capps trade and I do love getting new prospects. However Capps had a track record of being a pretty solid pitcher previous to the Twins getting him. The chances of him paying off were/are much higher than De Leon alone, who has done nothing but get torched at the MLB level and at least in my opinion has questionable velocity, repertoire and durability.

Sherlock last night certainly seemed like a finale. If so, it was OK as far as finales go but that's not saying much since most are a let down. This one seemed less like a Sherlock episode and more like a Saw movie. It was OK I guess but not great and I'd bet if I re-watched it much more closely there would be a ton of plot holes and continuity issues which you don't want to see in a show like Sherlock. It was a good run, I think the show can end now. I'm guessing the leads are much too busy to even think about doing another series at this point anyway.

Article: Early 2017 Draft Prospects
nicksaviking replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
BA had an interview with Hunter Greene. It's too early, but I suppose he's the horse I'm backing presently. http://www.baseballamerica.com/area-code-baseball/area-code-conversation-hunter-greene/#HmDgqo4cxW2JrPPS.97 In his off time he likes to fish, so sounds like a really solid fit for Minnesota.- 69 replies

Moderator Note: Keep the discussion away from personal attacks and dismissive insults. I have edited a couple of posts as opposed to hiding them entirely as most of the content is acceptable. However let's not make this debate combative; nearly everyone is on the same side in that most think Dozier should be traded, the disagreement is only on what is an acceptable return. This shouldn't be contentious.
-
That was my belief heading into this offseason and I said as much multiple times. However I don't think that's anywhere close to a stone cold certainty anymore, not because Dozier is going to improve his stature, but because there is no demand now. His value is going to increase or decrease mostly due to demand, not performance. Also, we have so many people saying we have to jump on this offer of De Leon plus nothing/minimal pieces. Why don't we just slow down and wait until March? If Dozier is the Dodgers preferred target, they'll come calling back to the Twins before they do anything else at 2B.
-
No, that is an assumption. De Leon isn't some magic pill, he still has a high probability of busting. That's why the Twins would be doing themselves a disservice by not hedging their bets with additional pieces with a reasonable chance of being useful players.
-
I'm not assuming anything, including what the market will do. I just know the market never stays the same. No one's ignoring risk; those willing to walk away are accepting it, I won't speak for others, but this doesn't appear to be a big risk as the reward isn't very big. If this is the peak, then it's not much different than the valley, I don't see any championships from up here with this return.
-
I wouldn't be happy if they never trade him. However there are plenty more opportunities to do so and I'm OK waiting for the next opportunity if this is the best offer they have now. And I won't be resentful if the Twins never get a better offer for Dozier; the risk of losing this bird-in-the-hand doesn't look all that terrible to me. Even if ensuing offers are less, I'm not inclined to think they'll be significantly less though I'm more than willing to chance that they are.
